Chapter 5 - vanessa's second story)

Vanessa was taken in for questioning before noon.
She did not ask for Damian.
She asked for her father.
Malcolm arrived with two attorneys.
By three, Vanessa was released.
The blood in Howard's vehicle had not yet been identified.
The hotel footage showed Vanessa entering his room but also showed her leaving seventeen minutes later.
Howard appeared alive when she left.
She claimed they had discussed the canceled wedding.
Damian did not believe a word.
Neither did Detective Sloan.
But suspicion was not proof.
That evening, Damian, Elena and Marcus reviewed Gabriel's flash drive inside the mansion's secure office.
Damian had dismissed most of the remaining wedding staff.
Police had taken statements about Mia's fall.
Vanessa faced a separate investigation for child assault, but her attorneys already claimed Mia's injuries resulted from an accident.
Damian's testimony made that defense difficult.
Still, Vanessa's money bought time.
Elena was less interested in punishment than she thought she would be.
Every time she imagined Vanessa, anger burned through her.
But when she looked at Mia sleeping beside her, another emotion became stronger.
Fear.
Someone had entered her apartment.
Someone had taken Gabriel's key.
Someone had called Damian with a threat.
And Howard had vanished.
Elena wanted to leave the estate.
Damian understood.
But Detective Sloan advised against returning to Elena's previous apartment in Queens.
"If these files are connected to a larger financial crime," the detective said, "someone may believe Mrs. Reyes has more evidence."
Damian offered a guest cottage at the far end of his estate.
Elena refused at first.
Then Mia woke from a nightmare screaming about stairs.
Elena accepted for one week.
Only one.
That night, Damian discovered the Riverside files.
Riverside Towers had been a luxury apartment complex built by a Crosswell Development subsidiary four years earlier.
Cross Meridian engineers provided structural review.
Gabriel inspected foundation reinforcement.
His original report warned of substandard steel and concrete inconsistencies.
The report submitted to city inspectors was different.
His signature remained.
His conclusions did not.
Someone changed them.
The building opened.
Nothing catastrophic happened.
But Crosswell saved nearly fourteen million dollars in construction costs.
Marcus found similar altered reports on nine projects.
"This isn't just fraud," he said.
"If the materials were actually below specification, people could have been killed," Elena replied.
Damian stared at the documents.
"Who authorized payment changes?"
Marcus opened another file.
Payments flowed through shell companies.
One was called Bellweather Advisory.
Another, Hart Foundation Consulting.
Another, VM Holdings.
Elena noticed the initials.
"VM?"
Damian's jaw tightened.
"Vanessa Marie."
Marcus checked incorporation documents.
VM Holdings belonged to a trust.
The beneficiary information was sealed.
But the registration date was three years earlier.
Four days after Gabriel died.
Damian leaned back.
"Vanessa told me her father set up a family investment vehicle around then."
Marcus looked at him.
"You never checked?"
"I was dating her. Not auditing her."
Elena said nothing.
Damian heard the judgment anyway.
He deserved it.
He had spent years believing wealth protected him from being used.
Instead, it merely made manipulation more sophisticated.
At eleven that night, security notified him that Vanessa was at the gate.
Damian almost refused.
Then she said she had information about Howard.
He allowed her into the library.
Two guards remained outside.
Vanessa looked exhausted.
No makeup.
No silk gown.
No arrogance.
For a moment she looked almost ordinary.
"Where is Howard?" Damian asked.
"I don't know."
"Why did you visit him?"
"Because he called me."
"About what?"
"You."
Damian laughed once.
"Try again."
Vanessa's eyes moved toward Elena, who stood near the fireplace.
"Does she have to be here?"
"Yes."
Vanessa looked at Elena.
"I'm sorry about Mia."
Elena's expression did not move.
"No, you're sorry Damian saw you."
Vanessa flinched.
Elena continued.
"My daughter offered you one dollar for cake. You pushed her down stairs."
"I lost control."
"That isn't an explanation."
"No."
For once, Vanessa did not argue.
She turned toward Damian.
"Howard told me you found Gabriel's files."
Damian became still.
"How would he know?"
Vanessa hesitated.
"My father told him."
"So Malcolm knew about the bank box."
"Yes."
"How?"
"I don't know."
"You stole the key."
"My father did."
"And gave it to you."
Vanessa looked away.
"What did it open?"
"A safe deposit box."
Her reaction confirmed she had not known.
Damian asked, "Why were you afraid of the number?"
"Because my father has been searching for it for years."
"Why?"
"He said Gabriel stole information that could destroy our family."
Elena's voice hardened.
"Your family destroyed mine."
Vanessa looked at her.
"You think Gabriel died because of my father?"
"Did he?"
"I don't know."
Damian watched closely.
He believed her.
At least about that.
Vanessa reached into her handbag.
The security guards moved.
She slowly removed an envelope.
Inside were copies of payments.
Millions transferred from Cross Meridian accounts to shell companies.
Howard Vale's authorization appeared on most.
Then Damian saw another signature.
Richard Cross.
His uncle.
Vanessa said, "Howard wanted protection."
"From whom?"
"He wouldn't say."
"Why come to you?"
"Because he thought my father would protect him."
"Would he?"
Vanessa smiled bitterly.
"No."
She placed a small recorder on the table.
"Howard gave me this."
Damian pressed play.
Howard's voice emerged.
"If anything happens to me, Malcolm was only the middleman."
Then another voice.
Male.
Calm.
Familiar.
Damian's face changed.
Elena looked at him.
"You recognize him?"
Damian nodded slowly.
"My uncle."
The recording continued.
Richard Cross said, "Daniel should have stayed out of it. Gabriel should have too."
Howard whispered, "And Damian?"
Richard replied.
"Damian is easier to control."
Damian stopped the recording.
Vanessa stared at him.
"My father wasn't the person your father warned Gabriel about."
Damian's throat tightened.
Vanessa leaned closer.
"It was Richard."
Then the mansion lights went out.
A single gunshot cracked somewhere outside.
Elena ducked.
Security rushed into the room.
Backup lights flashed on.
Damian grabbed Elena's arm.
"Where's Mia?"
Elena's face went white.
The guest cottage.
Rosa was there with her.
Damian ran.
By the time they reached the cottage, the door was open.
Rosa lay unconscious beside the entrance.
May you like
Mia's bed was empty.
And the crumpled dollar bill was lying on the pillow.
