Chapter 6 - Claire Counts the Days in Darkness)

Claire measured time using meals.

Morning meant water and a nutrition drink.

Evening meant soup, bread or something soft.

Sometimes twelve hours separated them.

Sometimes twenty.

Vanessa deliberately disrupted the schedule.

Claire understood why.

People lost strength when they lost time.

The old storage annex was not a functioning freezer.

The main refrigeration system had been disconnected years earlier.

A small ventilation line prevented suffocation.

The space remained cold because it shared insulated walls with the active walk in freezer.

Cold enough to hurt.

Not cold enough to kill quickly.

Vanessa needed Claire alive.

At first Claire did not understand why.

During the first week, Marcus took her phone, bag and shoes.

He demanded passwords.

Bank accounts.

Cloud storage.

Work server.

Claire gave him false answers.

He threatened Emma.

She gave him the correct ones.

Marcus deleted files.

Vanessa forged documents.

They staged the car.

They wrote the letter using samples of Claire's handwriting.

But one file remained missing.

The complete Merrow report.

Claire had copied it onto a small encrypted drive.

Vanessa believed Claire had hidden it somewhere.

She had.

Three hours before entering Bellamy, Claire had placed the drive inside Emma's old red toy mailbox in Daniel's garage.

Claire had intended to tell Daniel where it was after confronting Vanessa.

She never got the chance.

For months Vanessa demanded the location.

Claire refused.

That was why she remained alive.

At first Claire believed Daniel would realize immediately.

Then a week passed.

Two.

A month.

She began to understand how effectively Vanessa had built the disappearance.

The cruelest moment came after almost three months.

Vanessa entered the annex alone.

She wore an expensive black dress.

A diamond ring glittered on her hand.

Claire stared at it.

Vanessa noticed.

"Daniel proposed."

Claire's stomach twisted.

Vanessa crouched.

"He thinks you left."

Claire said nothing.

"Emma doesn't."

Claire looked up.

Vanessa's expression tightened.

"Your daughter is becoming annoying."

Claire lunged at her.

The chain around her ankle stopped her.

Vanessa jumped backward.

Claire said, "If you touch her"

"I don't want to hurt Emma."

"Then let me out."

"I can't."

"You can."

"No. You're the only person who can connect me directly to Merrow."

"Daniel will find out."

Vanessa smiled.

"He hasn't."

Claire hated the confidence in that smile.

But she heard something beneath it.

Anxiety.

Emma.

Vanessa could control paperwork.

Adults.

Bank accounts.

Security cameras.

She could not control an eight year old who refused the central lie.

Claire began making noise whenever she heard movement near the outer freezer.

Three knocks.

Pause.

Three knocks.

Most people never noticed.

Then one day someone knocked back.

A child.

Three small taps.

Claire nearly screamed.

Emma.

She pressed herself against the door.

"Emma."

Footsteps approached.

The child disappeared.

Claire cried for the first time in weeks.

After that she became more determined.

She loosened a metal bracket from the wall.

It took days.

She used it to scratch marks beneath a shelf.

Every time Vanessa entered, Claire watched the key.

Every time Marcus delivered food, she studied the door mechanism.

The annex door opened outward.

The lock was external.

The red sensor triggered when the door moved more than two inches.

Claire could not open it.

But she discovered a narrow gap near the vent.

Sound traveled.

She began humming Emma's lullaby.

Weeks later she heard footsteps.

Small.

She hummed again.

A child's breathing paused outside.

"Em."

Then the footsteps vanished.

Claire knew.

Emma was still looking.

That was enough to keep her alive.

One night Miguel opened the outer freezer.

Claire whispered.

He approached.

Their conversation lasted less than a minute.

She knew Marcus watched staff carefully.

She told Miguel to find Emma.

Then she waited.

Days passed.

Vanessa became more nervous.

She entered the annex and demanded the drive again.

"Where is it?"

Claire smiled weakly.

"You look tired."

Vanessa struck the wall beside her.

"Daniel is asking questions."

"Good."

"Your daughter found your hair clip."

Claire remembered losing it during the struggle.

Her heart lifted.

Vanessa saw.

"You think that's good news?"

"It means Emma doesn't believe you."

"She's eight."

"Exactly."

Vanessa stared.

Claire continued.

"You picked the wrong person to underestimate."

Vanessa grabbed her by the jaw.

"You think Daniel is coming?"

Claire met her eyes.

"No."

Vanessa smiled.

Then Claire said, "I think Emma is."

Vanessa released her.

For the first time, Claire saw real fear.

The next night Marcus arrived carrying a duffel bag.

Claire watched him.

"What is that?"

"Clothes."

"For who?"

"You."

Her pulse accelerated.

"Where are we going?"

Marcus unlocked the ankle restraint.

Claire immediately kicked him.

He fell backward.

She ran.

The inner door stood open.

Beyond it, the freezer.

Then the outer freezer door began opening.

Claire heard voices.

Employees.

Marcus grabbed her from behind.

Claire screamed.

He covered her mouth.

He dragged her back into the annex.

The door closed.

He locked her again.

"You try that when we move you tomorrow and I will stop being nice."

Claire laughed through exhaustion.

"You were never nice."

Marcus leaned close.

"Tomorrow night you're gone."

He left.

Claire sat against the wall.

Tomorrow.

She had one night.

She looked at the loosened metal bracket.

May you like

Then at the narrow ventilation opening.

She began working.
