Chapter 13 - The Daughter No One Remembered

Thomas said the baby called Number 07 had been placed with a trusted couple under a sealed adoption. For three years, he and Ruth received photographs. Then the family vanished after a house fire. The bodies were identified, but Black Pine controlled the coroner's office. Thomas never knew whether the child died or was taken again.
Her given name was Rebecca Lane.
"Why did Claire believe her mother was Number 07?" Daniel asked.
"Because we let her believe it," Thomas said. "Anna Bell was connected to the seventh record, but she was not the child. She was the nurse who carried Rebecca out of the lodge. Black Pine rewrote Anna's history to make her appear stolen. Claire followed the false chain."
"Then Noah may not be descended from any of the six."
"His marker activation proves he is connected to 07. We do not know how."
The Continuity Index countdown fell below fifty hours.
Lena launched a search for Rebecca Lane. Every record ended at the fire. Elise remembered a child at the lodge, but not a baby. Ruth searched old letters and found one from Rebecca's adoptive mother written days before the fire.
She is not alone in her blood. A brother exists, though they erased his birth.
Daniel returned to Claire's files. Hidden metadata showed repeated searches for Rebecca Lane and a man named Samuel Reed. Samuel had grown up in foster care, become an emergency physician, and died in the same hospital where Claire was born.
A DNA report connected Samuel to Claire's mother as a half-brother.
If Samuel was Rebecca's brother, then Anna Bell may have been Rebecca under another identity.
Black Pine had layered false records over false records until no single truth survived.
Elise studied the marker. "It does not recognize family stories. It recognizes genetic signatures. Noah belongs to 07, regardless of the names."
The federal laboratory confirmed that Noah shared distant maternal ancestry with DNA recovered from tag 07. Claire's mother had indeed been connected to the baby.
But one more discovery changed everything.
A second living match existed in the national database.
The name was sealed by court order.
Lena obtained an emergency warrant. The match belonged to Adrian Vale, twenty-eight years old, listed as the adopted son of Elias Vale.
Elias had raised a descendant of Number 07 inside Black Pine.
"Why?" Melissa asked.
Elise answered. "Insurance. If Noah never appeared, Adrian could open the index."
They located Adrian in a private rehabilitation facility owned by a Black Pine shell company. Federal agents raided the building and found empty rooms, burned records, and a message painted across the basement wall:
THE SEVENTH NAME CHOOSES THE FIRE.
Security footage showed Adrian leaving with Elias less than an hour before the raid. He did not appear restrained. He carried a silver case matching the dimensions of the Continuity Index backup unit.
The countdown reached thirty-six hours.
Kreel agreed to talk in exchange for protection. He claimed Vale had not escaped randomly. He was traveling to the first Black Pine site, an abandoned children's sanatorium on Mount Calder. Beneath it was a mirror archive capable of receiving the Continuity Index when the countdown ended.
"Vale wants Noah and Adrian together," Kreel said. "Two branches of 07. The system will ask them to vote."
"And Elise?" Daniel asked.
"Line 06 validates the transfer. Without her, the index burns automatically."
Elise became the most important hostage in the country.
Lena ordered her moved to an undisclosed military facility. Elise refused.
"Vale knows where we are going," she said. "The only place he cannot control is the place he believes we fear entering."
Mount Calder.
Daniel opposed taking Noah, but the marker's countdown changed after Adrian's identity was confirmed. A map appeared, directing them to the sanatorium.
Claire had programmed the final stage years ago.
At the bottom of the screen, another message appeared:
DANIEL, ASK YOUR SISTER WHY SHE VISITED CALDER BEFORE MY DEATH.
Melissa read it over his shoulder.

All color left her face.
Melissa sat down without finding a chair and landed against the wall. For years she had treated the missing hours before Claire's death as a sealed room in her mind. Now Claire's message had opened it from the inside. She remembered rain on the Calder road, a man watching from an upstairs window, and the envelope feeling strangely warm in her coat. Most of all she remembered lying to Daniel afterward, not once but every day she allowed him to believe there had been nothing he could have known.
