Chapter 15 - The Door Beneath the Lake House

The vehicle carrying Sophia disappeared from traffic cameras fourteen miles from the northern marina.
Dante’s investigators searched every road leading toward the lake.
Elena watched the live feed on Marco’s laptop.
The image froze, returned, and froze again.
Sophia sat quietly in the passenger seat.
The driver never showed his face.
“Can she hear us?” Elena asked.
The digital director examined the signal.
“It is one-way.”
Dante looked at the map.
“The vehicle isn’t going to the marina.”
“How do you know?”
“The sunlight is on the wrong side of the car. They’re traveling south.”
“Toward the lake house?”
Dante nodded.
They returned to the Vale property as the sun began to set.
The police searched the main house, the maintenance buildings, and the underground records room.
No one found Sophia.
Elena stood in the kitchen where Camila had recorded her final video.
She replayed the child’s message in her mind.
He says he’s taking me to my father.
Sophia had not said, Marco says.
She had not identified the driver at all.
Elena opened the hidden stairway beneath the fireplace.
Dante followed her down.
The underground room looked exactly as they had left it.
Cabinets stood open.
Adrian’s audio system remained on the desk.
The message light was no longer blinking.
Elena walked toward the rear wall.
“Where does the air come from?”
Dante looked up.
A steady current moved through a narrow vent.
“There must be another entrance.”
They searched the cabinets.
Behind the final row, Dante found a metal lever.
He pulled it.
The entire shelving unit shifted forward, revealing a tunnel.
Fresh tire marks crossed the floor.
The tunnel descended beneath the lake house and continued toward the water.
Dante called the investigators.
No signal reached his phone.
Elena pointed to a cable running along the wall.
“This place is shielded.”
They followed the tunnel.
After several hundred feet, it opened into a hidden underground garage.
The black vehicle from the live feed stood beside a concrete platform.
The passenger door was open.
Sophia’s sweater lay on the seat.
Elena picked it up.
“Sophia!”
Her voice echoed through the chamber.
A light turned on at the far end.
Sophia stood behind a thick glass wall.
She appeared unharmed.
“Elena!”
Elena rushed forward.
A locked door separated them.
Dante entered a code into the panel.
Access denied.
“Who brought you here?” Elena asked through the glass.
Sophia pointed behind her.
“I don’t know.”
“You were in the car with him.”
“He wore a mask.”
“Where did he go?”
Sophia pointed toward a second door.
“He said Dad was behind there.”
Dante tried another code.
Access denied.
Sophia looked frightened.
“He told me to use the ring.”
She held up the Vale crest ring Dante had given her.
A matching symbol was carved into the panel on her side.
“Place it against the symbol,” Dante said.
Sophia pressed the ring into the indentation.
The lock clicked.
The glass door opened.
Elena pulled Sophia into her arms.
Dante searched the room.
On a table lay food, water, clean clothes, and a sealed envelope addressed to Sophia.
“Did anyone hurt you?” Elena asked.
“No.”
“Did the driver speak?”
“Only once.”
“What did he say?”
Sophia looked at Dante.
“He said Uncle Dante would finally understand why Dad couldn’t come home.”
Dante opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
He recognized Adrian’s writing before reading the first word.
Dante,
I know what you believe. I know what Marco told you. Some of it is true.
Dante paused.
Sophia stepped closer.
“What does it say?”
He continued silently.
I agreed to disappear for forty-eight hours. Marco claimed Halden intended to remove me from the company and take Sophia’s trust. Camila was supposed to join me at the lake house after sending the evidence to Miriam.
She never arrived.
By the time I learned the plane had crashed, Marco had already replaced my identity, emptied my accounts, and made the world believe I was dead.
Dante turned the page.
Marco did not save me. He imprisoned me inside a life where every attempt to contact you placed Sophia at risk.
The records you found were designed to lead you here only after Halden and Bianca were exposed.
Do not assume Marco is your only enemy.
The person controlling him has been inside the family longer than either of us has been alive.
At the bottom of the page was a final instruction.
Open the second door with Father’s ring.
Dante looked at the ring in Sophia’s hand.
“That was Adrian’s ring,” Elena said.
“No. Adrian’s ring was found after the crash.”
Sophia held it toward the light.
Inside the band was a tiny engraving.
Not Adrian’s initials.
Not Dante’s.
The initials belonged to their father, Sebastian Vale.
Dante stared at the letters.
“My father was buried with his ring.”
A mechanical sound came from the second door.
The handle began to turn from the other side.
Elena pulled Sophia behind her.
Dante stepped forward.
The door opened several inches.
A man stood in the darkness beyond it.
His face remained hidden, but his voice was unmistakable.
“Dante.”
Dante stopped breathing.
He had heard that voice in old birthday videos, forgotten voicemail messages, and the recording beneath the lake house.
“Adrian?”
The man moved into the light.
Before his face became visible, every alarm in the underground chamber activated.
A red warning flashed above the tunnel entrance.
PERIMETER BREACHED.
Sophia looked toward the security screen.
Six vehicles had entered the lake-house property.
Elena recognized the first driver.
Marco Bell.
But Marco was not leading the convoy.
He was sitting in the passenger seat with his hands raised.
A silver-haired woman drove beside him.
Sophia stared at the screen.
“I know her.”
Elena looked down.
“Who is she?”
Sophia pointed toward the woman approaching the hidden tunnel.
“She came to the house the day before Mom died.”
The man behind the second door stepped back into darkness.
Dante reached for him.
“Adrian, wait.”
The man’s final words came before the door slammed shut.
“That woman did not come for Sophia.”
May you like
The steel locks engaged.
“She came for you.”
