Chapter 4 - The Dead Man Had the Wrong Scar

The body from the townhouse was burned beyond visual identification.

By dawn, news stations were reporting that suspended CEO Adrian Vale had died in an apparent gas explosion while fleeing a corporate investigation. Reporters gathered outside Laurent-Vail headquarters. Employees posted videos from the ballroom. The shove, the chairman's declaration, and the blackout spread across the internet before the legal team could contain them.

Claire watched the footage without sound.

Each replay ended with her on the floor.

The public saw humiliation followed by revenge. They did not see the years of doubt that had led to that moment. They did not know that she had once defended Adrian to every person who warned her. They did not know she still felt the phantom weight of his hand on her shoulder.

Mara entered the secure apartment with two cups of coffee. "The medical examiner found surgical hardware in the body. Adrian never had spinal surgery."

Claire looked up. "So the dead man is not Adrian."

"No. He wanted us to think he was dead."

"Who was the victim?"

"A security consultant named Peter Lang. He disappeared yesterday afternoon."

Claire closed her eyes. Peter had managed event access for the gala. He had a wife and a teenage son.

"Adrian killed him."

"We cannot prove that yet."

"He used Peter's body as a door. He always uses people as doors."

Elias joined them, still dressed in the suit from the gala. He placed a small evidence bag on the table. Inside was a metal token recovered from the townhouse debris. It bore a six-pointed flower.

Claire recognized it from her mother's deposit box.

"Aster House," she said.

Elias nodded. "The same mark was stamped on the adoption ledger."

Mara received a call and stepped away. Claire studied her father.

"Did you ever believe Adrian might be Gabriel?"

Elias sat heavily. "For one week, years ago. Before your wedding. The background report showed his mother's connection to Aster. I ordered a discreet DNA comparison using a glass from a company dinner. The result excluded him."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I feared you would think I was trying to destroy your happiness."

Claire almost replied that he had been right. Instead she asked, "Can the result be trusted?"

"I no longer trust anything connected to Aster."

Mara returned. "Vanessa wants to speak to Claire alone."

"No," Elias said immediately.

"She says she knows where Adrian will go next."

Claire agreed before her father could object.

Vanessa was held in an interview room at a federal office. Without makeup and diamonds, she looked younger and more frightened. A bruise circled her wrist where Adrian had grabbed her onstage.

Claire sat across from her.

"You laughed when he pushed me," Claire said.

Vanessa swallowed. "I know."

"You told employees I was unstable. You sent photographs of yourself in my house. You helped him isolate me."

"I know."

"Then do not begin with an apology. Begin with something useful."

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears she seemed determined not to release. "Adrian never loved me. He recruited me."

She described a private dinner two years earlier. Adrian told her Claire was a spoiled heiress who controlled his career and abused him emotionally. He promised Vanessa power if she helped prove Claire was unfit to manage the trust. At first, Vanessa believed him. Later, when she tried to leave, he showed her evidence of financial crimes committed through accounts in her name.

"Were they your crimes?" Claire asked.

"Some signatures are mine. I thought I was approving campaign expenses. Others were forged."

"Why humiliate me at the gala?"

"He said the board needed to see you lose control. He wanted you to attack me. When you didn't, he pushed you himself."

Claire leaned forward. "Where will he go?"

Vanessa whispered, "Saint Orison's Hospital."

The name meant nothing to Claire.

"It closed twenty years ago," Vanessa continued. "Adrian has a key in his private safe. He visits every year on October seventeenth. He comes back angry and covered in dust. Once I followed him. There is a tunnel beneath the east wing."

"What is in it?"

"Rooms with children's names on the doors."

Claire felt cold.

Vanessa reached across the table, then stopped before touching her. "One of the doors had your name."

That night, investigators raided Saint Orison's.

The hospital stood abandoned at the edge of a forest, windows boarded, chapel roof collapsed. Beneath the east wing they found a tunnel exactly where Vanessa described.

At the end were six rooms.

The first door read CLAIRE L.

The second read GABRIEL L.

The third read ADRIAN V.

And behind the fourth door, someone was still alive.
