Chapter 11 - What Thomas Put in the Ground

Noah stared at the video.

"Grandpa gave me the marker?"

Thomas struggled against the ropes. "I can explain."

Kreel pressed a gun against his neck.

Vale addressed Daniel from across the turbine hall. "Claire trusted your son with the marker. Thomas stole it after her death, studied it, and planted it at the campsite to activate the archive. He needed Noah to open locker 317."

Daniel looked at his father. "Is that true?"

Thomas closed his eyes. "Yes."

Ruth stepped forward. "Why?"

"Because Claire's timer was running out. The marker was programmed to erase itself after the anniversary of her death. We had forty-eight hours left."

"You used Noah," Daniel said.

"I tried to keep him away from the station. The camp plan was supposed to separate the marker from him after activation. I did not know Claire tied the biometric lock to his presence."

Vale laughed softly. "Thomas always believes his betrayal becomes noble when he explains it slowly."

Lena's agents moved toward the stairs, but red targeting beams appeared on their chests. Vale had shooters hidden throughout the hall.

"Lower your weapons," Kreel ordered.

Lena complied first. The others followed.

Vale descended the catwalk steps. "The partial archive you copied contains criminals, corrupt officials, and disposable clients. Their arrests will satisfy the public. The Continuity Index, however, contains the true owners of Black Pine. People who do not purchase identities. People who purchase governments."

"Where is it?" Daniel asked.

Vale looked at Noah. "Inside the boy's marker. Claire removed it from the archive and divided the decryption across bloodlines 06 and 07. She believed descendants of the stolen children should decide whether to release it."

Elise stood beside Noah. "Then you cannot open it without us."

"Correct. Which is why I arranged this reunion."

Daniel understood. The package sent to Ruth, the campsite threat, the false deputies, the invitation to locker 317 - all designed to bring Elise and Noah together.

"You knew Elise was alive," he said.

"I never stopped looking."

Vale offered Daniel a choice. Open the Continuity Index, and Thomas would be released. Refuse, and Kreel would kill Thomas, then Melissa, then Ruth. Noah would be taken alive.

"And you?" Daniel asked. "What do you get after the index opens?"

"Freedom from people who believe they own me."

For the first time, Vale's confidence showed a crack. He was not the highest authority in Black Pine. He was another servant trying to steal the master's ledger.

Daniel glanced at Lena. She subtly touched the secure device in her pocket. The partial archive was still transmitting. Federal teams knew their location, but Vale's shooters could kill everyone before help entered.

Thomas shouted, "Do not open it!"

Kreel struck him.

Noah stepped away from Daniel.

"I will do it," he said.

Daniel grabbed his shoulder. "No."

"Mom wanted us to decide. Not him. Us."

Noah looked at Elise. She understood.

They approached the central console where Vale placed the two halves of the marker. Elise inserted her identification tag. Noah placed his hand on the scanner.

A prompt appeared: RELEASE CONTINUITY INDEX?

Two choices glowed beneath it.

OPEN

BURN

Vale had not known about the second option.

His face changed.

"Press open," he ordered.

Elise placed her finger above BURN.

Kreel aimed at Noah.

Thomas threw his weight backward, knocking Kreel against the railing. The gun fired. Thomas fell to the platform.

Ruth screamed.

Daniel charged up the stairs as chaos erupted. Lena's agents drew their weapons. Vale's shooters opened fire. Steam burst from a damaged pipe, filling the hall.

Noah pressed a button.

The console went black.

Every light in the station died.

The darkness was absolute, broken only by the dying glow of the marker. Sounds became directionless: Ruth calling Thomas's name, water striking metal, a guard shouting that the exits had failed. Daniel crawled toward Noah's last position and found the boy by touch. Noah's heart hammered beneath his palm. Somewhere nearby, Vale moved without stumbling, proof that he had rehearsed this room in darkness long before bringing them there.

In the darkness, Vale shouted one word.

"What did you choose?"
