Chapter 5 - The Man Who Was Too Afraid to Speak)

Miguel sent the message.
Then he spent an hour regretting it.
He had purchased a prepaid phone two towns away.
He created a temporary account.
He had photographed Claire's bracelet through a narrow gap in the inner freezer door one night when Vanessa forgot to lock the outer freezer.
It was not enough.
He knew that.
He wanted to call the police and say everything.
But Marcus had made his threats more explicit.
A photograph of Miguel's pregnant wife leaving a doctor's office appeared inside his employee locker.
No note.
None was necessary.
Miguel became trapped between guilt and terror.
Then Claire spoke to him.
It happened at 1:20 in the morning.
The kitchen was empty.
Miguel was cleaning the floor.
A faint voice came from behind the freezer.
"Please."
He stopped.
"Please."
Miguel opened the outer door.
The hidden annex remained locked.
He approached.
"Who are you?"
Silence.
Then, "Claire."
Miguel's blood turned cold.
He knew the name.
Everyone in the city knew the story of Daniel Carter's missing former wife.
Vanessa had discussed it openly when reporters came to the restaurant months earlier.
Miguel whispered, "How long have you been in there?"
Claire laughed weakly.
It was a terrible sound.
"I stopped counting."
Miguel tried the inner handle.
Locked.
"I'll call"
"No."
"What?"
"If Marcus sees police before they open the door, he'll move me."
"Move you where?"
"I don't know."
Miguel pressed his forehead against the metal.
"I can break it."
"Alarm."
He looked upward.
A small red sensor sat above the annex panel.
Claire said, "She has it connected to her phone."
Miguel whispered, "What do I do?"
"Find my daughter."
That sentence destroyed whatever excuse remained inside him.
He sent Emma the message the next day.
But Emma did not reply.
She did something more dangerous.
She began watching Vanessa.
Whenever Vanessa left home, Emma wrote down the time.
Whenever Vanessa mentioned the restaurant, Emma listened.
On Tuesday Vanessa told Daniel she had a supplier meeting at seven.
She returned at ten carrying no paperwork.
Wednesday she went to Bellamy after midnight.
Thursday she canceled dinner because of an emergency refrigeration inspection.
Emma recorded everything in a small notebook.
Daniel was conducting his own investigation.
Rebecca discovered the notarized financial documents supposedly signed by Claire after her disappearance had been certified by a notary named James Cole.
James Cole had died two months before Claire vanished.
The stamp was fraudulent.
That reopened the case officially.
Rebecca obtained a warrant for Claire's email metadata.
One outgoing message from the afternoon she disappeared had failed to send because the attachment exceeded a server limit.
The subject line remained.
MERROW FINDINGS.
Recipient.
Daniel Carter.
Daniel read the record in Rebecca's office.
"She tried to send it to me."
"Yes."
"What happened to the attachment?"
"Local device only."
"Her laptop?"
"Police processed it."
Rebecca opened the original forensic report.
Then frowned.
"What?"
"The laptop recovered from Claire's car had been factory reset the night she disappeared."
Daniel stared.
"That was in the report?"
"It was categorized as consistent with deliberate departure."
Daniel stood.
"Everything was interpreted to fit the letter."
Rebecca did not defend it.
"Yes."
Daniel paced.
"Someone planted the letter, moved the car, wiped the computer and forged her documents."
"That is now our working theory."
"And the last confirmed place her car was parked was Bellamy."
"Yes."
Daniel turned.
"Search the restaurant."
"I need probable cause tied to a crime occurring there. We're getting close."
"Close?"
"Daniel"
"My daughter heard Claire behind a wall."
Rebecca froze.
Daniel told her about the knocking, the hair clip and the faint voice Emma claimed to hear.
He had not included the voice before because he feared it sounded irrational.
Now it sounded different.
Rebecca leaned forward.
"When?"
"Twice."
"Why didn't you tell me immediately?"
"I thought grief"
He stopped.
Shame filled his face.
Rebecca did not need to say anything.
He already knew.
She asked, "Where exactly?"
"Service hallway. Walk in freezer."
Rebecca wrote it down.
That evening Daniel told Emma they were going to stay with his sister for several days.
"Why?"
"Just until I sort something out."
"Vanessa?"
Daniel looked at her.
Emma closed her notebook.
"Dad, I know you're pretending."
He sat on the edge of her bed.
"I should have listened to you."
Emma's eyes filled.
"Is Mom alive?"
Daniel could not answer.
She whispered, "You think she is."
"I think there are things about her disappearance we did not understand."
Emma reached under her pillow.
She handed him the bent hair clip.
Then the notebook.
Then she showed him a screenshot she had taken before Miguel's message disappeared.
Daniel looked at the photograph of Claire's bracelet.
His entire body went cold.
"Where did you get this?"
"Someone sent it."
"When?"
"Yesterday."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because you told me to stay away from the restaurant."
He looked at her.
"And you thought I wouldn't let you investigate."
Emma lowered her eyes.
Daniel's fear transformed into anger.
Not at her.
At himself.
"Emma, this is dangerous."
"I know."
"No. You don't."
"My mom is there."
"We don't know that."
"Yes, we do."
Daniel looked again at the bracelet.
He could not argue.
He called Rebecca.
She instructed him to forward the screenshot.
Then she said something that made Daniel's stomach tighten.
"We found the account that sent Claire's failed email."
"What?"
"The email draft was created while her laptop was connected to Bellamy's guest network."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Rebecca continued.
"I'm requesting the search warrant tonight."
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
Vanessa had just entered the house.
He heard her heels against the floor.
Rebecca said, "Do not let her know."
Daniel lowered his voice.
"When can you search?"
"Tomorrow at the earliest."
Vanessa called from downstairs.
"Daniel?"
Emma looked at him.
Daniel ended the call.
He walked downstairs.
Vanessa stood beside the kitchen island.
"Why are there suitcases in the hallway?"
Daniel answered carefully.
"Emma and I are staying with my sister."
Vanessa's eyes changed.
"Why?"
"She needs a change of scenery."
"Tonight?"
"Yes."
Vanessa studied him.
Then she smiled.
"Of course."
But at 11:46 that night, after Daniel and Emma had left, Vanessa called Marcus.
"He knows."
Marcus said, "How much?"
"Enough."
"What about Claire?"
Vanessa stared toward the dark window.
"We move her tomorrow."
She did not know that Emma's tablet was still connected to the smart speaker in the kitchen.
May you like
She did not know the device had automatically stored part of the call.
And she did not know someone else inside Bellamy had decided he was done being afraid.
