Chapter 12 - The First Daughter

The boat reached Orison Island at midnight.

Adrian stepped onto the dock alone.

Fog covered the water. A path of white lights led uphill toward the rehabilitation center. Its main building looked newly restored, all glass walls and pale stone, more like a retreat than a prison.

The front doors opened automatically.

Inside, the lobby held framed photographs of smiling families. At first Adrian thought they were advertisements. Then he recognized faces from Ravenswood files.

Children placed decades ago.

Adults now.

Judges, surgeons, executives, senators.

An entire generation built from stolen beginnings.

Evelyn Vale waited at the end of the hall.

She was eighty-one, thinner than Adrian remembered, but unmistakably alive. The blue ring gleamed on her hand.

"My son," she said.

"Do not call me that."

Pain crossed her face with convincing precision. Adrian no longer trusted expressions.

"Where is Lily?"

"Safe with Celeste."

"Who is Celeste?"

Evelyn turned toward a glass wall.

A woman stood on the other side holding Lily's hand.

She looked like Elena.

Not similar.

Identical, except for a faint scar across her chin and hair cut to her shoulders.

On the command boat, Elena saw the live feed through Adrian's concealed camera. She rose so fast her chair overturned.

Lily looked from the woman beside her to the camera mounted on Adrian's coat.

"Mommy?" she asked.

The identical woman knelt. "I'm not your mommy."

Then she looked directly toward Adrian.

"My name is Celeste Marrow."

Isabel began to sob behind Reyes.

"My baby."

Celeste's face hardened at the sound transmitted through the speaker. "You lost the right to say that."

Evelyn opened the glass door.

Lily ran to Adrian. He caught her and held her close.

"Where is Elena?" Celeste asked.

"Nearby."

"She should not come inside."

"Why?"

"Because this building was designed for her."

Celeste explained.

She had been Isabel's first daughter, born when Isabel was seventeen. Ravenswood declared the infant dead, but Voss kept her as the program's first natural child of a conditioned subject. When Elena was born years later, Voss used the sisters as comparative subjects: one raised inside, one outside.

Mara had been inserted later as a control, a child with Voss's genetics but a different mother.

"You were all experiments," Adrian said.

"We still are."

Celeste looked toward Evelyn.

Evelyn did not deny it.

"Why bring Lily?" Adrian asked.

"Because Evelyn needed Elena to come willingly."

Evelyn's voice remained calm. "I need the Marrow daughters together. Voss has destabilized the network. Files are being destroyed. People are killing one another to protect themselves. Only the original ledger can identify every subject and every collaborator."

"The ledger in my memory."

"Not exactly."

She touched Adrian's temple.

"You are not the vault. You are the map."

Adrian stepped away.

Celeste lifted a small projector. A pattern of lights appeared across the floor. Adrian recognized it from his nightmares: red, blue, white, then darkness.

His head filled with images.

A nursery beneath Ravenswood.

A woman with blood on her gown pressing a metal box into a wall.

Evelyn kneeling beside him.

"Remember the song," she had said. "The notes are the numbers."

The bad song was not a lullaby.

It was a code.

On the command boat, analysts recorded the melody. Coordinates emerged from the intervals.

Not Orison.

Bayview Medical Center.

The original ledger had been hidden beneath the hospital where Adrian now worked.

Evelyn smiled. "Now you understand."

Reyes gave the signal.

Tactical teams moved toward the island.

But Celeste shook her head. "Too late."

Explosions erupted along the shoreline.

The dock collapsed. Communication failed. Armed personnel poured from hidden doors, not attacking Evelyn, but surrounding her.

At their center walked Silas Voss.

His injured hand had been replaced by a black brace.

"You always were sentimental, Evelyn," he said.

Evelyn looked at Adrian. "Take Lily and run."

Voss raised a weapon.

Celeste stepped between him and Adrian.

Voss smiled at her with paternal pride.

"First daughter," he said.

Celeste smiled back.

Then she turned the weapon in her own hand toward Evelyn.

May you like

"I told you Elena should not come inside."

She fired.
