Chapter 13 - the quiet man behind everyone)

Howard Vale disappeared from the hospital before dawn.

Security footage showed him leaving in scrubs.

A nurse found his monitoring equipment arranged to make it appear he remained asleep.

By the time police recognized the escape, Howard had six hours.

Damian finally understood the pattern.

Howard had always been present.

Daniel trusted him with finances.

Richard trusted him with transfers.

Malcolm trusted him with accounts.

Vanessa trusted him enough to accept the recorder.

Gabriel knew Howard had information.

Every faction believed Howard belonged partly to them.

That was his power.

He never appeared to be the most dangerous person in the room.

Marcus began reconstructing R17 transactions.

For seventeen years, Howard had controlled the accounting infrastructure.

He could redirect blame with a few keystrokes.

Richard appeared to manage corruption because Howard placed his code on certain transfers.

Malcolm appeared to receive benefits because Howard routed money through Crosswell entities.

Evelyn appeared to own the trust because she originally created it.

Damian appeared to benefit because he was her successor.

Howard could make all of them look guilty.

But why?

The answer was money.

Not six hundred million.

More.

Hidden derivative accounts suggested R17 had touched nearly two billion dollars over seventeen years.

Howard had been moving portions into private vehicles.

Small enough to escape attention individually.

Together, enormous.

Agent Kessler issued national alerts.

Airports.

Borders.

Private airfields.

Damian expected Howard to flee.

Elena disagreed.

"He hasn't spent seventeen years doing this just to run."

"What does he want?"

"To finish."

"Finish what?"

She looked at Daniel's journal.

"Erase whoever can explain the truth."

That meant Evelyn.

Richard.

Malcolm.

Damian.

And potentially Vanessa.

Vanessa had been placed under temporary protective supervision after cooperating with investigators.

She hated it.

But fear had stripped away her arrogance.

When Damian visited, she looked almost unrecognizable.

"No cameras?" she asked.

"No."

"No reporters?"

"No."

She stared at him.

"I know you hate me."

Damian answered carefully.

"What I feel about you isn't important."

"It is to me."

"You pushed a child down stairs."

Vanessa looked down.

"I know."

"You threatened Elena."

"I know."

"You helped your father steal from her apartment."

"I know."

Damian did not soften.

"Then stop trying to make your regret the center of what happened."

Vanessa began to cry quietly.

He let the silence remain.

Finally she said, "Howard introduced us."

Damian frowned.

"What?"

"Three years ago."

"Our charity dinner?"

"Howard made sure I sat beside you."

Damian remembered.

He had believed it was coincidence.

Vanessa continued.

"He told my father that marrying into your family would protect us."

"From what?"

"From Richard."

"Why?"

"Because Howard had convinced my father that Richard planned to destroy Crosswell Development."

Damian almost admired the manipulation.

Howard put everyone against everyone.

Vanessa said, "I think he wanted me close to you."

"To watch me?"

"Maybe."

"Or sign things through me."

She nodded.

Then she remembered something.

"Before Gabriel died, Howard asked me whether Gabriel ever gave me anything."

"The dollar."

"I didn't tell him about it."

"Why not?"

Vanessa looked ashamed.

"Because I wanted something my father didn't have."

Power.

Even at twenty seven, Vanessa had been learning the family language.

Damian stood to leave.

Vanessa called after him.

"Mia."

He stopped.

"Is she okay?"

"She's recovering."

Vanessa nodded.

"Tell Elena..."

She stopped herself.

Damian waited.

Vanessa shook her head.

"No. Don't tell her anything. I haven't earned the right."

It was the first thing she had said in days that sounded sincere.

Later that afternoon, police located Richard.

He walked into a federal building voluntarily.

No lawyer.

No demands.

He carried a briefcase.

Inside were seventeen years of copied communications from Howard.

Richard admitted facilitating bribes.

He admitted threatening employees.

He admitted helping cover up altered engineering reports.

But he denied ordering Gabriel's death.

"Howard did."

Agent Kessler asked, "Why should we believe you?"

"You shouldn't."

Richard sounded exhausted.

"But you should believe the account records."

He gave them access keys.

Howard had created a private fund worth nearly four hundred million dollars.

On the night Gabriel died, a payment of two hundred thousand went to Malcolm.

Another payment of fifty thousand went to an unidentified driver.

Richard said Malcolm had been ordered to scare Gabriel and recover documents.

"Did Malcolm hit his car?"

"Yes."

"Did he intend to kill him?"

Richard looked away.

"I don't know."

Elena felt rage rise.

"That's convenient."

Richard faced her.

"I told Howard to stop Gabriel from going federal."

Elena stood.

Damian reached for her arm.

She pulled away.

"You told them to go after my husband."

"Yes."

"And you're sitting there pretending you didn't kill him?"

"I'm telling you the part I can prove."

Elena's voice shook.

"My daughter grew up without a father because men like you use words like pressure and leverage instead of saying what you really mean."

Richard lowered his eyes.

She continued.

"You sent dangerous people after him. You don't get to hide behind whether you personally touched the car."

Nobody spoke.

Richard finally said, "You're right."

Elena had imagined hearing a confession for years without realizing it.

Now she felt no peace.

Only grief with a name.

Agent Kessler opened another file from Richard's briefcase.

Howard's final known transfer was made that morning.

Destination.

A private medical research foundation in Vermont.

Founder.

Dr. Evelyn Cross.

Damian stared.

His mother had not merely survived.

May you like

She had built another life.

And Howard knew exactly where she was.
