Chapter 5 - The Father's Name on the Threat)

When Marcus returned to Elena's room, she had locked the door.

He stopped outside.

"Elena."

"Tell security to stay back."

"They already are."

"Are you armed?"

A pause.

"No."

"Prove it."

Marcus slowly opened his jacket in view of the camera.

Nothing.

Elena unlocked the door.

He entered.

She remained across the room.

"What did Aaron mean?"

"I don't know."

"He pointed at you."

"I saw."

"He said Mom disappeared because you threatened me."

"No. He said someone told her you would die if she stayed. Then he pointed at me."

"That's not better."

Marcus rubbed his face.

"I never threatened your mother."

"Could someone have used your name?"

"Yes."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

Elena laughed bitterly.

"That's becoming our family motto."

Marcus accepted that without argument.

He took something from his pocket.

A small brass key.

"Aaron gave this to me before surgery."

"When?"

"While the doctors were preparing him. I didn't realize what it was."

Elena recognized the symbol engraved into the metal.

A circle crossed by three vertical lines.

She had seen it before.

On her mother's old jewelry box.

"Where does it go?"

"I don't know."

Daniel entered after Elena allowed him inside.

He photographed the key.

Within twenty minutes, Osei Meridian's archival team found a matching symbol in corporate records.

It belonged to an abandoned private rail terminal outside Philadelphia.

Marcus stared at the report.

"Camille owned that property."

"Why?"

"She bought it through a shell company the year before she died."

Elena looked at him.

"And you never knew?"

"Apparently there were many things about my wife I never knew."

That evening, Daniel led a team to the terminal.

Elena stayed connected through video again.

The building had not been used commercially in seventeen years.

Dust covered the ticket hall.

Windows were boarded.

A maintenance corridor led underground.

The brass key opened a narrow steel locker.

Inside was a laptop.

A satellite phone.

And fifteen sealed envelopes.

Each envelope displayed a year.

The first was the year Camille died.

The final was the current year.

Elena felt her chest tighten.

"Open this year's."

Daniel did.

Inside was a letter.

Elena recognized the handwriting instantly.

Camille's.

My dearest Elena,

If you are reading this, then either I failed to protect you, or you finally became strong enough to survive knowing why I left.

Elena covered her mouth.

Marcus moved beside her.

The letter continued.

I was not poisoned by one person.

I was poisoned by a system.

A group of investors, attorneys, trustees, and executives had created what they called the Continuity Circle. They believed family companies should never belong to individuals. Only bloodlines mattered.

When heirs resisted, they manipulated marriages.

When marriages failed, they manipulated children.

When owners died, trustees inherited control.

Marcus whispered, "Jesus."

Elena kept reading.

I discovered that our marriage had been studied before Marcus ever met me.

Her father stopped breathing.

The Circle wanted Crane assets combined with Osei Meridian.

Our relationship accidentally accomplished what they wanted.

But Marcus refused outside control.

So they turned toward our child.

Elena felt the baby move.

The final lines were worse.

If Elena ever becomes pregnant, they will return.

Do not trust anyone who arrives through love.

Do not trust anyone who arrives through fear.

And Marcus, if you are reading this beside her, I need you to understand something.

You were never the threat.

But someone has been using your name for years.

Elena looked at Marcus.

His eyes were wet.

There was more.

The person responsible carries your blood.

Marcus whispered, "No."

Elena frowned.

"What?"

Marcus stepped backward.

Daniel looked at him.

"You know what that means?"

Marcus sat down.

"I had a brother."

Elena stared.

"You told me you were an only child."

"I was raised as one."

His younger brother, Adrian Osei, had disappeared when Marcus was twenty-three.

Adrian was brilliant, unstable, and obsessed with the idea that Marcus had stolen the life that should have belonged to him.

Their father had chosen Marcus to inherit the family's small engineering business.

Adrian vanished soon afterward.

"I searched for him for years."

"What happened?"

"Police found a body after a boating accident."

Elena almost laughed at the horrifying familiarity.

"A body you didn't personally identify?"

Marcus closed his eyes.

"No."

Daniel's phone rang.

He answered.

Then looked at Marcus.

"Aaron survived surgery."

Marcus stood.

"But"

"He says he will only speak to Elena."

An hour later, they transferred Aaron to a secured room.

Elena was wheeled there.

Aaron looked exhausted.

He apologized before she spoke.

"I wasn't betraying your father."

"You helped my mother disappear."

"Because she begged me."

"Where is she?"

"I don't know."

"Did you ever know?"

"For three years."

Elena leaned forward.

"Where?"

"Canada. Then Iceland. Then Belgium."

"Why move?"

"She believed Adrian was following her."

Marcus stiffened.

"You saw my brother?"

Aaron looked at him.

"No."

"Then why believe he was alive?"

"Because Camille received photographs."

"What photographs?"

"Of Elena."

The room became silent.

Aaron looked at Elena.

"Every birthday. Every school. Every apartment."

Elena felt nauseated.

"Who took them?"

"I don't know."

Aaron reached weakly toward the bedside drawer.

A nurse handed him a plastic evidence bag.

Inside was an old photograph.

Two young men stood beside a race car.

Marcus.

And another man who looked almost identical.

Adrian.

Aaron tapped the second face.

"The man who stabbed me had his eyes."

Marcus stared at the photograph.

"Adrian would be sixty."

"The attacker wasn't sixty."

Elena understood.

"A son?"

Aaron nodded.

"Maybe."

Marcus's phone suddenly vibrated.

Unknown number.

He answered on speaker.

Silas's voice came through.

"Marcus."

Everyone froze.

Marcus's tone turned deadly calm.

"Where are you?"

"Doesn't matter."

"You're going to prison."

Silas laughed nervously.

"You still think this is about your daughter's money."

"What is it about?"

A pause.

May you like

Then Silas said something that made Elena's heart stop.

"Ask Elena why her baby already has a second birth certificate."
