Chapter 1 - Three Days Before the Wedding

Three nights earlier, Elena woke to the sound of someone knocking on her apartment door.

It was not a normal knock.

It came in three quick taps, a pause, then two more.

The pattern had been used by Sophia since she was seven, when she and Elena had invented secret signals during long afternoons at the Vale estate.

Three taps meant, It’s me.

Two taps meant, Please hurry.

Elena crossed the dark living room and checked the small security screen beside the door.

Sophia stood alone in the hallway.

She wore a pale sweater over her pajamas. Her hair was loosely tied, and one of her shoes was missing a lace.

Elena unlocked the door at once.

Sophia rushed inside without speaking.

Elena looked down the empty hallway.

“Who brought you here?”

Sophia shook her head.

“How did you get out of the Vale house?”

“I took the service elevator.”

“That doesn’t explain how you crossed half the city.”

“I called a car from the tablet in the library.”

Elena closed the door and turned the lock.

Sophia stood near the sofa, clutching a small backpack to her chest.

Her breathing was fast, but she was not crying.

Elena knelt in front of her.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Did anyone touch you?”

“No.”

“Did anyone follow you?”

“I don’t think so.”

Elena studied her face.

Sophia had inherited her mother’s large brown eyes and her father’s habit of pressing her lips together whenever she was trying not to show fear.

“What happened?”

Sophia looked toward the closed door.

“Aunt Bianca was in Uncle Dante’s office.”

“Bianca isn’t your aunt yet.”

“She makes everyone call her that.”

Elena sat beside her.

“What was she doing?”

“She was talking to Mr. Bell.”

“Marco?”

Sophia nodded.

“They said I had to be moved before the wedding.”

Elena felt a cold weight settle in her stomach.

“Moved where?”

“I don’t know. Somewhere with gates.”

Sophia opened her backpack and removed the silver recorder.

Elena recognized it immediately.

Camila, Sophia’s mother, had bought it years earlier so Sophia could record piano practice and listen for mistakes.

“I left it on the shelf in Uncle Dante’s office,” Sophia said. “I wanted to record the song I’m playing at the wedding.”

“You recorded their conversation?”

“I pressed the button before they came inside.”

Elena reached for the device, but Sophia pulled it back.

“There are two recordings.”

“What do you mean?”

“The first one is Bianca talking about my trust.”

“And the second?”

Sophia looked down at the recorder.

“I don’t understand the second one.”

Elena lowered her voice.

“Let me hear it.”

Sophia finally placed the device in her hand.

Elena pressed play.

At first, there was only the quiet sound of a clock ticking in Dante’s office.

Then Bianca began speaking.

“Dante signs the documents tomorrow. After the wedding, control transfers automatically.”

Marco answered.

“Only if the guardianship review is completed.”

“It will be. Elena has already been removed.”

“She still has legal standing as Camila’s sister.”

“Not after Dante sees the messages.”

Elena’s hand tightened around the recorder.

“What messages?” she whispered.

Sophia shook her head.

The recording continued.

Marco said, “Sophia must be moved before she speaks to him.”

“Then move her.”

“To St. Margaret’s?”

“Yes. No phone, no visitors, no Elena.”

Sophia leaned against Elena’s shoulder.

Bianca’s voice became quieter.

“Once we control the trust, the Vale board will have no choice. Dante’s voting shares are already vulnerable.”

Marco replied, “You’re forgetting the sealed clause.”

There was a pause.

Then Bianca said, “The sealed clause died with Adrian.”

Elena stopped the recording.

Adrian Vale had been Sophia’s father and Dante’s older brother.

He had died with Camila in a private-plane crash two years earlier.

“What sealed clause?” Elena asked.

Sophia swallowed.

“I don’t know.”

Elena resumed the recording.

There was movement near the microphone. A drawer opened. Papers shifted.

Then a third voice spoke.

A male voice Elena had never heard before.

“The sealed clause did not die with Adrian.”

Bianca’s tone sharpened.

“You said no copies existed.”

“One copy still exists.”

“Where?”

“At the lake house.”

Marco spoke again.

“Move Sophia tonight. Dante must never hear this.”

The recording ended.

For several seconds, neither Elena nor Sophia spoke.

Then the apartment buzzer sounded.

Sophia flinched.

Elena looked toward the security screen.

A black vehicle had stopped outside the building.

Two men stepped onto the sidewalk.

Even from six floors above, Elena recognized the silver insignia on their jackets.

Vale Security.

Her phone rang.

Marco Bell’s name appeared on the screen.

Elena declined the call.

It rang again.

This time, a message appeared.

Open the door. We only want Sophia.

Elena turned off every light in the apartment.

Then she called the only person she believed might understand the words sealed clause.

Miriam Cole, the attorney who had written Camila’s final will.

Miriam answered with a tired voice.

“Elena?”

“I need your help.”

“What happened?”

“Sophia recorded Bianca and Marco discussing her trust.”

There was silence on the line.

Elena continued.

“They mentioned a sealed clause at the lake house.”

Miriam inhaled sharply.

“Elena, listen to me carefully. Do not give that recorder to Dante.”

“Why?”

“Because we don’t know whether he is involved.”

A heavy knock struck the apartment door.

Sophia grabbed Elena’s hand.

Marco’s voice came from the hallway.

“Elena, open the door.”

Miriam spoke quickly.

“Take Sophia somewhere public. Do not use your own car. Do not contact the police until I call you back.”

“Why not?”

“Because the guardianship order may already have been changed.”

Another knock shook the door.

“Elena,” Marco called. “You are interfering with the legal custody of a child.”

Elena looked at Sophia’s frightened face.

May you like

Miriam’s final words came through the phone.

“If Bianca has the documents, Dante may already believe you kidnapped her.”
