Chapter 11 - Play the Recording

The plan failed before sunrise.
Dante intended to return to the hotel, confront Bianca privately, and force her to contact Marco.
Elena and Sophia were supposed to remain at the lake house under Miriam’s protection.
At 4:18 a.m., the backup generator stopped.
At 4:20, the security director discovered that two vehicles outside had been disabled.
At 4:23, Sophia was gone.
Her bed was empty.
The kitchen door stood open.
On the table lay the silver recorder.
Elena ran outside into the rain.
“Sophia!”
Dante followed her toward the trees.
They found a trail of wet footprints leading to the maintenance shed.
Inside, Sophia stood beside a dusty motorcycle, trying to reach a key hanging from the wall.
Elena stopped in the doorway.
“What are you doing?”
Sophia turned.
“I was going back to the city.”
“Alone?”
“I heard Uncle Dante.”
Dante entered behind Elena.
“What did you hear?”
“You said Bianca needed to think she won.”
“Yes.”
“So you were going to let her wedding happen.”
“No.”
“You were going to stand beside her.”
“Only long enough to expose the people helping her.”
Sophia’s voice shook.
“What if she wins again?”
Dante approached slowly.
“She won because I did not listen to you.”
“You didn’t ask.”
“I know.”
“You believed Marco.”
“I know.”
“You sent Elena away.”
“I know.”
Sophia looked at him for several seconds.
Then she removed something from her pocket.
A second memory card.
“I copied the recorder.”
Dante glanced toward the device on the kitchen table.
“Why?”
“Because Marco took it once.”
Elena knelt beside her.
“You do not have to protect the evidence by yourself.”
Sophia looked down.
“Mom tried to protect everyone.”
“And she should not have had to do that alone either.”
Dante removed the Vale crest ring from his hand.
It had belonged to Adrian before being passed to him after the funeral.
He placed it in Sophia’s palm.
“This belongs to your family,” he said. “Not to me, not to the company, and not to Bianca.”
Sophia closed her fingers around it.
“What happens now?”
Dante looked toward the lake through the open shed door.
“We go home.”
By afternoon, Elena and Sophia were back inside Elena’s apartment.
Dante believed the location would appear predictable enough for Marco to approach.
The police had received copies of the evidence, but Miriam warned that the forged court order suggested at least one compromised official.
Dante limited his security team to two officers personally cleared by the digital director.
He did not know that one of them still reported to Marco.
At 5:42 p.m., the officer unlocked the apartment building’s rear entrance.
At 5:47, Marco arrived.
He expected to find Elena alone.
Instead, Dante entered behind him with the second officer.
Marco’s hand moved toward his radio.
Dante said, “Don’t.”
Marco looked from Dante to Elena.
“Where is Sophia?”
“Safe.”
“You are making a mistake.”
“I made the mistake two years ago.”
Marco remained calm.
“Bianca manipulated the records.”
“Her signature is beside yours.”
“She was necessary.”
“For what?”
“To keep Vale Holdings alive.”
“You stole from it.”
“I moved funds before Adrian destroyed the company.”
“Adrian discovered your theft.”
“Adrian discovered a war.”
Dante stepped closer.
“What war?”
Marco glanced toward the hallway.
The compromised officer pushed open the apartment door.
The wooden frame broke under the force.
Sophia emerged from the bedroom before Elena could stop her.
Dante’s anger vanished beneath fear.
“Sophia, stay back.”
Marco stared at the recorder in her hands.
“Give that to me.”
Elena moved in front of her.
“No.”
Dante turned toward Marco.
“You entered her home, tracked a child, forged court documents, and prepared to remove me from my own company.”
Marco’s voice stayed quiet.
“I protected you.”
“You built an incapacity case.”
“Because you were never supposed to lead Vale Holdings.”
Dante absorbed the statement.
“Who was?”
Marco said nothing.
Sophia stepped halfway from behind Elena.
“Bianca said she’d send me away, then take everything in my trust.”
Dante looked at her.
Elena raised the recorder.
“Your fiancée planned it inside your own house. Play this before you blame us.”
Dante accepted the device.
Marco warned him it could have been edited.
Elena asked how he knew what was on it.
Then Dante pressed play.
Bianca’s voice filled the damaged apartment hallway.
Once Dante signs the amended trust papers, Sophia will be placed at St. Margaret’s Academy.
The recording exposed the trust transfer, the isolation plan, and Elena’s removal.
Dante called Bianca.
She answered confidently.
“The wedding is canceled,” he said.
Her confidence broke.
Dante ended the call.
Then Marco’s recorded voice began.
Move Sophia tonight. Dante must never hear this.
Dante slowly turned.
“Marco?”
The two officers behind him went still.
Sophia whispered, “There’s more.”
Dante resumed the recording.
The unknown man spoke again.
“Once the girl is moved, proceed with the wedding. Bianca receives the trust authority. Dante receives ninety days.”
Marco looked toward the compromised officer.
The officer stepped backward and blocked the hall.
Dante’s second officer reached for his radio.
Marco said, “No one needs to make this worse.”
Dante stared at him.
“What happens after ninety days?”
Marco did not answer.
Sophia pressed a button on the recorder.
Camila’s hidden file began to play.
Marco Bell has been moving money through Vale security contracts.
Marco’s face changed.
He stepped toward Sophia.
Elena immediately shielded her.
Dante moved between them.
“Take another step and this ends differently.”
Marco stopped.
The recording continued.
Camila described the copied signatures and the board account.
Then her final warning played.
Dante must not be told until the evidence is secured. Marco controls his communications, his vehicles, and most of the estate’s security.
The uncompromised officer used his radio.
“Police are entering the building.”
Marco looked toward the stairs.
The compromised officer abandoned the doorway and ran.
Dante did not follow him.
He kept his eyes on Marco.
“Who is above Bianca?”
Marco smiled faintly.
“You still believe this is about your bride.”
“Give me a name.”
“You have known him your entire life.”
Sirens approached outside.
Marco removed a small phone from his pocket.
Before anyone could stop him, he pressed one button.
Every light in the building went out.
May you like
In the darkness, Sophia’s recorder played the final seconds of Camila’s message.
If Marco is exposed, he will lead you to the man who ordered the crash.
