Chapter 7 - The Girl Called Number 06

The woman led them away from the tunnel before explaining.

Her birth name was Elise Warren. At age nine, she became the sixth child taken by Black Pine. The original Mara Voss was a young investigative reporter who infiltrated the network and joined Thomas and Ruth's search team. When Vale discovered her identity, he killed her and forced Elise to assume her name as part of an early identity-replacement experiment.

"I was twelve," Elise said. "Old enough to remember who I had been, young enough for them to believe they could rewrite me."

Thomas and Ruth found her during the confrontation at the lodge. She wore Mara's clothes and carried Mara's documents. In the chaos, they believed she was the reporter. When the fire began, Elise stayed behind to free other children from a locked lower room. Thomas later found the real Mara's body and assumed Elise had also died.

"Why keep using her name?" Ruth asked.

"Because Elise Warren was declared dead in 1995. Mara Voss still had records I could use. And because every time Vale heard the name, he remembered the woman he failed to erase completely."

They reached an abandoned orchard at dusk. A collapsed farmhouse stood beyond rows of twisted apple trees. Elise had hidden supplies in the root cellar.

Daniel remained wary, but her story matched Claire's research. The identification tag carried Black Pine's old symbol and the number 06.

Noah placed his marker beside it. The black surface pulsed faintly.

A pattern of tiny lights appeared along the edge.

Elise leaned closer. "Claire embedded a reader. The marker recognizes original tags."

The lights formed six digits: 4 1 9 0 6 3.

Melissa wrote them down.

"Could be the inner code," she said.

"Or a trap," Daniel replied.

Ruth sat on an overturned crate, exhausted. "Thomas said midnight tomorrow at locker 317. We need to reach the hydroelectric station before Vale."

Elise shook her head. "Vale already controls it. The station was converted into a private data vault. Kreel's invitation is meant to place Noah in front of the archive scanner."

Daniel looked at his son. "Then we do not go."

"If we stay away, Thomas dies," Ruth said.

"Dad would not want Noah traded for him."

"No," Ruth agreed. "But he would expect us to find another way."

Elise unfolded detailed plans of the hydroelectric station. Water no longer passed through the original turbines. A private company used the upper building as a research warehouse. Beneath it, service tunnels reached the old locker hall.

There were three entrances: the main road, a flooded spillway, and a cable tunnel from a substation two miles west.

Melissa pointed to the cable tunnel. "We enter here and reach 317 before midnight. We copy the archive, expose Black Pine, and trade nothing."

"Vale will be expecting that," Daniel said.

"He expects you to be grieving and angry, not organized."

Daniel met her eyes. "He was right about the first two."

They needed outside help. Elise had one contact she trusted: Lena Ortiz, a federal prosecutor Claire had approached anonymously. Lena had refused to act without verifiable evidence but created a secure emergency channel.

The farmhouse contained an old shortwave radio connected to a directional antenna. Elise transmitted a coded phrase.

An answer came ten minutes later.

"Proof required," a woman said. "No extraction without proof."

Daniel took the microphone. "My wife was Claire Mercer. She was killed because she found your proof. My father is being held. My son is being hunted. Tell me what you need."

The voice paused.

"Locker 317 contains a ledger called Orchard. Retrieve any three complete identity chains and I can open a federal operation. Do not transmit through ordinary networks. Black Pine owns local law enforcement."

"Can you protect my family?"

"Not until I know where to send a team."

The radio crackled, and another voice cut into the frequency.

Elias Vale.

"Daniel," he said calmly, "your father would like to speak with you."

Thomas came on the line.

His breathing sounded shallow, and somewhere near him a machine clicked at regular intervals. Daniel tried to identify the room from echoes: concrete walls, perhaps metal stairs, water moving below. Thomas slipped emphasis into certain words, the same way he had once hidden instructions during family card games. Do not trust the woman calling herself Lena Ortiz. The warning might be literal, or it might mean that Vale was listening and Thomas needed Lena to understand he could not openly ask for help.

"Son, listen carefully. Do not trust the woman calling herself Lena Ortiz."

A gun clicked near the microphone.

"She was at Black Pine the night it began."
