Chapter 14 - the house where the dead woman lived)

The Vermont property sat beyond a narrow road surrounded by pine forest.

Federal agents arrived first.

Damian and Elena followed.

Mia remained safely with Rosa and two protective officers.

Damian hated leaving her.

Elena hated it more.

But Elena needed answers about Gabriel.

They found the house empty.

No signs of forced entry.

A kettle remained warm.

A lamp burned upstairs.

Evelyn had left minutes earlier.

On her desk were photographs.

Damian as a child.

Damian graduating college.

Damian at his father's funeral.

Damian becoming CEO.

She had watched him from a distance for sixteen years.

He picked up one photograph.

His anger became more complicated.

Elena found a picture of Gabriel.

Taken at a café.

On the back Evelyn had written:

G believes Howard can be turned.

He is wrong.

Elena closed her eyes.

Gabriel had trusted the wrong person.

Again.

A federal agent called from the basement.

They discovered a secure archive.

Evelyn had documented everything.

Bribes.

Modified reports.

Secret accounts.

Threats.

Howard's manipulation.

Richard's crimes.

Malcolm's payments.

The evidence was strong enough to dismantle entire sections of Cross Meridian and Crosswell Development.

One video file was dated the night Gabriel died.

Elena sat before the monitor.

The highway footage played.

Gabriel drove through rain.

Malcolm's SUV struck him.

Gabriel recovered.

Then another vehicle appeared.

A silver sedan.

It accelerated.

Hit Gabriel from the opposite side.

His car spun through the barrier.

The silver sedan stopped briefly.

A man stepped out.

Howard Vale.

Elena stopped breathing.

Howard walked toward Gabriel's wreck.

He remained there almost ninety seconds.

Then he returned to his vehicle.

He did not call for help.

He drove away.

The official emergency call came six minutes later from another motorist.

Elena covered her face.

Damian stood behind her.

Now they knew.

Not every detail.

But enough.

Howard had been there.

Howard had chosen to leave Gabriel dying.

Possibly after ensuring he could never testify.

Another file contained Evelyn's recorded statement.

"If this archive is discovered, I may already be dead."

Damian stared at the screen.

His mother continued.

"Howard Vale used Richard's ambition, Malcolm's greed, Daniel's fear and my disappearance to build a network none of us fully understood."

She admitted her own failures.

She created R17 secretly.

She lied to Daniel.

She disappeared instead of exposing the scheme publicly.

She believed distance protected Damian.

Instead it left him inside a company infected by the people she feared.

"I told myself I was protecting my son."

Evelyn looked into the camera.

"The truth is that I was also afraid."

Damian's eyes burned.

Elena watched silently.

Evelyn continued.

"Fear does not excuse what we do to other people."

It sounded almost like an answer to Vanessa's constant claim that she had panicked.

Different scale.

Same principle.

Choice still mattered.

An alert suddenly sounded.

Agents rushed outside.

A vehicle had been detected approaching the property.

It stopped half a mile away.

A woman emerged.

Evelyn.

Damian ran toward the road.

She stood between two agents.

For sixteen years he had imagined his mother beneath stone.

Now she stood alive beneath gray Vermont sky.

Neither moved.

Evelyn whispered, "Dami."

Damian's face tightened.

"You don't get to call me that yet."

She nodded.

Tears appeared.

"Okay."

He wanted to embrace her.

He wanted to scream.

He did neither.

Elena stepped forward.

Evelyn looked at her.

"I'm sorry."

Elena's voice was quiet.

"Did Gabriel trust you?"

"Yes."

"Did you ask him to keep investigating after he told you he was scared?"

Evelyn hesitated.

"Yes."

"Then part of what happened belongs to you too."

Evelyn nodded.

"I know."

Elena appreciated that she did not say but.

No excuses.

No redirecting.

Just responsibility.

Then Evelyn looked toward the house.

"Where's the archive?"

"Federal custody."

Relief crossed her face.

"Good."

Damian frowned.

"You don't want it?"

"No."

"Howard does."

"Howard doesn't want the evidence."

"What does he want?"

Evelyn's expression changed.

"The transfer key."

"What transfer key?"

"R17 was designed so one physical token could dissolve the trust and send every remaining asset to preselected recipients."

"Where is it?"

"I don't know."

"You created the trust."

"I hid the key seventeen years ago."

Damian stared.

"Where?"

Evelyn looked at Elena.

"With someone nobody in our world would search."

Elena slowly understood.

"Gabriel."

Evelyn nodded.

The dollar.

Elena's breath caught.

They had found microfilm inside it.

But perhaps there was something else.

She called Rosa.

"Get Mia's dollar."

Rosa found it in Mia's small backpack.

Under forensic examination, specialists discovered an embedded metallic strip between paper layers.

Not ordinary metal.

A thin encoded security element.

Evelyn confirmed it.

"The transfer key."

The most powerful object in a two billion dollar criminal network had been carried for years inside a one dollar bill.

Gabriel had kept it.

Mia had taken it to buy her mother cake.

Vanessa had recognized it.

Howard had tried to kidnap Mia to retrieve it.

Elena felt sick.

"Destroy it."

Evelyn replied, "We can't."

"Why?"

"Because if we destroy it incorrectly, the trust's contingency system distributes the funds."

"To whom?"

Evelyn's face darkened.

"Accounts Howard controls."

Damian said, "Then we transfer first."

"Federal authorities will need to supervise."

"Fine."

Evelyn shook her head.

"There's another problem."

"What?"

"The key requires two biometric authorizations."

"Whose?"

"Mine."

"And?"

Evelyn looked at Damian.

"Yours."

Damian almost laughed.

"Of course."

That evening they returned to New York under federal protection.

The plan was simple.

Use the key under government supervision.

Freeze the trust.

Secure the money.

End Howard's leverage.

For the first time, Damian believed they might actually win.

Then they reached the mansion.

The front doors were open.

Security guards were conscious but disoriented.

A sedative had been introduced into the staff coffee.

Damian ran upstairs.

"Mia?"

No answer.

Elena screamed her daughter's name.

Rosa stumbled from a hallway.

"They took her."

Elena's world stopped.

"Who?"

Rosa held out a phone left on Mia's bed.

A video began automatically.

Mia sat in a chair.

She was frightened but unharmed.

Howard Vale stepped into frame.

He held the crumpled dollar.

"Damian."

He smiled.

"You finally found your mother."

Damian's fists tightened.

Howard continued.

"Now bring her to me."

The video ended with an address.

Evelyn stared at it.

She recognized the location immediately.

May you like

Daniel Cross's abandoned childhood home.

The place where R17 had first been created.
