Chapter 13 - A Guardian Named Elena

The weeks after the canceled wedding changed every part of the Vale family.

Bianca was charged with conspiracy, fraud, attempted trust manipulation, evidence tampering, and participation in the forged guardianship order.

Charles Rook entered an agreement with investigators.

He admitted preparing false documents and destroying records at the lake house.

In return, he provided access to hidden accounts connected to Northstar Meridian.

Victor Halden resigned from the board before Vale Holdings could remove him.

He denied ordering the plane crash and claimed Bianca had invented the accusation to reduce her own responsibility.

He was not released.

The financial evidence connected him to the stolen company funds, even if the evidence concerning the crash remained incomplete.

Marco Bell continued to disappear.

Every property linked to him was empty.

Every bank account had been closed months earlier.

Every phone number led to an abandoned device.

It was as though Marco had spent years preparing for the exact day Dante stopped trusting him.

In family court, Miriam presented Adrian’s original sealed clause.

The judge recognized Elena as Sophia’s emergency guardian.

Dante did not challenge the ruling.

When the judge asked whether he wished to make a statement, Dante rose.

“My brother created the clause because he understood something I did not,” he said. “Authority is not the same as protection.”

He looked toward Elena.

“I allowed other people to control the information reaching me. Sophia paid the price for that failure.”

Sophia watched from beside Miriam.

Dante continued.

“Elena Marlowe should remain her guardian for as long as Sophia chooses.”

The judge approved the arrangement.

Dante retained his role as financial trustee under independent supervision, but all decisions affecting Sophia’s education, residence, and personal welfare belonged to Elena.

After court, reporters gathered outside.

Dante instructed his new security team to keep their distance.

Sophia held Elena’s hand while cameras flashed beyond the steps.

“Do I have to live at the apartment forever?” Sophia asked.

Elena smiled.

“No.”

“Can we live somewhere with a yard?”

“Yes.”

“Can Uncle Dante visit?”

Elena looked at him.

“That depends on whether he learns to knock.”

Dante almost smiled.

“I can learn.”

Sophia turned serious.

“And you cannot choose my school without asking.”

“I won’t.”

“And no more security people following me.”

“One person when necessary.”

“Half a person.”

“That may be difficult.”

“One person who stays far away.”

Dante nodded.

“Agreed.”

They moved into a smaller house near Sophia’s school.

It had a yard, a blue front door, and enough space for Elena to create an office.

Dante visited every Sunday.

At first, Sophia spoke to him only during meals.

Then she invited him to watch her piano lessons.

A month later, she allowed him to help build a bookshelf.

The shelf leaned slightly to the left, but no one corrected it.

Dante changed Vale Holdings too.

Every security contract was reviewed.

Every board authorization required independent verification.

A public fund was established to repay money removed through Northstar Meridian.

Bianca’s name disappeared from the company’s official history before it had ever formally entered it.

Yet the question of Adrian remained.

The original crash investigation reported that two passengers and one pilot died.

Camila had been identified through dental records.

The pilot had been identified through personal effects and medical records.

Adrian’s identification had relied on his wedding ring, watch, and documents found near the wreckage.

No DNA comparison had been conducted.

Dante requested the evidence be reopened.

Three weeks later, an investigator arrived at Elena’s house carrying a sealed report.

Dante, Elena, Sophia, and Miriam gathered around the dining table.

The investigator placed the report in front of Dante.

“We tested the remaining biological evidence attributed to Adrian Vale.”

Sophia held Elena’s hand beneath the table.

Dante opened the envelope.

The report contained one clear conclusion.

The remains did not belong to Adrian.

Sophia whispered, “My dad could be alive.”

The investigator did not answer directly.

“We can only confirm that he was not among the identified victims.”

Dante read the report again.

“Why would his belongings be on the plane?”

“Someone wanted investigators to believe he was there.”

Miriam looked at the date.

“This result was completed four days ago.”

“Yes.”

“Why are we only receiving it now?”

The investigator hesitated.

“The first copy disappeared from our system.”

Dante’s expression hardened.

“Who accessed it?”

“We traced the login to a retired investigator.”

“Name?”

The man placed a photograph on the table.

It showed a former federal aviation officer leaving a private building.

Beside him walked Marco Bell.

The photograph had been taken the previous morning.

On the back was an address.

Elena recognized the town.

It was less than twenty miles from the Vale lake house.
