Chapter 7 - The Board Meeting Had Already Been Turned Into a Trap

The recording labeled BOARD MASSACRE contained no video, only thirty seconds of mechanical noise and a church bell.
Federal technicians identified the sound as an elevator motor used in Laurent-Vail's original headquarters, a stone tower built around a converted monastery. The board was scheduled to meet there the next morning because the current headquarters remained a crime scene.
Claire canceled the meeting publicly and moved it to a virtual session.
Privately, she went to the tower with Mara, Samuel, and a tactical team.
The old boardroom occupied the top floor. Dust covered the carved table. Portraits of founders watched from dark walls. Investigators found no explosives, no weapons, and no sign of Adrian.
Then Claire heard the church bell.
It came from below.
A concealed elevator behind the founder's portrait descended into a sub-basement not shown on modern plans. The chamber beneath contained rows of filing cabinets, an analog recording system, and a table set for eight people.
Place cards named each board member.
At Claire's place sat a small wooden box.
Inside was a syringe and a typed confession in which Claire admitted ordering Adrian's murder.
"He wanted us found here," Mara said. "If we had held the meeting as planned, someone would have drugged or killed the board and framed you."
Samuel examined the place cards. "Someone prepared this recently."
A tactical officer called from the corridor. They had found Nolan Price.
He was chained inside a storage room, dehydrated and bleeding from a head wound.
At the hospital, Nolan claimed Adrian had abducted him after forcing him to provide access. The photographs in his desk, he said, had been part of a security archive ordered by Helena to monitor threats against Claire.
"Why hide them?" Claire asked.
"Because Helena believed someone inside the family was reporting to Aster. She told me never to place the surveillance on official systems."
"You drove Adrian from the gala."
Nolan's eyes filled with shame. "He had my daughter."
His daughter, Sophie, was a medical student in Edinburgh. Adrian sent Nolan a live video showing her bound in a room. Nolan obeyed, then was struck from behind at the airfield. Sophie had since been found safe in a rented apartment, sedated but unharmed.
"Did Adrian leave by plane?" Mara asked.
"No. A refrigeration truck collected him. The logo said North Coast Biologics."
The company was one of Vanessa's campaign clients. Its trucks transported laboratory materials across borders.
Claire turned to Vanessa, who sat under guard near the door. "Did you know?"
"No. But I know the account manager."
The manager led investigators to a warehouse near the coast. The truck was there, empty except for a smear of blood and an Aster token. Security footage showed Adrian changing vehicles with a gray-haired man.
Evelyn identified the man as Dr. Luc Moreau.
The geneticist Claire believed had disappeared in Geneva was alive.
Moreau had been working with Adrian.
The DNA laboratories delivered their results that afternoon.
All three agreed: Adrian was not Claire's twin.
He shared no close biological relationship with Elias or Claire.
Evelyn wept when told. "Then whose child did I steal?"
Mara asked whether another infant had been at Aster that night.
Evelyn described a wealthy American family whose newborn son had a heart defect. The parents paid Aster for a healthy replacement. The sick child vanished from the records.
"Adrian may have been that replacement," Mara said. "A child stolen for one family and stolen again by Evelyn."
Claire expected relief. Instead she felt a deeper horror. Adrian's pain had begun with a crime committed against him, but he had chosen to make victims of everyone around him.
A past could explain cruelty. It could not excuse it.
That evening, Claire addressed the board virtually. She disclosed the attempted trap and the verified DNA result. She asked for authority to restructure the company permanently.
Samuel challenged her. "You have never run an organization of this scale."
"Neither had Adrian when we made him CEO. We mistook aggression for leadership. I will not ask you to repeat that mistake with me. I am proposing a distributed executive council, independent ethics authority, and employee representation on the board."
The proposal shocked them more than a demand for the CEO title would have.
After hours of debate, the board approved the first phase.
Claire returned to the secure apartment after midnight. A package waited inside her locked bedroom.
Security had no record of delivery.
The package contained a child's red bracelet marked G.L.
And a fresh photograph of a man standing outside the building.
He had Claire's eyes.
On the back, someone had written:
May you like
YOUR BROTHER WOULD LIKE TO MEET YOU.
COME ALONE.
