Chapter 4 - The Mother Who Died Twice)

Elena stared at the photograph until the numbers blurred.

Seven months after Camille's death.

Her mother stood outside what appeared to be a coastal hotel.

She wore sunglasses and a cream coat.

Her hair was shorter.

But it was her.

Marcus said nothing for almost a minute.

Elena looked at him.

"Tell me that's fake."

"I can't."

"You knew?"

"No."

"Look at me."

He did.

"I did not know."

For once Elena believed him immediately.

The pain on Marcus's face was too raw to fake.

Daniel turned the photograph over.

There was handwriting on the back.

Not Camille's.

One sentence.

She survived because she ran.

Marcus sat down.

Elena had never seen her father collapse into a chair before.

"Where was the photograph taken?" Elena asked.

Daniel enlarged the background.

A hotel sign appeared reflected in a window.

Mariner House.

Marcus recognized it.

"Nova Scotia."

Daniel nodded.

"Closed sixteen years ago."

Elena struggled to process the impossible.

"Mom died thirteen years ago."

"Yes."

"And seven months later she was in Canada?"

"If the timestamp is authentic."

"Then whose body did we bury?"

Marcus stared at her.

That question seemed to break something.

"I don't know."

The search of the garage continued.

Inside Camille's hidden office, Daniel found old accounting records, handwritten notes, and a small cassette recorder.

Nothing explained who had recently entered.

Aaron Pike's vehicle was behind the building.

Aaron himself was gone.

Silas was gone too.

But blood was found near the rear door.

Fresh.

At 2:13 a.m., police arrived.

By 3:00, the garage became a crime scene.

Marcus remained beside Elena.

She noticed his phone vibrating constantly.

He ignored it.

"Answer."

"It can wait."

"Your secret empire might collapse."

"I'll buy another one."

Despite everything, Elena almost smiled.

Then the fetal monitor shifted.

Marcus immediately looked terrified.

"I'm fine."

"You sure?"

"Yes."

He settled back.

Elena watched him.

"Did Mom know about the inheritance?"

"She designed it."

"Why hide it from me?"

"Because money destroyed parts of her family."

"What happened?"

Marcus leaned back.

"Camille came from wealth."

Elena blinked.

"She told me Grandpa drove trucks."

"He did."

"Then"

"He owned the trucking company."

"How large?"

"Eventually, six thousand vehicles."

Elena stared.

Marcus continued.

"Your grandfather built Crane Continental Freight."

Elena's body went cold.

"Crane?"

"Yes."

Odalys Crane.

Marcus nodded slowly.

"Now you understand why I reacted to the surname."

"You knew Odalys was related to Mom?"

"I suspected."

"How?"

"Camille had an older half brother. Victor Crane."

"Odalys's father?"

"Yes."

Elena looked toward the ceiling.

She suddenly understood why Odalys had appeared almost effortlessly in Silas's life.

Why she knew things about Elena's family that Elena herself did not know.

"This wasn't an affair."

Marcus's expression hardened.

"No."

"She targeted him."

"I believe so."

"Why?"

"Your mother's estate."

Marcus explained.

Camille had inherited a minority stake in Crane Continental, but after a bitter dispute she sold most of it and used the proceeds to help Marcus build Osei Meridian.

Victor considered that money stolen from the Crane family.

For decades he fought through private courts, offshore claims, and corporate maneuvers.

He lost every time.

Then Camille died.

Marcus assumed the feud ended.

Apparently it had simply changed generations.

"Odalys wants the inheritance."

"Possibly."

"For herself?"

"Maybe not."

Elena frowned.

"Who else?"

Before Marcus could answer, Daniel called.

They had found Aaron.

He was alive.

Barely.

A surveillance camera at a gas station twelve miles from the garage captured him stumbling from an alley.

He had been stabbed.

Paramedics were transporting him to St. Catherine.

Marcus stood.

Elena stopped him.

"If he betrayed us"

"We'll find out."

Aaron arrived unconscious.

Emergency surgery began at 4:10 a.m.

At 5:26, he woke briefly.

Marcus entered alone.

Elena watched through a secure video feed with Daniel.

Aaron looked twenty years older.

His skin was gray.

His breathing shallow.

Marcus stood beside the bed.

"Who did this?"

Aaron's eyes opened.

"I'm sorry."

"For what?"

"I should have told you."

"Told me what?"

Aaron swallowed painfully.

"Camille."

Marcus froze.

"She survived."

Elena grabbed the tablet.

Aaron continued.

"I helped her disappear."

Marcus stared at him.

"You let me bury her."

"She made me."

"Why?"

"Because they told her if she stayed, Elena would die."

Marcus's face changed.

Aaron coughed.

Blood appeared at the corner of his mouth.

Marcus leaned closer.

"Who?"

Aaron tried to speak.

No sound came.

"Who threatened my daughter?"

Aaron lifted one trembling hand.

He pointed toward Marcus.

Then he whispered one word.

"You."

The monitor alarmed.

Doctors rushed in.

The feed disconnected.

Elena sat frozen.

Daniel slowly turned toward her.

Neither spoke.

Because there were only two possibilities.

May you like

Aaron was delirious.

Or Marcus Osei was not the man Elena believed he was either.
