Chapter 7 - The Doctor's Missing Years

Adrian laughed once.

It was not amusement. It was the sound a mind made when the world ceased to fit.

"That is nonsense."

Voss turned a page.

School records. Blood tests. Photographs of Adrian at ages five, seven, and ten. In each, a small numeric code appeared in the corner.

A-01.

"Your earliest memory is what?" Voss asked.

Adrian did not answer.

"A yellow kitchen," Voss continued. "Your mother baking bread. Your father reading a newspaper."

Adrian's mouth went dry.

"Those details came from the script we gave you."

"No."

"Your legal parents lost their biological son in an accident. Ravenswood provided a replacement."

Elena looked at him. "Replacement?"

Voss's smile remained calm. "Adrian was born to one of our earliest subjects. The Vales accepted him, raised him, and never told him. Later, when his memory began to return, we corrected it."

Isabel's face twisted with disgust. "You drugged a child."

"We preserved a family."

Adrian reached for the binder, but a guard raised his weapon.

Voss flipped to another page. "You had a younger biological sister. Isabel."

Adrian stared at her.

Isabel was crying now.

"We are not siblings by adoption," she said. "We were born here."

The memories Adrian had trusted all his life began to fracture. His father's avoidance whenever Ravenswood appeared in the news. His mother's panic when he asked why no baby photographs existed before age four. The recurring nightmare of a white room and a woman singing badly in the dark.

"You knew," he said to Isabel.

"Not when we were children. I found our files while working here."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"I tried. The night I disappeared, I called you."

Voss closed the binder. "And then she made a selfish choice. She came back for the records instead of leaving with you."

"I came back for the children," Isabel said.

"Always the martyr."

Elena held Lily tighter. "What do you want from Adrian?"

"His memory."

Voss explained as if delivering a lecture.

Before Ravenswood burned, a master ledger had been hidden by Adrian's biological mother. It contained names of children placed with powerful families, payments, medical experiments, and the identities of collaborators. Voss believed Adrian had seen where she hid it. The memory had been suppressed through drugs and conditioning.

"Why not ask him?" Elena said.

"We have. Many times."

Adrian felt cold. "I have never met you."

Voss nodded toward a scar behind Adrian's right ear. "That is where we placed the access port during your residency."

Adrian touched the faint line.

He had been told it came from a bicycle accident.

The guards moved closer.

Voss gestured toward the surgical table. "The protocol requires a trigger. A blood relative under acute stress. Elena's arrival completes the conditions."

Mara stepped forward despite her restraints. "You promised to release them."

"I promised an opportunity for release."

"You said Lily would be safe."

"She is safe."

Mara charged him.

A guard struck her with the butt of his weapon. She fell.

Elena screamed.

Lily buried her face against Elena's shoulder.

Adrian looked at Voss. "You need me conscious."

"Correct."

"And Elena alive."

"Preferably."

Adrian took one step toward the table. "Then let Lily and the others leave."

Voss considered him. "You still think you can bargain."

"I think you have spent twenty-seven years chasing something inside my head. That makes me the only person in this room you cannot replace."

For the first time, Voss's expression shifted.

Adrian pressed the advantage. "Release Lily to Detective Reyes outside. Then I cooperate."

"There are no police outside."

Adrian held up his phone.

The call to Reyes had never ended.

Voss's eyes narrowed.

From above came a muffled explosion.

The tactical team had breached the chapel.

Gunfire erupted in the corridor.

One guard turned toward the door. Elena threw the old metal instrument tray into his face. Adrian drove his elbow into the second guard's throat. Isabel pulled Lily behind the surgical table.

Mara kicked Voss's knee and took his weapon.

Reyes burst through the side entrance with two officers.

"Police! Down!"

Voss did not surrender.

He slammed his palm against a control panel.

Steel shutters dropped between the operating room and the doorway, trapping Voss, Adrian, Elena, Isabel, Mara, and Lily inside while Reyes remained on the other side.

A ventilation fan roared overhead.

Gas began to pour into the room.

Voss lifted an oxygen mask from beneath the table.

"There is only one mask," he said.

Adrian saw the choice immediately.

The gas was designed to make them turn on one another.

Elena saw something else.

A maintenance panel beside the floor bore a faded label.

INCINERATION PURGE.

She handed Lily to Isabel.

Then she ran straight toward the gas.
