Chapter 9 - The Family Name on the Ledger)

Claire woke fully the next morning.
Daniel was sitting in the chair near the window.
Emma slept curled beside her.
Claire looked at Daniel.
"You found the drive."
"Yes."
"Rebecca?"
"Has a copy."
"Good."
Daniel waited.
Claire looked older than thirty four.
Not because of lines or gray hair.
Because of exhaustion.
He said quietly, "Robert."
Claire closed her eyes.
"You figured it out."
"The initials."
"He started it."
"Why?"
"Money."
Daniel laughed without humor.
"He already has money."
"People who steal millions rarely do it because they're hungry."
Daniel looked at Emma.
"How long did you know?"
"I suspected him before I went to Bellamy."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Claire's eyes hardened.
"I tried."
The answer landed exactly where it should.
Daniel nodded.
"You're right."
"I wasn't sure how deep it went."
"He introduced me to Vanessa."
"Yes."
Daniel stood.
"Why keep you alive?"
"The drive."
"They could have killed you and searched for it."
"They didn't know whether I had sent copies elsewhere."
Daniel understood.
"As long as you were alive, they could question you."
Claire nodded.
"And they needed me to unlock part of the encrypted accounting archive."
"Did you?"
"No."
A trace of the old Claire appeared.
Stubborn.
Dry.
Almost amused.
Daniel felt tears press behind his eyes.
"Eleven months."
Claire looked away.
"I counted two hundred sixteen days before Vanessa realized I was marking the wall and painted over it."
Daniel could not speak.
Claire looked at Emma.
"I started again under the shelf."
Daniel whispered, "I married her."
Claire's face tightened.
"I know."
"She told me."
Daniel waited for anger.
Claire's voice remained quiet.
"That hurt."
"I'm sorry."
"I know you are."
"I should have believed Emma."
"Yes."
He nodded.
That one hurt more.
Claire continued.
"But Vanessa designed the lie around what adults believe. Paperwork. Cameras. signatures. Emma didn't care about any of those things. She cared about what I promised."
Daniel wiped his eyes.
Claire reached toward him.
Her hand stopped halfway.
He took it.
Not romantically.
Not as husband and wife.
As two people joined forever by the little girl asleep between them.
Rebecca entered with news.
Robert's house was empty.
His phone was off.
Marcus's apartment had been cleared.
Vanessa's vehicle was found near a private air terminal.
The aircraft scheduled there never departed because federal agents had alerted flight control before takeoff.
But the three suspects had disappeared before officers arrived.
"Someone warned them," Rebecca said.
Claire sat straighter.
"Harold Pierce."
"The trust manager?"
"Former manager."
"We've been looking for him."
"He's not the leak."
"Then who?"
Claire thought.
"Bellamy's attorney."
Daniel frowned.
"Jonathan Reed?"
Claire nodded.
"He created Merrow."
Rebecca immediately called another officer.
Twenty minutes later they learned Jonathan Reed had left his office carrying two boxes and had not returned.
The conspiracy was expanding.
But the encrypted drive gave investigators a map.
Merrow paid fake consulting invoices to seven companies.
Those companies purchased real estate.
One warehouse belonged to Robert Carter.
A second property sat beside an abandoned trucking depot outside the city.
Security records showed Marcus had visited it regularly.
Police raided the depot.
Empty.
But they found medical supplies matching those used on Claire.
They also found several passports.
Vanessa Hale.
Marcus Hale.
Robert Carter.
Different names.
Different photographs.
Escape identities.
One passport contained a boarding reservation for that evening.
Destination Montreal.
Rebecca ordered alerts at airports and border crossings.
Daniel stayed at the hospital.
For the first time, he chose the place he was actually needed.
Emma woke.
Claire told her a carefully limited version of the truth.
"Vanessa did something very wrong."
Emma looked at Daniel.
"Because Mom found out she was stealing?"
Daniel stared.
"How did you know?"
Emma took out her notebook.
"I listened."
Claire almost smiled.
Emma continued.
"Is Vanessa going to jail?"
"If police find her."
"They will."
Claire touched her hair.
"How are you so sure?"
Emma looked toward Rebecca.
"Because grown ups finally believe me."
Rebecca heard.
She looked down.
The sentence was not an accusation.
That made it worse.
At six thirty that evening, a border officer near Vermont stopped a black SUV.
The driver was Robert Carter.
Marcus sat beside him.
Vanessa was not in the vehicle.
Robert refused to speak.
Marcus asked for an attorney.
In the back seat officers found cash, passports and a loaded phone containing messages.
One message had been sent forty minutes earlier.
V: I am not going with you.
R: You cannot stay.
V: I have something they need.
R: What?
V: Emma.
Daniel received the call at 6:44.
May you like
He looked toward the hospital bed.
Emma was gone.
