Chapter 10 - The Signature of a Father

Elise pulled emergency masks from the wall cabinet, but there were only three.
Daniel gave one to Noah, one to Ruth, and one to Elise. He wrapped his sleeve over his mouth and searched the locker for a ventilation control.
The copy process showed twelve percent.
"We cannot stay," Ruth said through the mask.
"We need three identity chains," Daniel replied.
"We need Noah alive."
Elise found a manual override behind the server rack. The lever would open a drainage gate beneath the locker, but using it would flood the room from the old turbine channel.
"Water will clear some gas," she said. "It may also destroy the paper records."
Daniel looked at the screen. Twenty-one percent.
Vale spoke again. "The signature is authentic, Daniel. Ask Ruth what Thomas traded to protect his family."
Ruth shook her head. "I know nothing about Claire."
"That is almost true," Vale said.
Daniel selected Claire's file and read the metadata. The authorization had been signed digitally six months before her death. Thomas's credential certificate was valid. But the time stamp placed him in a hospital recovering from heart surgery.
"Vale copied his identity," Daniel said. "That is what Black Pine does."
"Sometimes," Vale replied. "Sometimes frightened men make agreements."
The copy reached thirty-five percent. Daniel searched Thomas's records and found an identity chain labeled MERCER, THOMAS - SUBSTITUTE ACTIVE. The photograph showed a man with Thomas's face entering a bank in another state on the day the authorization was signed.
A surgically altered double.
Black Pine had used Thomas's identity to approve Claire's murder and poison the family against him if the archive opened.
"Dad did not sign it," Daniel said.
Ruth gripped his shoulder. "Then we finish this."
The gas thickened. Daniel's vision blurred.
Elise pulled the flood lever.
A gate opened beneath the floor. Freezing water exploded upward, knocking them against the lockers. Papers lifted from shelves and spun through the room. The gas vents sputtered.
The server copy climbed to fifty-eight percent.
Noah tied the encrypted drive cord around his wrist. "Mom made it waterproof."
The water rose to their waists.
At seventy percent, the archive doors unlocked automatically as emergency systems failed. Armed men waited in the corridor.
Ruth fired Thomas's revolver into a ceiling light. Darkness fell. Elise threw a metal evidence box toward the opposite wall. The guards fired at the sound.
Daniel lifted Noah and moved through the water toward the drainage gate. The opening was narrow but passable. Elise entered first. Ruth followed Noah. Daniel remained until the copy reached eighty-three percent.
"Leave it," Ruth shouted.
Three complete identity chains had already copied. That was enough for Lena.
Daniel tore the drive free. The server screen flashed a warning: PARTIAL ARCHIVE - CONTINUITY INDEX MISSING.
Then he dove through the gate.
They entered a concrete channel where black water rushed toward the old turbine chamber. Gunshots followed them. Daniel held Noah above the current while Elise guided Ruth around submerged machinery.
The channel ended at a rusted grate. Daniel used the brass key as a lever until one bar broke. They squeezed through and dropped into the turbine hall.
Melissa waited behind an abandoned generator with Lena Ortiz and two federal agents.
Lena took the drive. "Three chains?"
"Hundreds, partial."
She connected it to a secure device. Green confirmation lights appeared.
"Warrants are live," she said. "Teams are moving in six states."
For the first time, hope entered the room.
Then the main lights turned on.
Owen Kreel stood on the upper catwalk with Thomas bound beside him.
Elias Vale stood on the opposite side.
He was older than in the photograph, tall and white-haired, wearing a dark suit untouched by the rain or chaos.
"Congratulations," Vale said. "You have exposed the version of Black Pine I intended you to find."
Lena raised her weapon. "Federal agents. Release Thomas Mercer."
Vale smiled. "Agent Ortiz, check the fourth identity chain. The one Claire hid inside her own file."
Lena looked at the drive.
A file opened by itself.
It contained a live camera feed of Noah at the campsite that morning.

The image was silent but painfully clear. Thomas glanced over both shoulders before crouching near the cabin. He buried the marker beneath loose soil, then stood and watched Noah approach. For several seconds Thomas's face filled the frame. He looked ashamed before the plan had even begun. Daniel recognized that expression from the day Claire died, when Thomas arrived at the hospital already carrying a secret too heavy to confess.
Behind him, before the cabins disappeared, Thomas placed the black marker in the dirt for Noah to find.
