Chapter 12 - Claire Goes Back to Bellamy)

Three months after the rescue, Claire returned to Bellamy.

She had refused twice.

The prosecutor needed her to identify several locations inside the annex before the building was released from evidence control.

Rebecca offered to arrange photographs instead.

Claire surprised everyone.

"I'll go."

Daniel drove her.

Emma wanted to come.

Claire said no.

For once Emma did not argue.

Bellamy looked different without guests.

Dust covered some tables.

The lights were reduced.

The silence made the building feel abandoned.

Claire stopped near the service hallway.

Her breathing changed.

Daniel noticed.

"We can leave."

"No."

"You don't have to prove anything."

"I'm not."

She continued.

The freezer door had been removed.

The annex was open.

Without the lock, it looked smaller.

Less powerful.

Claire stepped inside.

She saw the wall where Vanessa painted over her day marks.

The shelf.

The vent.

The floor.

Rebecca waited with an evidence technician.

Claire pointed beneath the corner shelf.

"Lift that panel."

They removed a narrow floor plate.

Underneath was a shallow cavity.

Inside sat a plastic bag.

Rebecca pulled it out.

Receipts.

A small notebook.

Two memory cards.

Claire exhaled.

"I heard Marcus hide them."

Rebecca opened the notebook.

Pages of handwritten payments.

Initials.

Dates.

One entry connected Robert directly to the forged authorization using Daniel's signature.

Rebecca smiled.

"This is enough to destroy the defense argument that Robert didn't know about the kidnapping cover up."

Claire stared at the wall.

"Good."

Then she noticed something scratched low near the floor.

EMMA.

Her own handwriting.

She had carved the name during one of the worst nights.

She crouched.

Daniel stood several feet behind her.

Claire touched the letters.

"I thought I was going to die here."

Daniel said nothing.

"I had nights where I couldn't remember your face clearly."

His eyes filled.

Claire continued.

"But I always remembered hers."

She touched Emma's name.

"Every detail."

Daniel looked away.

Claire stood.

"Let's go."

At the hallway entrance she stopped.

She turned toward the annex one final time.

Then she reached for the door.

The door had been detached and leaned against the wall.

Claire placed her hand on the stainless steel surface.

For eleven months it had represented everything she could not control.

Then she pushed it.

The heavy panel toppled flat onto a padded construction mat.

The crash echoed through the hallway.

Daniel startled.

Claire laughed.

Actually laughed.

Rebecca smiled.

"Feel better?"

Claire looked down at the fallen door.

"Yes."

Outside, sunlight hit her face.

Emma waited in the car because she had convinced Daniel's sister to drive her over after school.

Claire opened the passenger door.

"I thought I said you weren't coming."

Emma grinned.

"I didn't go inside."

Claire tried to look stern.

It failed.

Emma hugged her.

"Did you get what you needed?"

Claire looked at Bellamy.

"Yes."

The prosecutor got what he needed too.

Robert changed his plea.

So did Harold.

Marcus agreed to testify against Vanessa in exchange for a reduced sentence.

Vanessa refused every deal.

She insisted she would win at trial.

Her attorney argued Claire's captivity had been Marcus's operation.

Marcus produced text messages showing Vanessa ordering medication, food and surveillance equipment.

Vanessa claimed the messages were fabricated.

Then prosecutors recovered deleted videos from the annex camera.

One clip showed Vanessa entering.

Another showed her questioning Claire about the drive.

Another captured a sentence.

"If Emma keeps asking questions, I'll make Daniel send her away."

When Daniel watched the clip, he had to leave the room.

Emma was never allowed to see it.

The trial date was set.

Claire received a subpoena.

She stared at the paper.

For the first time since the rescue, fear returned.

Not fear of a freezer.

Fear of Vanessa's eyes.

Daniel asked, "Do you want me there?"

Claire answered immediately.

"Yes."

Then she added, "And Emma stays home."

But Emma had one final piece of evidence nobody knew existed.

The notebook she had kept while watching Vanessa.

Inside it was a date.

A time.

And a sentence Emma overheard before the rescue.

Vanessa to Marcus.

If Claire talks, Robert goes down with us.

That sentence would become the final nail in all three cases.
