Chapter 8 - The Door Opens)

The rescue lasted four minutes.
Daniel remembered every second.
Claire's hand through the hidden door.
Emma screaming.
Vanessa running.
Miguel appearing from the kitchen.
Police flooding the hallway.
Rebecca shouting commands.
An officer chasing Vanessa toward the rear stairwell.
Another officer breaking the inner lock.
Daniel reaching Claire.
She weighed almost nothing in his arms.
She tried to speak.
He could not understand.
Emma climbed around him.
"Mom."
Claire opened her eyes.
The sight of her daughter changed her entire face.
"Em."
Emma touched Claire's cheek as though proving she was real.
"I'm here."
Claire started crying.
Not loudly.
She did not have enough strength.
Daniel wrapped his jacket around her.
Paramedics arrived.
They placed Claire on a stretcher.
Emma refused to release her hand.
Rebecca allowed her to walk beside it.
Daniel turned toward the freezer.
On the annex floor officers found blankets, empty water containers, food packaging, medication, an ankle restraint and a camera mounted in the upper corner.
Daniel stared at the chain.
His hands began shaking.
Rebecca stepped beside him.
"Don't."
"Don't what?"
"Go looking for Vanessa."
Daniel looked at her.
"You know me that well?"
"I know what you just saw."
Daniel turned away.
"Where is she?"
"Officers are searching."
Marcus was not inside Bellamy.
His phone was already disconnected.
Vanessa made it farther than anyone expected.
She ran through the basement wine room and emerged through an old delivery entrance.
A security officer saw her climbing into a sedan.
By the time police reached the street, she was gone.
Daniel rode with Emma to the hospital.
Claire remained conscious for part of the trip.
At one point she opened her eyes.
"Drive."
Daniel leaned closer.
"What?"
"The drive."
Emma reached into her pocket.
"I have it."
Claire's expression changed to relief.
Daniel stared.
Emma gave him the black flash drive.
"Mom hid it."
Claire whispered, "Password."
"What is it?"
She looked at Emma.
"Promise."
Emma understood.
"Never leave."
Claire nodded.
Then she lost consciousness.
Doctors treated severe dehydration, malnutrition, muscle weakness, exposure related complications and repeated sedative use.
She had no life threatening injury.
That sentence became the first good thing Daniel had heard in almost a year.
She would recover.
Slowly.
Emma sat beside the hospital bed.
For the first two hours, she did not speak.
She simply held Claire's fingers.
Daniel stood near the window.
He wanted to apologize.
There were too many apologies.
For believing the letter.
For marrying Vanessa.
For stopping the search.
For telling Emma her mother was gone.
Nothing seemed large enough.
Claire eventually woke.
She looked toward Emma first.
Then Daniel.
He approached carefully.
"Claire."
Her eyes filled.
Daniel said, "I'm sorry."
She closed her eyes.
He stopped.
Claire whispered, "Not now."
He nodded.
"Okay."
It hurt.
He deserved it.
Rebecca arrived that evening.
She brought a laptop not connected to the hospital network.
Emma supplied Claire's password.
Never leave.
The encrypted drive opened.
Inside were dozens of files.
Bank records.
Copies of forged authorizations.
Invoices.
Email screenshots.
Names.
Dates.
Audio clips.
A final video recorded by Claire in her car before entering Bellamy.
Daniel pressed play.
Claire appeared on screen.
"If you're watching this, something prevented me from coming home."
Daniel looked away.
On the video Claire explained everything she had discovered.
Merrow had diverted millions from the Carter trust.
Vanessa and Marcus used restaurant vendors to disguise the transfers.
A former trust manager named Harold Pierce approved access.
Several properties were then purchased using shell companies.
Claire had traced the money.
Then she said something unexpected.
"Daniel, this is not just about Vanessa."
Daniel looked back at the screen.
Claire continued.
"Someone inside your family provided the first signature samples and account credentials. I have not identified them yet."
The video ended.
Silence filled the hospital room.
Daniel stared at Claire.
She was asleep again.
Rebecca paused the laptop.
"You knew about this?"
"No."
"You have relatives with access?"
"Aunt Marianne. Uncle Robert. My father's former executor."
Rebecca copied the files.
Daniel looked at the screen.
A small spreadsheet contained initials beside several transactions.
VH.
MH.
HP.
And another pair.
RC.
Daniel frowned.
"Robert Carter."
Rebecca looked at him.
"Your uncle?"
Daniel nodded slowly.
His father's younger brother.
The man who had attended Claire's missing person vigils.
The man who hugged Emma and told her to pray.
The man who had introduced Daniel to Vanessa at a charity event two years earlier.
Rebecca closed the laptop.
"We need to find him."
Daniel reached for his phone.
Too late.
At that exact moment, Robert Carter entered a private aircraft terminal thirty miles away.
Marcus Hale was waiting.
Vanessa arrived six minutes later.
She was furious.
"You said Daniel would never find the drive."
Robert looked at her.
"I said Claire couldn't be allowed to deliver it."
Vanessa's voice rose.
"Your plan failed."
Robert smiled calmly.
"No."
May you like
He looked toward the runway.
"It only fails if Claire lives long enough to testify."
