Chapter 12 - the price of a signature)

Elena did not show Mia the message.
She showed Detective Sloan.
Within minutes, Mia was placed under direct protection.
Her preschool closed temporarily.
The lake house became a secure location.
Damian remained with federal investigators for eleven hours.
He was not arrested.
But prosecutors made the stakes clear.
Documents listed him as contingent beneficiary of R17.
His digital signature appeared on transfers made within the past five years.
Damian denied authorizing them.
"Forensic analysis will determine that," Agent Kessler said.
"You think I moved hundreds of millions through companies I own publicly?"
"Rich people have done stranger things."
Damian leaned forward.
"My uncle forged my father's signature after Gabriel Reyes died. Why would mine be different?"
Kessler studied him.
"Then help us prove it."
Damian turned over company servers.
Private email archives.
Banking access.
Everything.
By midnight he was released.
Elena waited outside.
"You didn't have to come."
"Yes, I did."
"How's Mia?"
"Angry you wouldn't take her dollar."
Damian almost smiled.
Then Elena showed him the threat.
His expression became stone.
"I'm ending this."
"How?"
"Richard wants my signature. We'll give him the opportunity to ask."
Elena knew immediately.
"No."
"We draw him out."
"No."
"Elena."
"He threatened my child."
"Exactly."
"And you want to make us bait."
"I want to make myself bait."
Richard believed Damian could transfer control of R17.
If Damian publicly announced his willingness to settle ownership disputes, Richard might approach.
Agent Kessler hated the plan.
Detective Sloan hated it more.
Evelyn, when contacted through an encrypted channel, said only one thing.
"Richard will not come personally."
She was right.
The following afternoon, Damian released a statement announcing an internal restructuring of Cross Meridian and his intention to cooperate fully with authorities.
Hidden in the legal language was a sentence Marcus designed specifically for Richard.
All disputed legacy trusts will be resolved through direct beneficiary authorization within seventy two hours.
Six hours later, Damian received instructions.
A courier delivered a phone.
The voice said, "Tomorrow. Ten p.m. Old Meridian freight terminal."
Damian asked, "Richard?"
"No names."
"What do you want?"
"A signature."
"And I get what?"
"Proof that Gabriel's death wasn't an accident."
Elena insisted on hearing the recording.
"This is about Gabriel too."
Damian looked at her.
"It's also about Mia."
"That's why I'm not staying home while men decide what happened to my family."
Agent Kessler created a surveillance plan.
Damian would enter with concealed audio equipment.
Elena would remain in a vehicle nearby.
Federal tactical teams would surround the area.
At ten the following night, Damian entered the abandoned freight terminal.
One table stood beneath a hanging lamp.
A contract waited.
No Richard.
No Malcolm.
A speaker activated.
"Sign."
Damian looked around.
"Show me the evidence."
A screen lit.
Highway footage.
Gabriel's vehicle.
Rain.
Another black SUV closing from behind.
The SUV struck Gabriel's rear quarter panel.
His car swerved.
The footage stopped.
Damian stared.
"Who drove?"
"Sign."
"No."
The screen displayed another angle.
The SUV pulled briefly alongside Gabriel.
Through the rain streaked window, a face appeared.
Damian's blood ran cold.
It was Malcolm Crosswell.
Then a second silhouette appeared in the passenger seat.
The image was unclear.
Damian said, "Enhance it."
"Sign."
Outside, Elena watched through the surveillance feed.
Something bothered her.
Malcolm had been implicated repeatedly.
Too repeatedly.
Always visible.
Always available to blame.
Gabriel's recording said Malcolm was involved but did not give orders.
Elena looked at the terminal camera map.
Then at the contract.
"Damian," she whispered into the secure channel. "Don't touch the paper."
Agent Kessler heard her.
"Why?"
"The signature isn't the point."
Inside, Damian paused.
Elena continued.
"They want his fingerprints."
Kessler understood.
The contract could later be placed on other documents.
Or contain an embedded transfer device.
Damian stepped away.
The speaker voice changed.
"You always were slower than your mother."
Damian froze.
"Richard."
A laugh.
"You finally figured something out."
"Where are you?"
"Closer than you think."
Lights went out.
Gunfire erupted outside.
Not inside.
A distraction.
Federal teams moved.
A vehicle crashed through the south gate.
Damian dove behind concrete barriers.
Elena's surveillance van shook as another vehicle struck it.
Agents shouted.
When the lights returned, the contract was gone.
But someone had left another object on the table.
Daniel Cross's missing journal.
Damian grabbed it.
On the final page his father had written one name repeatedly.
Not Richard.
Not Malcolm.
Evelyn.
Below it:
She started R17.
Richard corrupted it.
But someone convinced both of us the other was the enemy.
Damian stared.
There had always been one more person.
One person between Evelyn and Daniel.
Someone who knew what both believed.
Someone who benefited from keeping husband and wife separated for sixteen years.
Damian turned the page.
It had been torn out.
But pressure marks from the missing page remained.
Forensics reconstructed the handwriting.

A name slowly appeared.
Howard Vale.
