Chapter 8 - The Fire Door

Elena tore open the maintenance panel.
Inside were three rusted levers and a wheel valve. The labels had faded, but one pipe ran toward the ventilation system.
Voss stepped toward her.
Mara aimed the gun at him. "Stay back."
"You won't shoot," he said. "You still need the antidote."
Mara's eyes widened.
The gas was already affecting them. Adrian felt heat beneath his skin, followed by an unnatural surge of fear. The room seemed to narrow. Every breath became too loud.
Lily began to cough.
Isabel covered the child's face with her sleeve.
Adrian forced himself to study the pipes. "The red valve may reverse airflow."
"Or trigger the incinerator," Elena said.
Voss fitted the mask over his face.
That confirmed it.
Elena spun the red valve.
Nothing happened.
She pulled the first lever. A warning siren sounded. The floor beneath the surgical table split open, revealing a disposal chute.
The second lever released water from ceiling sprinklers.
The third stopped the fan.
Gas continued to drift, but slower.
Adrian grabbed the oxygen line attached to the surgical table and opened it fully. He divided the tubing, placing one end near Lily and the other under Elena's face.
Voss lunged for the valve.
Mara fired.
The bullet tore through his hand.
He dropped the mask.
Isabel kicked it toward Lily.
Elena seized it and pressed it over her daughter's face.
Outside the steel shutters, Reyes shouted through a narrow gap. "Get down!"
A shaped charge detonated.
The blast bent one shutter inward.
Fresh air rushed through the opening. Officers pulled Lily out first, then Isabel.
Voss crawled toward the disposal chute.
Mara caught his ankle.
"You do not get to disappear again."
He turned, blood running from his hand. "You think arrest matters? Ravenswood is not a building. It is an agreement."
Adrian grabbed his collar. "Then we will break the agreement."
Voss smiled through the pain. "You still do not remember who signed it."
The second charge opened the shutter.
Police flooded the room.
Voss was handcuffed, searched, and carried out. Mara surrendered her weapon. Elena expected Reyes to arrest her sister too, but the detective only removed the plastic restraints and replaced them with medical cuffs in front.
"We will sort out what you did after everyone is alive," Reyes said.
They found Grant upstairs, breathing through Adrian's improvised ventilator. He was transported under guard. Ravenswood's remaining staff attempted to escape through woodland tunnels, but police captured five. Two others vanished.
By sunrise, Elena sat in an ambulance with Lily asleep against her chest.
Isabel stood several feet away, wrapped in a blanket.
Neither knew how to cross the distance between them.
Adrian approached Elena with a sample kit. "The hospital can confirm the relationships."
She looked at Isabel. "I believe she is my mother."
"Believing is not the same as trusting."
Elena recognized his earlier words.
"Do you believe Voss?" she asked.
"About my childhood? Some of it."
"That means you may not be my uncle."
"Biology is the smallest part of what I owe you."
She studied him. "You don't owe me anything."
"I lost my sister. I failed to find you. I stood in an emergency room and almost treated you like another case because that is what doctors do when emotion is dangerous."
"You saved me."
"We saved each other."
Reyes joined them holding a recovered tablet. "We have a problem."
The files from the archive were encrypted. Most physical records had burned when a timed device ignited the basement shortly after the breach. The placement ledger Mara carried was only an index. Names had been replaced by codes.
Voss refused to speak.
Grant had regained movement but claimed amnesia.
And Lily said the woman who picked her up from school was not Mara or Isabel.
"She wore a blue ring," Lily said sleepily. "She told Daddy on the phone that the doctor would bring Mommy."
Adrian felt a memory flicker.
A blue ring.
A woman's hand.
A white room.
Then pain exploded behind his eyes.
He collapsed beside the ambulance.
In the hospital, imaging revealed a small metallic object embedded near the scar behind his ear.
Not an access port.
A transmitter.
While surgeons prepared to remove it, Reyes traced a signal broadcasting from the device.
It was not transmitting outward.
It was receiving.
At exactly eight in the morning, the device played a recorded message through Adrian's auditory nerve.
Only he could hear it.
A woman's voice whispered inside his skull.
"Adrian, do not let Isabel reach Elena."
Then the voice began to sing.
Badly.
May you like
Loudly.
The song Isabel had sung when they were children.
