Chapter 12 - The Bride Without a Wedding

The lights returned twelve seconds later.

Marco was gone.

The apartment’s rear window stood open above the fire escape.

The police searched the building, the surrounding streets, and every vehicle connected to Vale Security.

They found the compromised officer two blocks away.

They did not find Marco.

Dante remained in the apartment until Sophia’s statement was complete.

He sat across from her at the small dining table while an investigator asked careful questions.

Elena stayed beside Sophia.

Dante did not interrupt, correct, or defend himself.

For the first time, he listened to the entire story.

Sophia described Bianca entering her room without knocking.

She described Marco removing her tablet and telling her Elena no longer wanted contact.

She described the school brochures hidden in Bianca’s desk.

She described hearing Bianca say the trust would “belong to the marriage” after the ceremony.

When the investigator left, Dante looked at Sophia.

“I should have seen it.”

“You were busy,” she said.

“That is not an excuse.”

“You were sad.”

“That isn’t one either.”

Sophia studied him.

“Are you angry at me?”

“No.”

“Even though I ran away?”

“I’m angry that you believed running was the only way to be heard.”

Elena looked toward the broken doorway.

“Bianca is still at the hotel.”

Dante stood.

“Not for long.”

The ballroom was filled when Dante arrived.

Bianca had changed into her wedding gown.

She stood beneath an arch of white roses, speaking quietly with Victor Halden and three members of the board.

Guests turned as Dante entered through the main doors.

He wore the same black suit from Elena’s apartment.

Rain marked the shoulders.

Bianca walked toward him.

Her expression carried relief carefully designed for the room.

“Dante, thank God. Where is Sophia?”

“Safe.”

“Did Elena release her?”

Dante stopped several feet away.

“No one was holding Sophia.”

Bianca lowered her voice.

“Not here.”

“This is exactly where you wanted everything to happen.”

Reporters near the rear of the ballroom lifted their phones.

Victor Halden stepped forward.

“Dante, perhaps we should discuss this privately.”

Dante looked at him.

“Did you authorize Northstar Meridian?”

Halden’s face remained composed.

“I do not know what you mean.”

“Good. Then you won’t object to a forensic review.”

Bianca reached for Dante’s arm.

He stepped away.

“Don’t do this,” she whispered.

“You planned to have me declared incapacitated.”

“That file was Marco’s.”

“Your signature was on it.”

“He forced me.”

“You used the same excuse for every decision.”

Bianca’s mother stood near the front row, pale and silent.

Dante turned toward the guests.

“There will be no wedding.”

A wave of whispers moved through the room.

Bianca’s voice broke.

“You cannot humiliate me like this.”

“You prepared to remove a child from her home and take control of her inheritance.”

“That is a lie.”

The ballroom screens activated.

Miriam stood near the control booth with the digital security director.

The first document appeared.

Bianca’s signed authorization for St. Margaret’s Academy.

The second showed the trust amendment.

The third displayed the incapacity plan.

Then the recording began.

Bianca’s own voice filled the ballroom.

By the time he realizes the trust transferred control to his spouse, we’ll already have access to everything.

Guests moved away from her.

Halden turned toward a side exit.

Two investigators entered and stopped him.

Bianca looked around the room.

Her carefully built world disappeared one expression at a time.

Dante faced her.

“Where is Marco?”

“I don’t know.”

“He contacted you.”

“He contacted everyone.”

“Who ordered the plane crash?”

Bianca stared at him.

“I never knew about a crash.”

“Camila did.”

At the mention of Camila, Bianca’s face changed.

Dante noticed.

“You knew she left evidence.”

Bianca’s eyes filled with tears.

“I knew there was a file.”

“Who told you?”

She looked toward Victor Halden.

The investigators were placing him under formal questioning.

“He did,” Bianca whispered.

Halden turned.

“Do not say another word.”

Bianca laughed bitterly.

“You promised Marco would handle Dante.”

The ballroom fell silent.

Halden’s face hardened.

“I promised nothing.”

“You said the wedding would protect me.”

“You signed your own documents.”

“You built the entire plan.”

Halden looked toward the reporters.

“This woman is distraught.”

Bianca stepped toward him.

“You told Marco to change the passenger list.”

Dante froze.

Halden’s attorneys began speaking at once.

Investigators separated Bianca from him.

Dante moved closer.

“What passenger list?”

Bianca looked at Dante.

“I didn’t know until last night.”

“Know what?”

“That Marco was supposed to be on the plane.”

Dante’s voice dropped.

“Why wasn’t he?”

“Because Halden called him back.”

Victor Halden shouted from across the room.

“She is lying.”

Bianca ignored him.

“Marco removed his own name, but he was not the only passenger removed.”

Dante stared at her.

“Who else?”

Bianca looked toward the ballroom entrance.

Elena and Sophia had arrived with Miriam.

Bianca’s eyes settled on Sophia.

“Your father.”

Sophia went still.

Dante stepped forward.

“Adrian died on that plane.”

Bianca shook her head.

“Marco told me the body identified as Adrian was never confirmed by DNA.”

The ballroom seemed to tilt around Dante.

“You’re lying.”

“Ask Halden.”

Every camera turned toward the board director.

Halden said nothing.

May you like

Bianca smiled through her tears.

“That silence is your answer.”
