Chapter 7 - what was hidden inside the cake)

The wedding cake had been scheduled for removal that morning.
Damian stopped the bakery truck at the gate.
Detective Sloan ordered the ballroom sealed.
The cake remained beneath the chandelier, elegant and absurd amid a criminal investigation.
Six tiers.
Imported sugar flowers.
Hand painted gold details.
A price approaching thirty thousand dollars.
Mia had nearly been seriously injured because she wanted one piece.
Now Howard Vale was telling them the cake contained evidence.
A bomb technician checked it first.
Nothing dangerous appeared.
Then the pastry chef arrived.
Her name was Simone Keller.
She had worked private events for twenty years.
When Sloan asked whether anyone had been near the cake without supervision, Simone hesitated.
"Miss Crosswell."
"Vanessa?"
"Yes."
"When?"
"Yesterday morning."
Damian remembered.
Before Mia entered the ballroom.
Simone continued.
"She asked everyone to leave for approximately ten minutes. She said she wanted to inspect a surprise for Mr. Cross."
"What surprise?"
"I assumed something decorative."
The cake was dismantled layer by layer.
Inside the lowest tier, behind a false foam section, investigators found a black waterproof case.
Vanessa stared at the photograph when police confronted her.
"I've never seen that."
Damian believed nothing automatically anymore.
The case contained three passports.
Two burner phones.
Cash.
And a hard drive.
One passport belonged to Howard Vale under another name.
One belonged to Malcolm Crosswell.
The third shocked everyone.
It belonged to Richard Cross.
All had travel dates scheduled for the morning after the wedding.
Malcolm was arrested before noon on financial fraud allegations connected to evidence already recovered from Gabriel's drive.
Vanessa returned to the mansion under police escort to retrieve personal items.
She saw Damian in the foyer.
"I didn't put that case there."
"Then who did?"
"I don't know."
"Your father had a passport inside."
"Maybe he did it."
"Howard said to ask Malcolm about the cake."
Vanessa's expression tightened.
"Then ask him."
"He isn't talking."
She laughed bitterly.
"Of course he isn't."
Damian studied her.
"Why?"
"Because my father has spent his entire life taking orders from men richer than he is and pretending he is one of them."
"Richard?"
Vanessa looked around, making sure police were several yards away.
"Richard has controlled Cross Meridian's political relationships for years."
"I know."
"No. You know what his official role was."
She lowered her voice.
"You don't know what he did for your father."
Damian stared.
"What did he do?"
"He made problems disappear."
"Whose problems?"
"Your family's."
Damian remembered childhood conversations stopping when he entered rooms.
His father calling Richard after midnight.
Settlement agreements.
Private investigations.
Scandals that disappeared.
He had considered it ordinary corporate crisis management.
Maybe it had been something else.
Vanessa picked up a suitcase.
Damian said, "Why did you push Mia?"
She stopped.
He had asked the question before.
This time he wanted the real answer.
Vanessa's voice became quiet.
"When she showed me that dollar, I recognized Gabriel's handwriting."
Elena had entered the foyer behind them.
She heard.
Vanessa continued.
"My father had shown me copies. He spent years looking for whatever Gabriel hid."
"So you knew Gabriel."
"No."
"But you knew about him."
"Yes."
"And you thought Mia had evidence."
Vanessa nodded.
"Why not just take the dollar?"
"I tried."
"And when a child refused, you shoved her down stairs."
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"I panicked."
Elena stepped forward.
"Stop saying that like panic pushed her."
Vanessa looked at her.
"You want me to say I'm a monster?"
"I want you to say you made a choice."
Silence.
Vanessa finally whispered, "I made a choice."
Elena felt no satisfaction.
Only exhaustion.
Vanessa turned to Damian.
"My father told me something else."
"What?"
"The night Gabriel died, he wasn't alone."
Elena's breath stopped.
"The police said he was."
"My father says someone was in Gabriel's car before the crash."
"Who?"
Vanessa looked at Damian.
"Your father."
Damian shook his head.
"Impossible."
"Why?"
"My father was in Boston that night."
"Was he?"
Damian thought back.
Daniel Cross had attended a charity dinner.
There were photographs.
But he had left early.
Vanessa continued.
"My father said Daniel met Gabriel because Gabriel finally figured out who R17 really was."
"Richard."
Vanessa shook her head.
"No."
Everyone went silent.
Damian stared.
"The records say Richard was R17."
"The records you found say that."
"What are you saying?"
Vanessa lifted her suitcase.
"I'm saying someone changed more than Gabriel's termination file."
She began walking toward the door.
Damian followed.
"Who was R17?"
Vanessa stopped.
"My father wouldn't tell me."
"Why not?"
"Because he said if I ever learned that name, I'd stop being useful and start being dangerous."
She left.
That evening, Marcus recovered the hard drive from the cake.
Most files were encrypted.
One was not.
It contained a scan of a document signed seventeen years earlier.
A trust agreement.
The R17 Trust.
The trustee was Richard Cross.
But the beneficial owner was hidden under a redacted line.
Marcus used metadata from an earlier draft to recover the deleted name.
Damian stared at the screen.
The beneficial owner was not Richard.
It was someone Damian believed had been dead for sixteen years.
May you like
His mother.
Evelyn Cross.
