Chapter 4 - The Second Daughter

Grant recovered first.

He swung the pistol toward Mara, but Elena slammed the metal bracelet against his wrist. The shot went into the ceiling. Adrian drove his shoulder into Grant's chest, and the two men crashed through an old examination cart.

Mara kicked the gun away.

Grant reached for the syringe.

Elena seized his arm. "What is that?"

He smiled through blood on his teeth. "Something your mother invented."

Adrian twisted Grant's wrist until the syringe fell. Mara pinned him with her knee and retrieved the pistol.

"Move," she ordered. "There are more of them coming."

"More of who?" Adrian asked.

"The people who kept Ravenswood alive."

An alarm began to pulse through the building.

Red lights flashed.

Mara led them through a service corridor while Grant shouted after them. "You can't run from the blood, Elena! Ask your uncle what his father did!"

Adrian stopped.

Mara grabbed his sleeve. "That is what he wants."

"My father died before Ravenswood opened."

"Then he lied to you too."

They descended a narrow staircase into the basement. Unlike the ruined floors above, the lower level had been maintained. White walls. New locks. Security cameras. A coded door marked ARCHIVE.

Mara entered six digits.

The door opened.

Rows of metal shelves held patient files, videotapes, blood samples, and sealed boxes labeled with dates stretching across three decades.

Elena stared. "How do you know the code?"

"Because I was raised here."

Mara's story came in fragments as she searched the shelves.

She had been born eighteen months before Elena, not to Isabel, but to another Ravenswood patient who died during labor. Isabel, then a student nurse, had discovered that the clinic was falsifying deaths and transferring babies into private placement networks. She tried to save Mara and expose the operation.

Instead, the clinic trapped her.

"When Isabel gave birth to you," Mara said, "they planned to take you too. She switched your bracelet with another infant and got you out through a sympathetic orderly. She made him promise to deliver you to Adrian."

Adrian felt sick. "No one brought me a baby."

"The orderly was killed before he reached you. A couple named Marrow found you in his car and raised you as their own. They told the clinic you died."

Elena pressed both palms against a shelf. "My father, Thomas?"

"Not your biological father. But from what I learned, he protected you."

"He died in a car accident."

"It wasn't an accident."

The archive door shuddered under a heavy impact.

Someone was trying to force it open.

Mara moved faster. She found a box marked I. MARROW and pulled out a stack of files.

Adrian opened the first folder. Inside were photographs of Isabel at different ages, medical evaluations, and behavioral reports.

SUBJECT REMAINS NONCOMPLIANT.

MATERNAL ATTACHMENT INTERFERES WITH CONDITIONING.

USE DAUGHTER TWO AS LEVERAGE.

Elena read over his shoulder. "Daughter two."

"You," Mara said. "I was daughter one."

"Why didn't you tell me before tonight?"

"I didn't know where you were until Grant brought you to Bayview three months ago after he broke your wrist. Your bloodwork triggered an old marker in the hospital database."

Adrian looked up sharply. "You accessed her records."

"I set the alert. Years ago."

"Then you knew who I was too."

"I suspected. But Ravenswood had people inside the police, courts, hospitals. I couldn't approach you without exposing Elena."

"You let her go home with him."

Mara flinched. "I helped build evidence. I thought I had time."

Elena's voice turned cold. "You watched him hurt me."

"I watched because every time I tried to move, they threatened Lily."

The pounding stopped.

Silence settled outside the archive.

Then Isabel's voice came through the intercom.

"Mara, open the door."

Mara went rigid.

Elena stepped toward the speaker. "Mom?"

"Elena," Isabel said, and the single word carried twenty-seven years of grief. "I need you to listen. Grant is not the one in control. He never was."

Adrian approached the door. "Isabel, are you alone?"

"No."

A man's voice followed hers, calm and unfamiliar.

"Doctor Vale, open the archive and bring me the original Marrow files. In exchange, the child lives."

A small screen beside the door activated.

Lily sat awake now, crying silently. A thin man in a dark suit stood behind her with one hand on her shoulder.

Mara whispered, "Director Voss."

Adrian recognized the name from the old clinic board.

Dr. Silas Voss had supposedly died in the Ravenswood fire.

Voss smiled into the camera.

"Your family has been unusually difficult to erase."

A timer appeared beneath Lily's image.

TEN MINUTES.

Mara raised her gun toward the lock.

Adrian stopped her. "If we open that door, he gets the files."

"If we don't, Lily dies."

Elena took the folder from Adrian's hands and began turning pages rapidly. Near the back she found a sealed envelope in Isabel's handwriting.

FOR ADRIAN ONLY.

She tore it open.

Inside was a photograph of Adrian as a young medical student standing beside Isabel.

On the back, Isabel had written one sentence.

ADRIAN, IF YOU ARE READING THIS, DO NOT BELIEVE MARA.
