Chapter 11 - Zurich, 1998)

Marcus did not deny it.

That was almost worse.

They returned to Elena's secure room.

Daniel closed the door.

Marcus stood by the window for several minutes before speaking.

"I was twenty-nine."

Elena waited.

"Osei Meridian was small. We had contracts, debt, and ambition."

"And the Circle?"

"They approached me."

"You joined."

"Yes."

The word landed heavily.

Marcus continued.

"They presented themselves as a private consortium protecting family-owned companies from hostile takeovers."

"And you believed them?"

"At first."

"What did membership require?"

"Information. introductions. coordinated investments."

"Anything illegal?"

"Eventually."

Elena folded her arms.

"What did you do?"

Marcus looked at her.

"I helped force a competitor into bankruptcy."

"How?"

"We pulled financing simultaneously through several banks. Suppliers canceled contracts. Insurers raised premiums."

"Was the company actually failing?"

"No."

"How many people lost jobs?"

"Almost four thousand."

Elena stared.

Marcus did not defend himself.

"Anything else?"

"That was enough for me."

"No. Tell me all of it."

He nodded.

"One executive who resisted us later died in a car accident."

"Did you cause it?"

"No."

"Did you know they would?"

"No."

"Do you believe that?"

Marcus looked away.

Elena understood.

He had spent years asking himself the same question.

"I left the Circle after Zurich."

"What happened there?"

"A meeting. They wanted me to sign control agreements transferring emergency voting rights to the consortium."

"You refused."

"Yes."

"And Mom?"

"She was with me."

Elena's eyes widened.

"She knew?"

"That's when she began investigating."

The pieces finally aligned.

Camille's secret records.

The Covenant.

Her disappearance.

Marcus's paranoia.

The hidden inheritance.

Marcus continued.

"After we left, the Circle began attacking Osei Meridian. Contracts disappeared. Banks withdrew. Regulators arrived. Somehow we survived."

"Because Mom fought them."

"Because your mother was terrifying."

Elena smiled faintly through tears.

"Sounds familiar."

Marcus smiled too.

Then grew serious.

"Camille believed someone inside the Circle wanted to use our marriage to consolidate assets."

"Adrian?"

"Possibly."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I was ashamed."

Elena looked at him.

"I spent my life teaching you that character mattered more than status. How could I tell you I once helped destroy thousands of people's livelihoods because I wanted to become richer faster?"

Silence.

"Maybe by telling me the truth."

Marcus nodded.

"Yes."

The answer was simple.

Painfully simple.

Elena's anger did not disappear.

But it changed.

Marcus had failed her.

He was not secretly innocent.

Yet he had spent decades trying to undo something he had once helped build.

There was a difference between a person who made terrible choices and changed, and one who kept choosing harm whenever it became profitable.

Silas had taught her that.

A message arrived from Daniel's team.

They had located the active Covenant node inside St. Catherine.

It was beneath the hospital.

An old data center built during renovation twelve years earlier.

Marcus frowned.

"I didn't authorize a private server installation."

Records showed someone else had.

The approval signature belonged to Camille Osei.

Dated eighteen months after her supposed death.

Elena stared.

"She was here."

"Apparently."

"After disappearing?"

"Yes."

Security opened the data center.

At the center stood a black server rack disconnected from the hospital network.

No external access.

No obvious controls.

Only one small biometric panel.

Elena felt goosebumps rise across her arms.

The panel contained a palm reader.

A camera.

And a blood-sample slot.

Daniel looked at her.

"Your mother built it for you."

Marcus said immediately, "She's not touching it."

Elena almost smiled.

"I'm thirty-two."

"Still my daughter."

"I own two billion dollars apparently."

"Still my daughter."

Daniel interrupted.

"We have another problem."

"What?"

"The server detected our entry."

A red indicator blinked.

A countdown appeared.

59:43.

59:42.

59:41.

Elena stared.

"What happens at zero?"

Daniel examined the system.

"We don't know."

Then the screen displayed a sentence.

WELCOME, ELENA.

Her heartbeat accelerated.

A second line appeared.

IF MARCUS IS WITH YOU, ASK HIM TO LEAVE.

Marcus stared at it.

Elena whispered, "Mom knew we'd come here."

Then another message.

ELENA MUST CHOOSE ALONE.

The countdown continued.

58:57.

58:56.

58:55.
