Chapter 5 - The Deputy Who Knew Too Much

Deputy Rusk seemed to realize his mistake immediately.

He glanced at the other officers, then at the key. "Black Pine is what the kidnappers called themselves over the loudspeaker, correct?"

No one answered.

Ruth leaned heavily against Daniel, but her eyes sharpened. Melissa quietly moved behind Noah.

Rusk gestured toward the vehicles. "We need to get all of you to safety. There is an ambulance waiting at the south road."

Daniel looked at the sheriff insignia on the doors. The vehicles were older models, dusty but convincing. One officer wore a body camera. Another held a standard county radio. Yet neither had asked for names, injuries, or a description of the suspects.

"Which station sent you?" Daniel asked.

"Pine County Search and Rescue."

"This valley is in Alder County."

Rusk's smile disappeared.

Melissa pushed Noah behind a boulder as Daniel grabbed Ruth. The first shot shattered the lookout's lower window. The second hit the ground near Daniel's boot.

They ran along the ravine while Rusk shouted for his men to take them alive.

Ruth knew a narrow game trail hidden behind thorn brush. She had studied Thomas's escape routes for years. The trail climbed steeply, forcing them to use roots as handholds. Melissa nearly fainted from blood loss, but Noah supported her from below.

At the crest, they found Mara Voss waiting beside an old green utility truck.

"Get in," she said.

Daniel hesitated.

Bullets struck the rocks behind them.

Mara opened the passenger door. "You can distrust me while moving."

They climbed into the truck. Mara drove through a gap in the trees onto a road that was little more than two muddy ruts. The false deputies followed, but their larger vehicles struggled with the turns.

Mara drove as if she had memorized every stone. She cut across a dry streambed, passed beneath an abandoned rail trestle, and entered a tunnel hidden by vines. Inside, she switched off the headlights.

The pursuing engines passed overhead.

Only then did Ruth speak.

"You survived."

Mara kept both hands on the wheel. "So did you. Apparently neither of us managed it gracefully."

Ruth touched the scar on Mara's cheek.

"I searched for you," she whispered.

"For three months. Then Thomas decided I was dead."

"We saw the fire."

"You saw the fire Vale wanted you to see."

Mara drove deeper into the tunnel until they reached a steel door set into the rock. She unlocked it and led them into an abandoned maintenance chamber containing cots, medical supplies, radios, and shelves of canned food.

"This was a survey depot for the hydroelectric project," she explained. "Vale does not know I found it."

Daniel cleaned Melissa's wound again while Ruth told them how she had been taken. During the campsite removal, a driver received a false change of route. Thomas noticed too late. He pushed Ruth from the truck near a curve and ordered her to run. Kreel captured her. Thomas stayed aboard.

"He wanted them to believe he had the key," Ruth said. "He was buying time for you."

Daniel played the cassette for her. When Claire's name was mentioned, Ruth closed her eyes.

"Your father suspected," she said. "He found a report showing that Kreel's car passed the crash site twelve minutes before the emergency call. He could never prove more."

Mara sat across from Daniel. "Claire did."

She opened a metal cabinet and removed a laptop sealed in plastic. The desktop contained a video file dated two days before Claire's death.

Claire appeared on screen, sitting in her car.

"Daniel," she began, "if you are watching this, I failed to come home and someone finally believed the danger was real."

Noah moved closer to the screen.

Claire explained that Black Pine was no longer a child-trafficking network in the old sense. It had evolved into a private identity market. Wealthy clients used it to erase criminal histories, create heirs, replace witnesses, manipulate inheritances, and make inconvenient people disappear. Children were still moved, but adults were now the greater business.

She had found a ledger connecting judges, executives, doctors, police officers, and adoption agencies across several states.

"The ledger is stored behind locker 317," Claire said. "The black marker is not merely a key. It contains a biometric seed created from the original missing children. It can open the archive only when paired with a living descendant of one of them."

Daniel looked at Noah.

Claire continued.

"Noah is that descendant. My mother was one of the six children taken in 1995. I learned the truth after she died. Vale believes her bloodline ended with me. He does not know about the test I placed inside the marker."

Noah whispered, "What test?"

On screen, Claire leaned closer to the camera.

"The marker will identify every Black Pine access point it passes. If you found it at the campsite, then someone in our family moved it there. Daniel, one of the people helping you is working for Vale."

The video ended.

In the silence that followed, the steel door behind them locked with a heavy click.

Mara looked toward the control panel.

A red light began blinking.

May you like

Someone had sealed them inside.

Noah moved closer to Daniel and asked whether the walls were strong enough to keep bad people out. Daniel could not tell him that the same walls now kept air, choice, and escape away from them. Instead he said they had solved harder problems together. He reminded Noah of the flooded basement after Claire died, when they had carried boxes upstairs one at a time until sunrise. It was not the same, but the memory gave the boy something solid to hold.
