Chapter 5 - The Man Wearing Samuel's Face
Margaret explained that Samuel's neurological research had been expanded into experiments that grew compatible human tissue and copied biological systems. Most attempts failed. One copy, designated S-2, survived and was given Samuel's memories.
Dr. Morgan called over a broken radio from the ambulance. The driver had changed course, and the supposed Samuel had awakened. Soon the ambulance was found abandoned, with blood on the floor and a video showing the man admitting that Samuel's memories had been placed inside him.
The group followed a hidden map to a mountain safehouse built by Evelyn and Samuel. Inside, a child waited with Emma's one-eared rabbit and introduced herself as Emma. Her real name was Lily, the daughter of Julia Mercer, the other known survivor.
A concealed passage opened in the house. Evelyn stepped out alive. Before mother and daughter could reconcile, armed attackers breached the property. Evelyn took them through underground tunnels to where Dr. Morgan and S-2 were hiding.
The implant inside Emma began separating into moving segments that traveled toward her uterus. Evelyn said an old operating room beneath the lake might allow removal.

As they reached it, Margaret confessed the paternal donor had been Samuel Morgan. The child Emma carried was biologically created from Evelyn's preserved egg and Samuel's cells. S-2 was not the father, but his body shared the pattern the fetus could recognize.
Daniel appeared among the attackers and shouted that the implant was the only thing stopping Evelyn from taking the child.
