Chapter 6 - Operating Room Three

Mara ordered Elena to drop her weapon.
Elena did not.
For several seconds, neither sister moved.
Adrian remained kneeling beside Grant, one hand maintaining the man's airway. "Mara, think carefully about what you are doing."
"I have thought about nothing else for twenty years."
"You brought us here."
"I brought Elena to the only place where Voss could not ignore her."
Elena tightened her grip. "Where is my daughter?"
"Operating Room Three."
"With Voss?"
"With Isabel."
The answer struck harder than a lie.
Elena remembered the woman on the monitor, the warning finger raised to her lips. Do not trust him. She had assumed Isabel meant Grant. Perhaps she had meant Adrian. Perhaps Mara. Perhaps everyone.
"What does Voss want from me?" Elena asked.
"Your blood."
Adrian looked down at the binder labeled VALE PROTOCOL.
Mara continued. "Ravenswood was never only an adoption network. Voss studied trauma, memory, and compliance. He believed extreme fear could alter biological markers passed from mother to child. Isabel discovered that certain women in the Marrow line carried a rare resistance to the drugs he used."
"That sounds impossible," Adrian said.
"It sounded impossible in 1998. It does not sound impossible after the work Voss funded in private laboratories."
Elena stared at the bruises on her arms. "Grant hurt me for an experiment."
"At first, he married you because Voss ordered him to observe you. Later, he hurt you because he enjoyed it."
Grant's eyes closed. Adrian adjusted his jaw and kept him breathing despite every part of himself wanting to let go.
"Why would Isabel cooperate?" Elena asked.
"To keep us alive."
Mara's gun trembled.
The first real crack appeared in her composure.
"Voss told her he would kill one daughter if she refused to work. Then he told her he would kill both if she tried to escape. She spent years sabotaging him from inside. She hid records, changed samples, and created the alert that helped me find you."
"Then why did she write not to trust you?"
"Because I made a deal with Voss."
Elena's stomach dropped.
"What deal?"
"I promised to bring you back if he released Lily and Isabel."
"You traded me."
"I traded one adult who could fight for two prisoners who could not."
Adrian stood slowly. "And what makes you think he will honor it?"
"He already released Lily from the lower cells."
"Where is she?"
Mara's silence gave the answer.
She did not know.
A low bell sounded through the nursery.
Somewhere beneath them, machinery activated.
Mara glanced toward the door. Adrian moved.
He knocked her gun hand upward. Elena lunged, striking Mara's wrist with both hands. The gun fired into the wall.
Grant rolled onto his side, choking.
Mara fought with desperate strength, but Elena had survived years of learning how to break a grip. She twisted free, seized the gun, and aimed it at her sister's chest.
Mara stopped.
"You should shoot me," she said. "But you will need me to find Lily."
Elena hated that she was right.
They bound Mara's wrists with plastic restraints from an emergency cabinet. Adrian intubated Grant using old equipment while Elena watched the door.
"Why save him?" she asked.
"Because dying would let him escape what he did."
Grant's eyes opened. He could not move, but he could hear.
Adrian leaned close. "You will live long enough to testify."
They left him connected to a portable ventilator and descended toward the chapel.
Ravenswood's chapel had no religious symbols left, only rows of dusty benches and a cracked stained-glass window. Beneath the altar, Mara revealed an elevator.
The key turned.
The elevator dropped.
Elena heard a child crying before the doors opened.
"Lily!"
She ran into Operating Room Three.
Her daughter sat on the floor beside a surgical table, unharmed but terrified. Elena fell to her knees and pulled her close.
"Mommy," Lily sobbed. "Grandma said you would come."
Elena looked up.
Isabel stood behind the table.
Alive.
Close enough to touch.
For a moment, neither woman moved. Then Isabel covered her mouth with both hands.
"My baby."
Elena rose slowly, still holding Lily.
"You let them take her."
"I kept her alive."
"You let Grant hurt me."
"I tried to stop him."
"For twenty-seven years?"
Isabel took one step forward. "Every choice I made was to bring you to this room alive."
A door sealed behind them.
Dr. Silas Voss entered from an observation booth. He was older than the photographs, but his posture remained elegant, almost gentle.
"At last," he said.
Two armed guards followed him.
Voss looked at Elena with the satisfaction of a collector receiving a lost masterpiece.
"The second Marrow daughter returns."
Adrian moved in front of Elena and Lily. "This ends tonight."
Voss smiled. "No, Adrian. Tonight is where your part finally begins."
He opened the VALE PROTOCOL binder.
On the first page was a childhood photograph of Adrian.
