Chapter 12 - The Choice in the Dark

Emergency lights flickered red.

Daniel reached the upper platform and found Thomas alive, blood spreading across his side. Kreel was gone. Ruth pressed both hands against Thomas's wound while Melissa called for medical support.

Below, Lena's agents exchanged fire with Vale's guards. Elise pulled Noah behind the concrete base of the console.

Vale had vanished into the turbine shadows.

"What did you press?" Daniel asked Noah.

"Neither."

Noah showed him the glass strip Claire had hidden inside the marker. He had removed it before touching the screen.

"Mom said the lock was built for two. She didn't say the choice was."

Without the strip, the console had shut down rather than execute either command. The Continuity Index remained sealed.

Elise smiled despite the gunfire. "Claire built a third option. Delay."

Lena joined them. "How long?"

The marker display showed a countdown: 71:59:42.

Seventy-two hours.

A message appeared beneath it.

MOVE THE WITNESSES. FIND THE SEVENTH NAME.

"What seventh name?" Melissa asked.

Elise looked at her identification tag. Six children were taken in the original Black Pine operation. Yet Claire's note referred to a seventh.

Thomas, barely conscious, whispered, "There was another child."

Ruth bent closer.

"The records said six," Thomas continued. "But at the lodge, I saw seven beds. One was empty. Vale told us the seventh child had never existed."

A siren sounded. Federal teams breached the station's upper doors. Vale's remaining guards surrendered or fled through service tunnels.

Kreel was captured near the spillway with a broken arm. Elias Vale escaped.

Thomas was airlifted to a hospital under guard. Ruth went with him. Lena moved Daniel, Noah, Melissa, and Elise to a secure federal location outside the county.

By dawn, arrests had begun. News reports described a multistate identity fraud and trafficking investigation. Several officials resigned before warrants reached them. Two judges disappeared. A private jet connected to Black Pine crashed during takeoff, though no bodies were found.

Lena warned Daniel not to celebrate.

"The people in the partial archive are middle layers," she said. "Vale was telling the truth about that much. The Continuity Index may expose the structure above him."

"And if we burn it?"

"Victims remain hidden forever. Powerful people remain protected."

"If we open it?"

"We may reveal thousands of stolen identities, including people who do not know their lives were built on crimes. Families could collapse. Witnesses could be killed before we protect them."

Claire had given the choice to survivors, not prosecutors.

Daniel sat beside Noah in a small federal apartment. The boy had not slept. He held the marker halves and watched the countdown.

"Did Mom know this would happen?" he asked.

"She knew it might."

"Was she scared?"

Daniel remembered Claire checking the mirror, locking the door, and smiling at Noah as though fear could be defeated by refusing to pass it on.

"Yes," he said. "She did it scared."

Noah nodded. "Then we can too."

Melissa entered with a printed report. Investigators had examined the metal box from the campsite. Beneath its false bottom, they found a strip of microfilm containing a list of seven numbers.

01 through 07.

Numbers 01 through 06 had names beside them.

Number 07 was blank.

But a recent fingerprint had been found on the microfilm.

It belonged to Thomas Mercer.

When Thomas woke after surgery, Daniel confronted him.

His father admitted he had known more about Number 07 than he revealed. After the lodge fire, Thomas found a baby in an underground room. The infant wore tag 07. He and Ruth believed the child would be safer without any record connecting it to Black Pine.

"What did you do with the baby?" Daniel asked.

Thomas looked toward the hospital window.

"We raised her."

Daniel's breath caught.

"Melissa?"

May you like

Thomas shook his head.

"No."
