Chapter 8 - Mariner House)

Marcus intended to go alone.

Elena knew before he said it.

"No."

"Elena"

"No."

"You're thirty-three weeks pregnant and almost went into labor."

"And she's my mother."

"If she's really Camille."

Elena stared.

Marcus hated himself for saying it.

But he was right.

Everything could be manipulation.

The photograph.

The call.

The voice.

Deepfake technology existed.

So did actors.

So did desperation.

Still, Marcus was going.

Daniel prepared a team.

The message specifically warned against police.

Marcus ignored that condition.

Canadian authorities were quietly contacted.

So was a private security team already operating in Halifax.

Mariner House had supposedly closed years ago, but satellite imagery showed recent electrical activity.

At 8:40 p.m., Marcus boarded a private aircraft.

Elena remained at St. Catherine.

Or at least everyone believed she did.

At 9:15, Elena changed into loose clothes beneath a coat.

Priya stared at her.

"This is a terrible idea."

"I know."

"You could go into labor."

"I know."

"Your father will fire me."

"I technically own part of the hospital now."

Priya stared.

"That is not comforting."

Elena smiled for the first time in days.

Then she did something Marcus should have anticipated.

She called Daniel.

He listened to her entire plan.

Then said, "Absolutely not."

"You're supposed to protect me."

"Correct."

"From threats."

"Correct."

"You can't protect me if Marcus walks into an ambush alone and disappears."

Daniel was silent.

Elena pressed harder.

"You know he'll shut you out to protect me."

Still silence.

"Daniel."

"I hate that you're right."

The solution was not for Elena to fly to Canada.

Instead, they brought Canada to her.

Osei Meridian possessed a secure satellite operations room beneath St. Catherine used for disaster response and remote hospital management.

Elena could watch the operation live.

More importantly, she could communicate directly with Marcus without Cassian knowing.

At 11:53 p.m., Marcus arrived near Mariner House.

Snow drifted across the abandoned coastal property.

The building stood above black water.

Marcus wore a small audio receiver hidden inside his collar.

Elena spoke softly from Baltimore.

"Can you hear me?"

"Yes."

"Don't do anything stupid."

"I'm your father."

"Exactly."

Marcus entered.

The lobby was lit.

No Odalys.

No Cassian.

Only Aaron Pike.

Tied to a chair.

Alive.

Marcus moved toward him.

Aaron shook his head violently.

"Don't."

A speaker activated.

Cassian's voice filled the room.

"Uncle Marcus."

Marcus stopped.

Elena felt the words like a physical blow.

Uncle.

Cassian continued.

"I've waited a very long time to say that."

"Show yourself."

"Eventually."

"Where's Camille?"

"Your wife is safe."

"If you touched her"

"You always believed violence made you powerful."

Marcus looked around.

"No. Money did."

Cassian laughed.

"Still arrogant."

Then a screen descended from the ceiling.

Camille appeared live.

She sat in a room somewhere else.

Older.

Thin.

But alive.

Marcus whispered her name.

Camille closed her eyes.

"Marcus."

For thirteen years, he had imagined that voice in dreams.

Now he could barely speak.

"Why?"

Camille looked directly into the camera.

"Because Adrian gave me a choice."

Marcus's face hardened.

"Where is he?"

"Dead."

Silence.

"When?"

"Nine years ago."

Cassian's voice returned.

"My father died believing you stole everything from him."

Marcus looked toward the speaker.

"Your father tried to destroy my family."

"His family."

"No."

Cassian stepped from a dark hallway.

He resembled Marcus enough to be unmistakable.

Same eyes.

Same jaw.

But his smile belonged to someone else.

Odalys followed behind him.

Aaron struggled against the restraints.

Marcus looked at Odalys.

"Where's Silas?"

"Safe."

"Is he Adrian's son too?"

Cassian smiled.

"No."

Elena exhaled with relief so sharp it hurt.

Cassian continued.

"But his mother worked for my father."

Marcus's expression darkened.

"So Silas was recruited."

"Raised."

Odalys smiled.

"Some people inherit money, Marcus. Others inherit purpose."

"You call abusing my daughter purpose?"

Odalys's smile vanished.

"Your daughter possesses assets stolen from mine."

"Camille legally inherited them."

"My grandfather intended Crane wealth to remain Crane wealth."

Marcus looked at her.

"You attacked a pregnant woman because you're angry about a dead man's will?"

"No."

Cassian answered.

"We need Elena because of what Camille built."

Elena leaned closer to the screen.

Marcus asked, "What did she build?"

Camille closed her eyes.

Cassian smiled.

"The one thing even you never found."

He pressed a button.

Another image appeared.

A diagram of interconnected companies.

Trusts.

Ports.

Medical networks.

Banks.

Data centers.

At the center was a name.

THE COVENANT.

Marcus stared.

"What is that?"

Camille spoke.

"A ledger."

"Of what?"

"Everything."

Cassian answered.

"Bribes. assassinations. political payments. manipulated inheritances. manufactured marriages. engineered bankruptcies."

Marcus looked toward Camille.

"You found it?"

"I created it."

Cassian's smile widened.

"And she encrypted it so beautifully that nobody can open it."

Marcus understood.

"Elena."

Camille began crying.

"The encryption key was designed around Elena's biometric profile."

Elena stared at the monitor.

Her mother had made her the key.

Cassian continued.

"Which means your daughter was never merely an heiress."

May you like

He looked directly toward a hidden camera, almost as if he knew Elena was watching.

"She is the vault."
