Chapter 10 - The Man With Grant's Face

The patient chained in Grant's room wore Grant's face.

His fingerprints matched Grant's. His dental records matched. Even the scar on his shoulder matched the gunshot Mara had fired.

But when Elena entered under police guard, she knew immediately.

"That is not my husband."

The man smiled weakly. "Elena, don't do this."

Grant's voice. Grant's eyes. Grant's exact expression of wounded innocence.

She moved closer.

Real Grant had a faint line through his left eyebrow from a childhood accident. This man had it too. But Grant always smelled of cedar cologne, even in the hospital. This man smelled of antiseptic and peppermint.

Elena asked, "What did you call Lily before she was born?"

The man hesitated.

"Little star," he said.

Wrong.

Grant had called the baby an inconvenience.

Elena turned to Reyes. "Not him."

The man sat up against the restraints. "She's confused. She has trauma."

The same language. The same strategy.

Adrian entered carrying a portable ultrasound scanner. "The transmitter removed from me contains a manufacturer code used in subdermal prosthetics. Ravenswood may have altered his face, fingerprints, and dental structures."

Reyes stared at the prisoner. "Who are you?"

He closed his eyes.

Adrian scanned the tissue beneath his jaw. A mesh implant appeared on-screen.

The face was manufactured.

The man began to laugh.

"Grant Mercer is a title," he said. "Not a person."

Elena felt the room turn cold.

Over the next hour, federal agents uncovered pieces of the deception. The man in the bed was Owen Pike, a Ravenswood operative with extensive reconstructive surgery. He had taken Grant's place at least twice during Elena's marriage.

She remembered nights when Grant's touch felt unfamiliar. Arguments he later denied. A scar that vanished, then returned. She had blamed herself, believing fear had made her confused.

"How many were there?" she asked.

Pike smiled. "Enough."

"Where is Lily?"

"With the original."

"Where?"

"At home."

Police searched Elena's house again.

This time they found a door behind the basement furnace.

It opened into a narrow observation room with monitors showing years of footage from inside the Mercer home: bedroom, kitchen, nursery, bathroom. Elena's entire marriage had been recorded.

On one screen, the original Grant sat in a control chair speaking to a woman whose hand wore a blue ring.

The recording was dated two days before Elena's ER admission.

"Adrian will recognize her eventually," Grant said.

The woman answered, "He must recognize himself first."

Her face remained outside the camera frame.

Another video showed Lily being guided through the basement tunnel on the night of the abduction. The tunnel led beyond the property line to an abandoned storm drain.

Reyes followed the route and found a vehicle waiting area in the woods. Tire impressions matched a specialty ambulance owned by the Calder Foundation.

The ambulance had crossed the state line before dawn.

Elena watched the recordings until anger replaced shock.

"They built my life."

Adrian stood beside her. "They manipulated it. They did not create your love for Lily."

"They chose Grant. They watched him beat me. They sent different men into my bed."

Isabel looked away.

Elena saw it. "You knew about the replacements."

"I suspected."

"How long?"

"Since Lily was born."

Elena crossed the room and slapped her.

The sound echoed against the concrete walls.

Isabel did not defend herself.

"You do not get to call yourself my mother," Elena said. "Not because of what they did to you. Because of what you allowed them to do to me."

She walked out before Isabel could answer.

In the observation room, Adrian replayed the recording of the blue-ringed woman. Her voice disturbed him more than Voss's. It lived at the edge of his recovered memories.

He isolated the audio and slowed it.

Beneath the conversation, the woman hummed the same childhood song.

Isabel entered behind him, cheek red from Elena's hand.

"You know who she is," Adrian said.

Isabel stared at the screen.

"Her name was Dr. Evelyn Vale."

Adrian's adoptive mother.

The woman who had raised him.

The woman who had died eleven years ago.

"That is impossible," Adrian said.

Isabel shook her head.

"No, Adrian. The woman buried in your mother's grave was not Evelyn."

On-screen, the blue-ringed hand reached toward the camera and switched it off.

A final frame froze before darkness.

Reflected in the monitor glass was an older woman with Adrian's eyes.
