Chapter 15 - The Heartbeat From Room Zero

Three weeks later, the main network was gone, the courthouse laboratory was exposed, and eleven children had been found alive. Three remained missing. S-1, Evelyn, and Helena were still unaccounted for.
Daniel accepted a plea agreement and agreed to testify against the program and himself. Emma visited him once before his transfer. He apologized without excuses and signed away any automatic parental claim. Emma told him she had loved the person he constructed for her, but grief did not create a future together.
Margaret transferred the Reed companies into a victim-compensation trust and remained under guard. Adrian chose an ordinary life with Dr. Morgan. Julia and Lily began helping the recovered families.
Emma spoke publicly outside the courthouse. She declared that no motive - control, revenge, research, protection, or national security - gave anyone ownership over another person's body or child.
At thirty-one weeks, Emma went into labor. She made every decision herself. At 4:17 in the morning, she gave birth to a healthy boy and named him Oliver Vale, a name belonging to no project.
For two days, the hospital found no implant and no abnormal transmission. Emma began to believe the cycle had ended.
Then Margaret called from medical prison and mentioned another archive: Room Zero. Before she could identify the original maternal line, the prison suffered a security breach and Margaret vanished.
Every monitor in the maternity ward turned on. A new four-beat rhythm appeared.
A live feed showed Margaret inside a concrete room. Evelyn stood behind her. Helena stood beside a glass cradle containing another newborn. The cradle was marked ROOM ZERO - MATERNAL SUBJECT: EMMA VALE.
A woman stepped in front of the camera.
She had Emma's face, Emma's eyes, and the same scar beneath her ribs, but she was older.
"Hello, Emma," she said, lifting a silver cup. "You were never Candidate Twelve. You were the replacement."
Oliver opened his eyes as the four-beat pattern sounded again.
Adrian stared at the monitor and whispered that Oliver was not the first child born from Evelyn's embryo.
The woman smiled.
"My name is Emma Vale, and I have been waiting thirty-two years for you to give me back my son."

The hospital doors locked.
