Chapter 13 - The Girl Who Took the Witness Stand)

The prosecutor did not want Emma to testify.

Claire agreed.

Daniel agreed.

Rebecca agreed.

Emma disagreed.

"I heard Vanessa."

The prosecutor, Melissa Grant, crouched beside her in Claire's living room.

"I believe you."

"Then why can't I tell the judge?"

"Because we already have strong evidence."

Emma placed the notebook on the table.

Melissa opened it.

Dates.

Times.

Small observations written in an eight year old's uneven handwriting.

Vanessa left 10:20.

Back 12:08.

Took blue bag.

Said emergency freezer inspection.

Called Marcus.

Said Claire talks Robert goes down too.

Melissa's expression changed.

"When did you hear this?"

"The night before I went to the restaurant."

"Where?"

"Kitchen."

"Anyone else there?"

"No."

Melissa looked at Claire.

Claire shook her head.

"No."

Emma crossed her arms.

"Mom."

"I don't want you in that courtroom."

"Why?"

"Because you have already done enough."

"What if she says I'm lying?"

Claire's eyes filled.

"Then she says you're lying."

Emma stared.

Claire continued.

"You don't have to prove yourself to her."

Emma looked at Melissa.

"Will the notebook help?"

"Yes."

"Then use it."

Ultimately Emma did not testify at the main trial.

The notebook was authenticated through timestamps from Daniel's home network and partially corroborated by the smart speaker recording.

That was enough.

Claire took the stand instead.

Vanessa sat at the defense table.

For the first time since the freezer door opened, the two women looked directly at each other.

Vanessa appeared polished.

Hair perfect.

Dark suit.

Calm expression.

Claire wore a simple cream blouse.

No jewelry except the blue bracelet Daniel had once given her.

The prosecutor began.

"Ms. Carter, why did you go to Bellamy on the afternoon of your disappearance?"

"To confront Vanessa Hale about financial records."

"Did you intend to disappear?"

"No."

"Did you intend to abandon your daughter?"

Claire looked toward the gallery.

Daniel sat beside Rebecca.

"No."

"What happened?"

Claire told them.

The hallway.

Marcus.

The annex.

The lock.

The demands.

The forged documents.

The threats.

Months became sentences.

Eleven months became forty minutes of testimony.

At one point Vanessa's attorney asked, "Ms. Carter, you and Daniel Carter were divorced?"

"Yes."

"You knew he was romantically involved with my client?"

"Yes."

"Isn't it possible you resented that relationship?"

Claire almost smiled.

"Resentment doesn't create an eleven month captivity room."

Several jurors looked toward Vanessa.

The attorney changed direction.

"Did Vanessa personally restrain you every day?"

"No."

"Did she personally provide every meal?"

"No."

"So Marcus Hale could have operated independently."

Claire leaned toward the microphone.

"Vanessa visited me fifty seven times that I can confirm."

"How can you confirm that number?"

"I made marks underneath the shelf where she never looked."

The prosecutor later introduced photographs.

Fifty seven marks.

Vanessa's face changed.

Marcus testified the next day.

He described Robert's money scheme.

Vanessa's role.

The staged disappearance.

The decision to keep Claire captive.

His testimony was ugly because it contained self interest.

But records supported it.

Then prosecutors played the smart speaker audio.

He knows.

How much?

Enough.

We move her tomorrow.

Finally Melissa introduced Emma's notebook.

Vanessa's attorney objected.

The judge allowed limited portions supported by other evidence.

Vanessa listened as Melissa read the sentence.

If Claire talks, Robert goes down with us.

For the first time during trial, Vanessa looked toward Daniel.

He did not look back.

He was watching Claire.

The jury deliberated seven hours.

Vanessa was found guilty on kidnapping, conspiracy, financial fraud, evidence tampering, unlawful imprisonment and related charges.

She closed her eyes as the verdicts were read.

Claire did not smile.

Daniel did not celebrate.

Rebecca exhaled.

Outside the courthouse reporters gathered.

Claire refused interviews.

Emma was waiting at home.

Claire entered.

Emma ran toward her.

"Well?"

Claire knelt.

"It's over."

"She's going to jail?"

"Yes."

"For a long time?"

"Yes."

Emma hugged her.

Claire closed her eyes.

For months she imagined justice would feel like triumph.

It did not.

It felt quiet.

Safe.

Ordinary.

Exactly what she wanted.

Later that evening Daniel received another call.

Robert had pleaded guilty rather than face his own kidnapping conspiracy trial.

His agreement required surrendering property purchased with stolen funds.

Marcus had already been sentenced under his cooperation deal.

Jonathan Reed lost his law license and accepted prison time.

Harold Pierce faced fraud charges and restitution.

The entire network was dismantled.

Daniel put down the phone.

Emma looked at him.

"Is it really done?"

Daniel looked at Claire.

Claire answered.

"The part they controlled is done."

Emma frowned.

"What does that mean?"

May you like

Claire smiled.

"Now we decide what comes next."
