Chapter 13 - The Doctor Beside Her Bed)

They moved instantly.

Priya disconnected Elena's medication pump before returning upstairs.

Toxicology found the altered dosage would not necessarily have killed Elena.

It could have triggered severe blood pressure changes.

Potentially emergency delivery.

Potentially unconsciousness.

Exactly the condition Silas's guardianship paperwork anticipated.

Dr. Warren disappeared.

Her car remained in the hospital garage.

Security footage showed her entering a staff stairwell.

Never exiting.

Marcus ordered every level searched.

Elena sat in a secure room with Priya.

For the first time, the hospital itself felt hostile.

Every nurse.

Every physician.

Every orderly.

Anyone could belong to the Circle.

Then Elena remembered something.

"Priya."

"Yes?"

"When Odalys attacked me, who assigned you to my room?"

Priya thought.

"Dr. Warren changed assignments that afternoon."

"Why?"

"She said your usual nurse had exceeded hours."

"Who was my usual nurse?"

"Melissa Grant."

"Where is she?"

Priya checked.

Melissa had called in sick.

Elena's instincts sharpened.

"Call her."

No answer.

Police went to Melissa's apartment.

The door was open.

Apartment empty.

No signs of struggle.

On the kitchen table was a handwritten note.

I'M SORRY.

Meanwhile Daniel dug into Dr. Warren.

Her credentials were legitimate.

Her medical career was real.

No obvious criminal history.

But she had attended medical school through a scholarship funded by a foundation.

Vale Heritage Trust.

Marcus whispered, "Cassian."

The foundation had paid tuition for dozens of doctors, lawyers, accountants, judges, and civil servants over thirty years.

Not all would be corrupt.

Some might never know who funded them.

But Dr. Warren clearly did.

Security finally found her.

Inside the closed neonatal wing.

She was standing beside an incubator.

Alone.

Daniel's team confronted her.

Dr. Warren did not resist.

She asked to speak with Elena.

Marcus refused.

Elena accepted.

Through secure video, Dr. Warren looked exhausted.

"I'm sorry."

Elena stared at her.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

"I never wanted you hurt."

"You changed my medication."

"I was told it would induce labor safely."

"Why?"

"To protect the baby."

Elena laughed.

"From whom?"

Dr. Warren's eyes filled.

"From Cassian."

Silence.

Elena leaned forward.

"Explain."

Dr. Warren said Cassian's organization fractured years earlier.

Two groups emerged.

One wanted the Covenant activated.

The other wanted it destroyed.

Cassian wanted control.

But several Circle defectors believed only Elena could safely activate Camille's system.

"Then why induce labor?"

"Because Cassian had arranged to abduct you during transport if you remained pregnant."

Marcus stared.

Dr. Warren continued.

"The plan was to create a medically controlled premature delivery, move the baby to a secure neonatal facility, and separate the biometric targets."

Elena felt sick.

"You were going to steal my child to protect him?"

"I was trying to keep both of you alive."

"Without telling me."

Dr. Warren closed her eyes.

"Yes."

Elena looked toward Marcus.

There it was again.

Protection without consent.

The poison that seemed to run through every generation.

"No," Elena said.

Dr. Warren opened her eyes.

"No what?"

"No more people deciding what happens to me because they think their reason is noble."

Dr. Warren said nothing.

"You're going to tell investigators everything."

"I will."

"Every name."

"Yes."

"Every instruction."

"Yes."

"And if you lie"

"I won't."

Elena ended the call.

Marcus watched her.

"You handled that better than I would."

"I know."

He smiled faintly.

The Covenant activation triggered arrests around the world.

Executives resigned.

Accounts froze.

Three law firms were raided.

A former senator was questioned.

A European shipping billionaire disappeared from his yacht.

And Osei Meridian's stock-linked private bonds collapsed as Marcus's past connections became public.

Headlines called him founder, conspirator, whistleblower, predator, victim, architect, criminal.

Depending on the outlet.

Marcus voluntarily met federal investigators.

Elena asked whether he would be arrested.

"Maybe."

"Are you afraid?"

"Yes."

She had never heard him admit fear so easily.

He kissed her forehead.

"That's probably healthy."

Silas accepted a cooperation agreement.

Not freedom.

Never that.

But reduced sentencing recommendations in exchange for evidence against Cassian's network.

Odalys refused every deal.

She claimed the Cranes were the true victims.

Three days later, Elena's contractions returned.

This time they did not stop.

Dr. Warren was gone.

A new obstetric team took over.

Priya remained beside Elena.

Marcus was in a federal interview room across the city when Daniel called him.

He arrived twenty minutes later.

Elena screamed at him for being late.

Then screamed because he tried to apologize during a contraction.

Six hours later, at thirty-four weeks and two days, Elena gave birth to a boy.

Small.

Furious.

Alive.

The moment his cry filled the delivery room, every conspiracy disappeared for several seconds.

Elena sobbed.

Marcus sobbed harder.

Priya laughed at both of them.

"What are you naming him?" she asked.

Elena looked at her son.

She had once planned to let Silas choose.

That person no longer existed.

"Julian."

Marcus smiled.

"Your mother's father's name."

"I know."

Baby Julian needed neonatal observation but breathed independently.

Healthy weight for his gestation.

Strong heart.

No immediate complications.

Elena touched one tiny hand through the incubator opening.

For the first time, she felt peace.

Then Daniel entered.

His expression destroyed it.

"We found Camille."

Elena stood too fast.

"Where?"

Daniel looked at Marcus.

"Philadelphia."

"Alive?"

"Yes."

Elena began crying.

Marcus grabbed the chair beside him.

Daniel continued.

"She walked into an FBI field office forty minutes ago."

Marcus whispered, "She's coming home."

Daniel's expression remained grim.

"There's something else."

"What?"

"She wasn't alone."

Elena looked at him.

Daniel placed a photograph on the table.

Camille stood inside the federal office.

Beside her was a man in handcuffs.

May you like

Cassian Vale.

And Camille's hand was resting protectively on his shoulder.
