Chapter 2 - Eleven Minutes in the Dark)

Emergency lights flickered red along the floor.

Elena grabbed the side rail.

"Marcus?"

"I'm here."

She heard movement.

A crash in the corridor.

Then Daniel's voice.

"Stay inside!"

Marcus moved toward Elena's bed instead of the door.

Somewhere beyond the room, alarms began sounding.

The fetal monitor continued running on backup power.

Elena's breathing quickened.

"What's happening?"

"Hospital generators should already be online."

"So why aren't the lights back?"

Marcus did not answer.

That was answer enough.

This was intentional.

Footsteps raced past the door.

Then the handle moved.

Marcus immediately stepped between Elena and the entrance.

The door opened.

Nurse Priya appeared.

"Mr. Osei, we need to move Elena."

Marcus did not move.

Priya stared at him.

"Now."

"What happened?"

"Someone accessed the medical gas control room."

Elena felt the blood leave her face.

Priya continued.

"Nothing was released, but we have to relocate every high-risk patient on this floor."

Marcus studied her for half a second.

Then nodded.

They transferred Elena to a wheelchair because Dr. Warren would not allow her to walk.

Daniel joined them in the corridor.

Hospital security formed a perimeter around the elevator.

"No elevator," Marcus said.

"Agreed."

They moved toward the secure stairwell.

Elena looked back.

Through the emergency lighting, she saw someone standing at the far end of the corridor.

Blue scrubs.

Surgical mask.

A woman.

For one moment the figure stared directly at her.

Then disappeared around the corner.

"Wait."

Marcus stopped.

"What?"

"Someone was there."

Daniel immediately signaled security.

They searched.

No one.

But on the floor where the figure had stood, security found a plastic employee badge.

The photograph had been scraped away.

Only the name remained.

Marion Vale.

Elena had never heard it.

Marcus had.

She knew because his hand tightened around the badge.

"Who is she?"

"I don't know."

"You're lying."

"Elena"

"No more."

Marcus looked toward Daniel.

Daniel's silence confirmed everything.

Elena pointed at both men.

"No more secrets. Not while somebody is walking around a hospital trying to reach me."

Marcus slowly nodded.

They moved Elena to an older maternity wing that had been closed for renovation.

It was ugly but secure.

Only one entrance.

No public elevator access.

Two armed private security officers remained outside.

Marcus stood near the window.

"Your mother didn't die from an aneurysm."

Elena stared at him.

The words landed more softly than she expected.

Almost gently.

That made them worse.

"What happened?"

"She was poisoned."

Elena stopped breathing.

Marcus continued.

"Officially, the toxicology findings were inconclusive. Privately, they weren't."

"Who did it?"

"I never proved that."

"Why would anyone kill Mom?"

Marcus looked at the city lights.

"Because your mother discovered that people inside our company were stealing from us."

"Your company."

"Osei Meridian."

Elena had heard the name.

Everyone had.

Osei Meridian was a privately held infrastructure and logistics conglomerate involved in ports, hospitals, transportation systems, industrial technology, and private equity.

But Elena had never connected the name to Marcus.

Osei was not exactly rare.

And Marcus had never appeared publicly.

No interviews.

No photographs in business magazines.

Nothing.

"You own Osei Meridian?"

"I founded it."

Elena almost laughed again.

"Of course you did."

"Your mother built half of it."

That silenced Elena.

Marcus turned toward her.

"Camille was smarter than I was. Better with people. Better at seeing what ambition did to them."

"And somebody killed her."

"I believe so."

"Who?"

"She had been investigating a group of executives moving money through shell companies. Before she could identify all of them, she collapsed."

Elena remembered the funeral.

Marcus barely speaking.

The closed casket.

Her own nineteen-year-old confusion.

"Why didn't police investigate?"

"They did."

"And?"

"Evidence disappeared."

Elena stared.

"From police custody?"

"Yes."

"Who could do that?"

"Someone with influence."

Silence.

Then Elena looked toward the plastic badge on the table.

"Marion Vale?"

Marcus nodded slowly.

"Camille mentioned the surname Vale in her notes."

"Who are they?"

"I've spent thirteen years trying to answer that."

A knock came.

Daniel entered.

He looked grim.

"We identified the scrub woman."

Marcus turned.

"Marion?"

"No."

He placed a printed image on the table.

Security footage.

A woman in blue scrubs.

The quality was poor, but Elena could make out her face.

She recognized her.

Not from the hospital.

From Silas's company Christmas party three years earlier.

She had been introduced as Silas's outside counsel.

Rebecca Sloan.

Elena looked at Marcus.

"She's Silas's lawyer."

Daniel nodded.

"And according to flight records, Rebecca landed this afternoon from Geneva."

Marcus frowned.

"Why Geneva?"

Daniel placed another document down.

"Because someone opened a private custodial account there this morning."

"In whose name?"

Daniel looked at Elena.

"The unborn child."

Elena's hands moved protectively around her belly.

Marcus's voice turned cold.

"Who authorized it?"

Daniel hesitated.

"According to the paperwork, Elena did."

She stared at him.

"I didn't."

"We know."

Daniel placed one last sheet down.

A signature.

Elena's signature.

Perfect.

Except for one thing.

Elena never signed her middle initial with a loop.

May you like

Her mother had.

And the forged signature looked exactly like Camille Osei's handwriting.
