Chapter 9 - the confession of daniel cross)

The tape recorder contained Daniel's confession.
Damian sat on the mausoleum floor while his father's voice returned from the dead.
"Damian, there are things I allowed because I believed keeping our family together mattered more than exposing what was happening around us."
Daniel paused on the recording.
"I was wrong."
He explained that Evelyn discovered bribery inside Cross Meridian seventeen years earlier.
At first she suspected Malcolm Crosswell.
Then she discovered Richard was coordinating payments.
Richard insisted the payments protected the company from competitors and lawsuits.
Evelyn threatened to expose everything.
Within weeks, she began receiving threats.
Daniel wanted police protection.
Evelyn refused.
She believed local officials were compromised.
Then something happened that Daniel never fully understood.
Evelyn disappeared voluntarily.
She left a message telling Daniel not to search for her.
For years, Daniel obeyed.
He staged a death certificate through contacts because Evelyn believed Richard would only stop hunting if everyone thought she was gone.
Damian stopped the tape.
"You let me believe my mother was dead."
His anger had nowhere to go.
Elena sat beside him.
"Keep listening."
Daniel's voice continued.
"By the time Gabriel Reyes came to me, I had begun to suspect Evelyn was right about everything. Gabriel discovered altered engineering reports and traced payments to R17. He believed R17 was Richard. That was partly true. Richard controlled the trust. But he did not create it."
Daniel described his final meeting with Gabriel.
They met in a parking garage outside Syracuse.
Gabriel showed him copies of the ledger.
Daniel promised to take them to federal authorities.
They separated at 9:12 p.m.
At 10:04, Gabriel's car crashed.
Daniel never saw him again.
"I do not know who caused Gabriel's crash," Daniel said.
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
"But I know Richard knew about the meeting."
The recording contained one final revelation.
Daniel had secretly contacted Evelyn months before his own death.
She was alive.
She had spent years building evidence.
They planned to expose Richard together.
Then Daniel was diagnosed with aggressive cancer.
He ran out of time.
"If Evelyn is still alive when you find this, she may not trust you."
Damian almost laughed bitterly.
Nobody trusted him.
Gabriel didn't.
His mother apparently didn't.
His father had hidden everything.
Daniel continued.
"Do not blame her. Richard spent years convincing people that Cross Meridian belonged to him in everything but name. Your mother knows things that could destroy the company."
The tape clicked.
Then Daniel's final words came.
"But Richard is not the person I fear most."
Damian leaned forward.
"The person I fear is the one who taught Richard how to hide."
The recording ended.
Detective Sloan replayed it.
No name followed.
Inside the folder they found bank records and one address in Montreal.
It matched the area where Evelyn had been photographed.
Damian wanted to leave immediately.
Sloan stopped him.
"If Richard is searching too, going there openly could lead him straight to her."
"So what do you suggest?"
"We contact Canadian authorities quietly."
Damian hated waiting.
Elena understood.
She had waited three years for answers she didn't know existed.
Back at the mansion, media pressure intensified.
Vanessa's name leaked in connection with Mia's fall.
Photographs appeared online.
Some portrayed Elena as an opportunistic employee exploiting a private accident.
Others called Vanessa a monster.
The truth became entertainment.
Elena hated it.
Mia did not understand.
She only knew strangers had begun standing outside the estate gates.
Damian offered to move them temporarily.
Elena said yes.
A small lake house owned by Cross Meridian sat several hours away.
Only a handful of security personnel knew the location.
Damian drove them personally.
Mia slept in the back seat.
Elena watched trees blur past.
"Why are you doing all this?"
"Because your husband died trying to expose something inside my company."
"That isn't what I mean."
Damian glanced at her.
"You could have given everything to police and walked away."
"I could have."
"But you're not."
He thought about Mia on the stairs.
About Vanessa's words.
You poor piece of trash.
He had spent years living in rooms where cruelty wore expensive clothing and polite smiles.
Maybe he had simply chosen not to notice.
"I heard what Vanessa said to Mia," he answered. "And I realized I had no idea what happened in my own house when I wasn't looking."
Elena said nothing.
Damian continued.
"If I walk away now, I'm doing the same thing again."
At the lake house, Mia found an old piano.
She pressed random keys until the room filled with chaotic notes.
For the first time in days Elena laughed.
Damian stood in the doorway watching.
His phone vibrated.
A secure message from Detective Sloan.
Canadian police had visited the Montreal address.
The apartment was empty.
But surveillance footage showed Evelyn leaving only twelve hours earlier.
She carried one suitcase.
A man accompanied her.
Sloan sent a photograph.
Damian enlarged it.
The man beside Evelyn was not Richard.
It was Malcolm Crosswell.
May you like
Vanessa's father.
The same man supposedly sitting in federal custody in New York.
