Chapter 15 - The Child in the Last Photograph Was Watching Claire

Claire reached Evelyn's recovery residence before dawn.

Evelyn sat beside the window with a blanket around her shoulders. On the table lay an old photograph Claire had never seen.

It showed Evelyn at twenty-six, standing outside Aster House with two infants in a carriage.

One child wore the bracelet later associated with Adrian.

The other wore no bracelet at all.

"I remembered when Rosa testified," Evelyn said. "She described the alarm on the night I ran. There were two babies in the laundry transport room. I took both."

Claire sat slowly.

"What happened to the second child?"

"A man stopped me at the train station. He said he was sent by Helena. He knew the safe phrase she had given sympathetic nurses. I believed him. I gave him the baby while I escaped with Adrian."

"Who was the man?"

Evelyn turned the photograph over. A blurred figure stood at the edge of the frame.

Claire recognized the posture before the face.

Nolan Price.

Nolan had been nineteen at the time, years before he officially joined Laurent security.

Claire called Mara, but Nolan's phone was disconnected. His apartment was empty. At the airfield, a small plane registered to a restoration contractor had departed two hours earlier.

Its destination was listed as Vienna.

The private school connected to C-0 records was in Austria.

Claire and Julian met at headquarters. Their relationship remained cautious, built from evidence rather than instant affection. Julian studied the photograph.

"The second child could be anyone," he said.

"Rosa said C-0 was an orphan selected before we were born. Evelyn says another infant left Aster the night you disappeared. The codes may refer to roles, not one person."

Mara joined them with a decrypted file recovered from Nolan's abandoned laptop. It contained payments from a company called Northstar Education and a list of children monitored across decades.

Claire's name appeared first.

Julian's appeared second.

Adrian's appeared third.

The fourth entry was blank except for a current status.

ACTIVE INSIDE HELENA PROJECT.

Claire's new organization employed forty-two people, many of them survivors or investigators with complicated histories. Any one of them could be the second child. Any one could have been placed near her deliberately.

A security alert interrupted them.

Someone had accessed the distributed Orison archive using a sixth key.

Only five keys were supposed to exist.

The intruder did not steal money or erase records. They opened a sealed folder labeled FIRST FAMILY and downloaded one video.

Mara projected the access trail. It originated from inside the Helena Project's office on the floor below.

Claire, Julian, and security rushed downstairs.

The office was empty except for a young caseworker named Anna Reed, who stood before a wall of recovered family photographs. Claire knew her as quiet, meticulous, and unusually skilled at tracing altered birth records.

Anna turned when they entered.

"The system told me you would come," she said.

Julian moved in front of Claire.

Anna raised empty hands. "I am not your enemy."

"You used an unauthorized key," Mara said.

"It was mine before you divided the archive."

Claire studied her face. Anna was thirty-one, too young to be the infant Evelyn remembered unless the photograph's date was wrong. But Aster specialized in wrong dates.

"Who are you?" Claire asked.

Anna looked toward the oldest photograph on the wall: Helena holding newborn Claire and Gabriel.

"I was raised as Anne Cross," she said.

Julian went still.

"Cross was the surname they gave me," he said.

"Yes. We were raised in different facilities under the same program. You were taught to escape. I was taught to return."

She handed Claire a small drive containing the downloaded video.

"Nolan asked me to open it if the Laurent trust ever surrendered control. He said that would prove you were ready."

"Ready for what?"

"To learn why Helena created the Helena Project twenty-nine years before you did."

Claire inserted the drive into an isolated computer.

The video showed Helena in a laboratory, younger than Claire had ever seen her. Beside her stood Rosa, Nolan, and Dr. Moreau. Behind glass were three bassinets.

Helena looked directly into the camera.

"Elias believes Aster took our son," she said. "He does not know they were trying to prevent something worse. If this recording is opened, then the first family has returned, and Claire must not trust the blood tests."

The camera shifted toward the bassinets.

One held Claire.

One held Gabriel.

The third held a baby labeled ELIAS L.

Claire froze.

Her father had been an adult when she was born. The label made no sense.

Then Helena continued.

"The man Claire knows as Elias Laurent is not the founder's biological son. He was the first replacement."

The video ended.

No one spoke.

Claire called Elias.

A woman answered his phone.

"Claire," Rosa said quietly, though Rosa was supposed to be in federal custody. "Do not go to your father. The man with him has been waiting longer than any of us."

Behind Rosa's voice, Claire heard Elias shouting.

Then another man came onto the line.

His voice was almost identical to Elias's.

"Hello, Claire," he said. "I believe you have been running my company."

The call disconnected.

On the office wall, every recovered family photograph flickered as the digital display system was remotely accessed.

One by one, the faces of Elias Laurent were replaced by photographs of another man at different ages.

A man who had lived in shadows while Claire's father built an empire under his name.

The final screen displayed a live image from the abandoned Laurent estate.

Elias knelt in Helena's burned library.

Rosa stood behind him.

And beside them was the stranger with Elias's face, holding the original founder's seal.

A message appeared beneath the image.

THE TRUE FOUNDER'S SON HAS COME HOME.

Claire reached for her coat.

Julian caught her arm. "This is a trap."

She looked at the screen, at the father who had lied, loved, failed, and tried to repair what he could. She looked at Anna, whose identity opened another branch of the nightmare. She looked at Mara, already calling authorities who might still contain people loyal to Orison.

Then Claire removed Julian's hand.

"Of course it is a trap," she said. "This family has never built anything else."

Outside, dawn broke over the city.

At the estate, the stranger raised the founder's seal toward the camera as if inviting Claire to claim it.

She did not know whether she was going to rescue Elias, confront the man whose life he had inherited, or discover that the family tree itself had been manufactured.

She knew only one thing.

The night Adrian shoved her from the stage had not been the end of her humiliation.

It had been the moment someone decided she was finally dangerous enough to be told the truth.
