Chapter 9 - Blood Tests

The surgery lasted forty-three minutes.

Adrian remained conscious under local anesthesia because the object sat too close to a facial nerve. When the neurosurgeon lifted it free, everyone in the operating room saw the tiny blue light blinking at its center.

The device was no older than five years.

Whatever Ravenswood had done to Adrian as a child, someone had returned to him recently.

Detective Reyes placed the transmitter in a signal-blocking container. Federal agents arrived before noon. By evening, Bayview Medical Center was surrounded by reporters.

Elena and Lily were moved to a secure family wing under assumed names. Isabel occupied a guarded room two floors above. Mara was treated for a concussion, then placed in custody pending charges for kidnapping, unlawful surveillance, and assault.

Grant was hospitalized in the same building, chained to his bed.

Voss had disappeared during transport.

The police vehicle carrying him never reached county jail. It was found beneath an overpass, engine running, two officers unconscious from an aerosol sedative. The camera footage had been erased.

Ravenswood had survived again.

Adrian woke after surgery to find Elena seated beside his bed.

"You should be resting," he said.

"So should you."

Lily slept curled in a chair, clutching a stuffed rabbit a nurse had given her.

Elena held three envelopes. "The DNA results came back."

Adrian sat up carefully.

"Isabel is my biological mother," Elena said. "Mara and I share the same father."

Adrian frowned. "Different mothers, same father."

"Yes."

"And me?"

She handed him the final envelope.

Adrian read the report twice.

He was not Isabel's biological brother.

He was her father.

The room seemed to lose sound.

"That is impossible."

Elena's voice shook. "The lab repeated it."

"I am only twenty-nine years older than she is."

"You would have been thirteen."

Adrian dropped the paper.

Fragments moved beneath his thoughts: a locked ward, medication, a girl crying behind glass, adults telling him to be quiet, telling him he was helping.

Ravenswood's earliest experiments had not begun with adoption.

They had begun with children.

Adrian stood too quickly. The room tilted.

Elena caught his arm. "You do not have to remember all of it now."

"I do."

"No. That is what Voss wants."

The door opened.

Isabel entered under guard.

She looked at the report on the floor.

"So you know," she said.

Adrian stared at her. "You called me your brother."

"That was the role they gave us."

"Did you know I was your father?"

"Not until I found the records."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because you were thirteen. Because you were drugged. Because they used both of us. Because when I tried to tell you at the bus station, you looked at me like I was a stranger."

Adrian remembered the phone call, but not the meeting.

Isabel approached slowly. "You did not hurt me."

He stepped back.

"Do not absolve me because you need me to be innocent."

"I am not absolving you. I am telling you what happened. They harvested genetic material from several boys in the program. I was conceived in a laboratory. You never touched me. You did not know I existed until we were placed in the same home years later."

The horror changed shape but did not disappear.

Elena sat down. "Why would they make you believe you were siblings?"

"To study attachment," Isabel said. "To see whether blood recognized blood without memory."

Lily stirred in the chair.

All three adults fell silent.

Adrian picked up the report. "Mara shares Elena's father. Who was he?"

Isabel's face closed.

"Tell us," Elena said.

"Silas Voss."

The name settled like poison.

Mara and Elena were half-sisters.

Voss was their biological father.

"No," Elena whispered.

"He selected himself because he believed his genetics should continue the program."

Adrian looked toward the hallway. "Mara made a deal with him because he was her father."

"She hated him," Isabel said. "But hate can become another kind of chain."

Elena's phone vibrated.

Only police and hospital staff had the number.

A photograph appeared.

Grant stood beside Lily's empty chair.

But Grant was chained two floors away.

Elena looked up.

The chair beside them was empty.

The window was open.

Lily's stuffed rabbit lay on the floor.

A message followed.

THE WRONG MAN IS IN GRANT'S BED.
