Chapter 7 - The Blue Envelope

At the motel, Elena pushed Sophia into the bathroom and locked the inner door.

The person outside tried the handle again.

“Room service.”

Elena picked up the heavy lamp from the bedside table.

“We didn’t order anything.”

The hallway fell silent.

Then a woman’s voice answered.

“Elena, it’s Miriam.”

Elena kept the lamp raised.

“What did Camila write on the note?”

There was a pause.

“Do not trust Dante.”

Elena opened the door.

Miriam entered quickly and locked it behind her.

“You could have called.”

“My phone may be monitored.”

“You nearly frightened Sophia half to death.”

“I’m sorry.”

Sophia emerged from the bathroom holding the blue envelope.

Miriam froze when she saw it.

“Where did you find that?”

“Behind my photograph,” Sophia said.

Miriam moved closer but did not touch it.

“Camila gave me instructions concerning a blue envelope. She never told me where it was.”

Elena placed it on the table.

“Can we open it?”

“It belongs to Sophia.”

They both looked at the child.

Sophia carefully lifted the seal.

Inside were four items.

A handwritten letter.

A small memory card.

A bank receipt.

And a photograph of Marco standing beside Adrian near the Vale family plane.

Sophia unfolded the letter.

The first line read:

My dearest Sophia, if you are reading this, then someone has tried to separate you from the people who love you.

Elena sat beside her.

Sophia continued reading aloud.

Your father discovered that money had been removed from a company account connected to your future trust. He believed someone inside Vale Holdings was preparing to gain control after his death.

Sophia stopped.

“Dad knew he was going to die?”

“No,” Elena said quickly. “He was preparing in case something happened.”

The next paragraph was addressed to Elena.

Camila wrote that the trust contained a sealed guardianship clause naming Elena as Sophia’s emergency guardian if Dante, his spouse, or anyone working under his authority attempted to isolate Sophia.

Miriam closed her eyes.

“That’s the missing attachment.”

Elena kept reading.

Dante is not part of the theft, but he is loyal to the wrong people. He trusts Marco because Marco once saved his life. Until Dante sees the evidence, do not trust his judgment.

Elena looked at the warning Miriam had given her.

The four words had not meant Dante was corrupt.

They meant he could be manipulated.

Sophia pointed at the final paragraph.

The original clause is stored at the lake house. The access code is the date our family truly began.

“What date is that?” Miriam asked.

Sophia thought for a moment.

“My birthday?”

Elena shook her head.

“Camila would have said your birthday.”

“The day she married Dad?”

“Maybe.”

Sophia turned over the bank receipt.

It showed a transfer of $7.8 million from a Vale development account into a holding company named Northstar Meridian.

Miriam read the company name twice.

“I’ve seen this before.”

“Where?” Elena asked.

“In a closed investigation involving Vale Holdings.”

“Who owned it?”

“The ownership records were sealed.”

Sophia held up the memory card.

“We need a computer.”

Miriam removed a laptop from her bag.

The memory card contained one video.

Camila appeared on the screen inside the lake house kitchen.

She looked tired but composed.

The timestamp showed that the video had been recorded twelve hours before the plane crash.

“If this file has been opened,” Camila said, “then Adrian and I were unable to finish what we started.”

Sophia reached for Elena’s hand.

Camila continued.

“Marco Bell has been moving money through Vale security contracts. Adrian confronted him. Marco claimed he was acting under instructions from someone on the board.”

Miriam leaned closer to the screen.

Camila placed a folder on the kitchen table.

“We do not know which director is involved. We only know the final transfer requires Dante’s authorization.”

Elena whispered, “Dante never authorized it.”

On the video, Camila looked directly at the camera.

“Dante must not be told until the original records are secured. Marco controls his communications, his vehicles, and most of the estate’s security.”

The video flickered.

Camila’s next words were distorted.

“We are going to the lake house tonight. Adrian believes the board member will meet us there.”

Sophia watched without blinking.

“The plane crash happened the next morning,” she said.

Miriam nodded.

The final seconds of the video showed Camila glancing toward someone outside the camera frame.

A man spoke from the kitchen doorway.

“Camila, we need to leave.”

Sophia sat forward.

“That isn’t Dad.”

Elena replayed the section.

The man’s face never appeared.

Only his shadow stretched across the floor.

He wore a ring bearing the Vale family crest.

Dante had one.

Adrian had one.

No one else was supposed to.

The video ended.

Miriam removed the memory card.

“The lake house is no longer optional.”

Elena looked at Sophia.

“We cannot take her there.”

“You cannot leave her anywhere Marco might reach.”

A phone rang.

It did not belong to Elena, Miriam, or Sophia.

The sound came from inside Miriam’s bag.

She slowly opened it.

A small black phone lay beneath her files.

None of them had seen it before.

The screen displayed an incoming call.

Marco Bell.

Miriam stared at the device.

“He put a tracker in my bag.”

Elena took the phone and answered without speaking.

Marco’s voice came through the speaker.

“You should not open things that were meant to stay buried.”

Elena walked to the window and pulled the curtain aside.

Three black vehicles entered the motel parking lot.

Marco continued.

“You have five minutes to give me the blue envelope.”

“And if I don’t?”

“Dante will arrive before the police do.”

“Good.”

“You still think he will believe you?”

Elena looked at Sophia.

“No,” she said. “But I think he’s finally starting to doubt you.”

Marco ended the call.

Miriam checked the parking lot.

“We cannot reach the car.”

Elena looked at the emergency map on the motel door.

Behind the building was a service road leading toward an abandoned shopping center.

“We go through the laundry room.”

Sophia placed the memory card and letter back inside the blue envelope.

As they reached the rear stairwell, the fire alarm began to ring.

Guests opened their doors.

People filled the hallway.

Miriam smiled faintly.

“Did you activate that?”

Elena shook her head.

Sophia raised the silver recorder.

“I pressed the emergency button.”

Elena stared at her.

“I didn’t know it had one.”

May you like

“Neither did I.”

They disappeared into the crowd seconds before Marco entered the motel lobby.
