Chapter 3 - The Mother Who Had Been Dead for Twenty Years

Evelyn spoke through the failing monitor and proved her identity with memories no stranger could know: the fish-shaped star on Emma's childhood ceiling, the one-eared rabbit named Clover, and the promise she had made before disappearing.

She explained that Samuel's original implant was designed to protect high-risk pregnancies. Margaret's investors transformed it into a system that could monitor movement, deliver sedatives, alter memory, and control behavior. The silver cup sent commands; the implant delivered the drugs.

Margaret admitted there had been twelve female candidates. Seven were confirmed dead, three were missing, and two had survived. Emma had been watched long before Daniel arranged their first meeting.

Evelyn revealed she had been moved between secret facilities for nineteen years because she knew how to unlock the research. Before she could identify the second survivor, gunfire tore through the basement. A masked attacker shot Daniel's hand and damaged Samuel's chamber.

Emma used her implant to unlock the glass enclosure. Samuel woke long enough to warn that the child must never be scanned, then whispered an address: Fourteen Harbor Road, lighthouse access, Room Seventeen.

Margaret opened an escape tunnel she had always claimed was sealed. Ortiz led the group through it while Daniel remained behind. Emma could not tell whether he had sacrificed himself or chosen the side that was coming through the darkness.
