Chapter 8 - Claire Went Alone, but She Was Not Unprotected

The meeting place was an abandoned railway station outside Bellhaven.

Claire told Mara she would not go. Then she spent two hours constructing the safest way to disobey her own statement.

She wore a transmitter beneath her collarbone, carried a tracker in her shoe, and arranged three surveillance teams beyond visible range. Nolan, still recovering, mapped every exit. Vanessa provided a list of vehicles associated with Orison Continuity.

Elias begged Claire not to risk herself.

"For twenty-eight years, other people decided what I was allowed to know," she said. "That ends tonight."

The station clock had stopped at 2:17. Rain leaked through the glass roof. Claire stood beneath the departure board until a man emerged from the shadows.

He was tall, perhaps thirty-eight, with dark hair and the same gray-green eyes Helena had given Claire. A scar crossed his throat. He held no visible weapon.

"Claire," he said.

Her body recognized something her mind refused to accept.

"Gabriel?"

"The name they gave me was Julian Cross. Gabriel is the name people use when they want something from me."

He placed a sealed envelope on a bench. Inside was a certified DNA report. Claire did not touch it.

"Reports can be forged."

"Then take your own sample."

He pulled a sterile swab from his pocket, used it, and set it beside the envelope.

"Why now?" Claire asked.

"Because Adrian forced the network into the open. Because Elias is losing control. Because you finally stopped behaving like the obedient daughter."

Claire's hand curled. "You know nothing about me."

"I know you spent six months looking for me and stopped after one threat."

The accusation cut exactly where he intended.

"They threatened my father."

"They threatened mine too. The difference is that I never had one to protect."

Julian described growing up in institutions funded by Orison. He was moved whenever he formed attachments. Tutors trained him in languages, finance, surveillance, and negotiation. He was told he belonged to a "continuity project" designed to preserve dynastic assets if public heirs failed.

At sixteen, he escaped. At nineteen, Aster found him. Since then, he had lived between resistance and cooperation, gathering evidence while performing tasks to stay alive.

"Did you work with Adrian?" Claire asked.

"I used him. He wanted to be me. He believed the Laurent fortune would heal whatever was missing inside him."

"Where is he?"

"With Moreau. They are trying to access the original trust archive."

"Why?"

"Because the founder certificate you found is not the first one."

Julian looked toward the station clock.

"The original does not divide control between children. It gives control to whichever heir can produce the founder's cipher. Adrian thinks the cipher is hidden in your mother's letters."

Claire thought of the boxes in Helena's library.

"He will go to the estate."

"He already has someone inside."

The transmitter beneath Claire's collarbone clicked twice: Mara's signal that movement had been detected.

Julian heard it.

"You did not come alone."

"Neither did you."

A shot shattered the station window.

Julian pulled Claire behind a stone column. Tactical teams moved in as gunfire echoed from the platform. A gray vehicle crashed through a service gate. Two masked men fired toward Julian, not Claire.

He pushed the DNA envelope into her hand. "Ask Elias about the Black Ledger."

"Come with me."

"Your people will arrest me."

"Maybe they should."

He smiled sadly. "You really are my sister."

Then he disappeared through a maintenance tunnel.

One attacker was captured. The other died from a self-administered poison before questioning. The prisoner carried an Orison token and a photograph of Helena's library.

Claire called Elias.

No answer.

Security at the estate reported a power failure. When Mara's team arrived, Helena's library had been burned. Elias was missing.

On the scorched desk, Adrian had left a message carved into the wood.
