Chapter 12 - The Choice Camille Left Behind)

Marcus refused to leave.

Elena refused to begin until he did.

They argued for three minutes while the countdown continued.

Finally Marcus walked outside the data center.

Daniel remained because Elena insisted she needed someone who understood the technology.

The screen changed.

STEP 1.

IDENTITY.

Elena pressed her palm to the scanner.

Confirmed.

STEP 2.

VOICE.

A phrase appeared.

My name is Elena Camille Osei.

She read it.

Confirmed.

STEP 3.

BLOOD.

Priya had followed them downstairs and drew a small sample.

The machine processed it.

Confirmed.

Then everything stopped.

The countdown disappeared.

A video began.

Camille appeared.

Not live.

Recorded.

She looked younger than the woman Elena had seen during Cassian's call.

"Hello, my beautiful girl."

Elena started crying immediately.

Camille smiled sadly.

"If you're watching this, then the thing I feared most has happened. The Circle found its way back to you."

She explained the Covenant.

For fifteen years, Camille had infiltrated the Circle's financial structure.

Not alone.

Judges.

Accountants.

Bank employees.

Victims.

Former members.

People whose families had been destroyed.

Together they assembled evidence.

But simply publishing it would cause chaos.

Hundreds of legitimate companies were entangled with criminal ownership structures.

Millions of employees depended on them.

So Camille built a controlled exposure mechanism.

The Covenant could freeze hidden Circle assets.

Transfer temporary voting control to independent trustees.

Release verified evidence to authorities.

And protect certain innocent beneficiaries.

Elena whispered, "Why me?"

The recording continued as though Camille heard her.

"Because I could not trust Marcus with this."

Elena stiffened.

"Not because your father is evil. Because guilt makes him dangerous. Marcus would sacrifice himself too easily. He would destroy everything if he believed it protected you."

Elena almost laughed through tears.

Accurate.

"I needed someone who could feel fear and still think."

Camille smiled.

"That was always you."

The screen changed.

Two options.

ACTIVATE COVENANT.

DESTROY COVENANT.

Daniel stared.

"That's it?"

Elena looked at him.

"Nothing is ever that simple."

She was right.

A third message appeared.

ACTIVATION WILL EXPOSE ALL PARTICIPANTS, INCLUDING MARCUS OSEI.

Elena's chest tightened.

Marcus's Zurich actions.

The bankruptcy.

Potential criminal liability.

Corporate destruction.

Public scandal.

If she activated the Covenant, her father's empire might fall with the criminals he once helped.

If she destroyed it, the Circle survived.

Daniel said quietly, "You don't have to decide now."

The countdown returned.

12:00.

Elena laughed in disbelief.

"Apparently I do."

Outside, Marcus watched through the glass.

He could not see the screen clearly.

Elena opened the door.

"Come in."

"I thought Camille"

"I don't care."

Marcus entered.

She showed him.

He read the warning.

Then he said, "Activate it."

Elena stared.

"You could lose everything."

"I know."

"You could go to prison."

"Possibly."

"Osei Meridian could collapse."

"It might."

"Thousands of employees"

"Will be protected if Camille built this properly."

"How do you know?"

"I don't."

Marcus looked at her.

"But if you destroy the evidence to protect me, then I teach you exactly the lesson Silas wanted you to learn."

"What lesson?"

"That powerful men deserve protection from the consequences of their choices."

Elena began crying.

Marcus touched her cheek.

"Don't protect me from mine."

She looked at Daniel.

He nodded.

Elena pressed ACTIVATE.

Nothing happened.

Then every server light illuminated.

Files began transferring.

Authorities in six countries received encrypted evidence packages.

Banks received freeze orders previously prepared through legal mechanisms.

Independent directors received emergency voting certifications.

Investigative journalists received dead-man packets.

And somewhere, Cassian Vale realized the world he had spent his life trying to inherit was disappearing.

Marcus's phone began ringing.

He ignored it.

Elena's phone rang too.

Silas's attorney.

Ignored.

Then a secure government line called Daniel.

He answered.

His expression changed.

"What?"

He looked at Marcus.

"The Covenant identified forty-three current members."

"Names?"

Daniel swallowed.

"One of them is currently inside this hospital."

Marcus looked toward the door.

"Who?"

Daniel turned the tablet around.

The photograph showed Dr. Evelyn Warren.

Elena's obstetrician.

At that exact moment, every medical alarm in the room above them activated.

Priya's phone rang.

She answered.

Then her face went white.

"Elena's medication pump."

Elena stared.

May you like

"What about it?"

Priya whispered, "Someone just remotely changed the dosage."
