Chapter 14 - Marco’s Second File

Dante wanted to leave immediately.
Miriam stopped him.
“Marco expects that.”
“He has information about Adrian.”
“He may have Adrian.”
Sophia looked between them.
“Then we have to go.”
Elena shook her head.
“You are staying here.”
“No.”
“Sophia.”
“If Dad is alive, I’m not sitting in this house while everyone keeps secrets again.”
Dante sat across from her.
“No one is keeping this from you.”
“You were going to leave without me.”
“I was going to make sure the address was safe.”
“And then tell me?”
“Yes.”
Sophia looked at Elena.
“Would he?”
Elena answered honestly.
“I don’t know.”
Dante accepted the judgment.
“That is fair.”
They agreed Sophia would remain with Miriam while Dante and Elena visited the address with investigators.
The location led to a storage facility beside an abandoned rail line.
The unit had been rented under a company connected to Marco’s sister.
Inside were twenty identical black boxes.
Most were empty.
One contained passports bearing different names but the same photograph of Marco.
Another contained surveillance images of Bianca, Halden, Charles Rook, Dante, and Adrian.
Elena found a folder marked CAMILA.
Inside were photographs of her sister taken during the months before the crash.
Camila leaving Miriam’s office.
Camila visiting the lake house.
Camila meeting an unknown man in a parking garage.
The final photograph showed her handing him the blue envelope.
“That cannot be right,” Elena said. “Sophia had the envelope.”
Dante examined the photograph.
“Maybe there were two.”
The unknown man’s face was hidden beneath a cap.
His hand was visible.
He wore the Vale crest ring.
Dante removed his own ring from his pocket.
The design matched.
Only direct descendants received the ring.
Adrian had one.
Dante had one.
Their father had worn one until his death.
No one else should have possessed it.
An investigator called from the rear of the storage unit.
“There’s a locked cabinet.”
They opened it using a key found among Marco’s passports.
Inside were audio tapes, financial records, and a laptop.
The laptop required a password.
Elena looked at the wallpaper image on the screen.
It showed the lake where Dante had rescued Adrian years earlier.
“Try the accident date,” she said.
Dante entered it.
Access denied.
“The date our family truly began opened Adrian’s room,” Elena said. “Marco may have chosen something different.”
Dante studied the photograph.
“Marco used to say the Vale family began the day my father hired him.”
“When was that?”
Dante entered the date.
The laptop unlocked.
Folders filled the screen.
PHASE ONE.
TRUST TRANSFER.
DANTE INCAPACITY.
ADRIAN LOCATION.
Dante clicked the final folder.
It contained no address.
Only a series of medical payments, food deliveries, and security invoices tied to a private clinic.
The clinic’s location changed every six months.
The most recent payments went to a facility called Grayhaven Recovery Center.
Miriam searched the name remotely.
“No public records,” she said through the phone. “The company exists only on paper.”
An investigator found a shipping address.
It belonged to a marina on the northern side of the lake.
Dante opened another file.
A video began.
Marco sat in front of the camera.
The date showed that it had been recorded the day after the canceled wedding.
“Dante,” he said, “you are probably searching for your brother.”
Dante leaned closer.
Marco continued.
“You want to believe Adrian survived because hope is easier than guilt. But survival is not the same as freedom.”
Elena felt the room grow colder.
“Halden ordered the transfer of company funds. Bianca agreed to the marriage plan. Rook built the legal structure. None of them understood the full purpose.”
Marco looked directly into the lens.
“The trust was never the prize.”
Dante paused the video.
“What else is there?”
The investigator pointed toward the folder list.
One file was labeled PROJECT HEIR.
Dante opened it.
The file contained Sophia’s school reports, medical history, photographs, and copies of every guardian evaluation.
At the bottom was a document requesting approval to declare Sophia the sole controlling heir of Vale Holdings.
Elena read the conditions.
The request could only proceed if Dante and Adrian were both declared legally incapable or dead.
“They needed control through Sophia,” she said.
Dante shook his head.
“Bianca planned to control her trust.”
“She thought the money was the goal,” Elena replied. “Marco needed someone legally positioned around Sophia.”
The video resumed.
Marco said, “Adrian discovered the real structure too late. He believed he could expose it through the board. I gave him another option.”
Dante’s hands tightened.
“What option?”
Marco answered from the recording.
“Disappear.”
Elena stared at the screen.
Marco continued.
“Your brother accepted because he believed it would protect Sophia and Camila. He did not know the plane would still leave with Camila aboard.”
Sophia’s mother had died while Adrian escaped.
Whether he had chosen that outcome remained unclear.
Dante stepped away from the laptop.
“He left her.”
“We don’t know that,” Elena said.
“He disappeared and let us bury someone else under his name.”
“Marco may be lying.”
“Then why create this file?”
“To make you angry before you reach Adrian.”
The video ended with a map of the lake.
A red mark appeared near the northern marina.
Beneath it were three words.
COME WITHOUT POLICE.
Dante looked at the investigators.
“We are not following that instruction.”
Elena agreed.
They prepared a controlled approach to the marina.
Before they could leave, Miriam called again.
Her voice was strained.
“Sophia is gone.”
Elena stopped breathing.
“What happened?”
“She received a message from your number.”
Elena checked her phone.
It had remained in her pocket.
“What did the message say?”
“It said you found Adrian and needed her at the lake house.”
Dante grabbed the laptop.
On the screen, a new video file appeared by itself.
LIVE FEED.
He opened it.
Sophia sat inside a moving vehicle.
She was not restrained, but fear showed in her face.
A man drove beside her.
Only his hands were visible on the steering wheel.
On one hand was the Vale crest ring.
Sophia looked toward the hidden camera.

Then she spoke carefully.
“Uncle Dante, he says he’s taking me to my father.”
