Chapter 10 - Vanessa's Betrayal Was Not What Adrian Expected

Vanessa held the brass cylinder between two fingers.
Claire felt the betrayal before she understood it. Vanessa had insisted on checking Claire's transmitter before the exchange. She must have taken the cylinder then.
Adrian laughed softly. "You see, Claire? Everyone chooses survival."
Vanessa walked toward him.
Elias strained against his restraints. "Don't give it to him."
Adrian extended his hand.
Vanessa stopped just beyond reach.
"You promised to erase the accounts in my name," she said.
"I will."
"You promised Peter Lang would not be hurt."
Adrian's expression changed.
"He saw too much."
"You burned him alive."
"Do not become sentimental now."
Vanessa looked back at Claire. "I spent two years becoming whatever he needed because I thought power would protect me. It only made me useful to him."
She dropped the cylinder.
It struck the concrete and split open.
The interior was empty.
Adrian stared.
Claire opened her handbag and removed the true cipher. "The one Vanessa took was a replica."
At the same moment, floodlights ignited across Pier Nine. Tactical teams rose from concealed positions. Mara's voice sounded through loudspeakers ordering Adrian to release Elias.
Adrian dragged Elias backward and pressed a gun to his neck.
"You brought police."
"I brought witnesses," Claire said. "The ledger is already in the hands of investigators and journalists. At 8:05, it becomes public. Killing us will not close the door."
Moreau emerged from behind a cargo container holding a remote detonator. "The fuel lines are wired."
Nolan's team had anticipated explosives but had not found every charge.
Adrian took the detonator. "Call off the release."
"No."
"Your father dies."
Elias met Claire's eyes. For once, he did not ask her to save him.
Claire said, "My father spent twenty-eight years choosing which truth the world could survive. I will not repeat his mistake."
Adrian's hand trembled.
"You would sacrifice him for a company?"
"Not for a company. For every person people like you decided was acceptable to sacrifice."
The public release timer reached one minute.
Moreau moved first. He lunged for the cipher. Vanessa struck his arm with the broken replica. A shot fired. Elias fell sideways. Tactical officers advanced as Adrian pressed the detonator.
Nothing happened.
Vanessa smiled through tears. "I switched that too."
The real detonator had been passed to Mara before the exchange.
Adrian ran toward the river tunnel. Claire followed despite shouted orders. She found him at the tunnel gate, struggling with a rusted lock.
"It's over," she said.
He turned the gun on her.
"It was never over. Not for me. I grew up believing I had been stolen from this family. Every room I entered, every rich man who dismissed me, every time your father praised my work but looked through me, I thought: that should have been mine."
"You were stolen," Claire said. "But not by me."
"You benefited."
"And you chose to become the person who stole from others."
He raised the gun.
A second figure appeared in the tunnel behind him.
Julian Cross.
"Put it down," Julian said.
Adrian laughed. "There he is. The real prince. Tell her how many people you buried protecting your secret."
Julian's face hardened.
Claire looked between them. "What does he mean?"
Adrian fired.
Julian fired back.
Adrian collapsed near the river gate, the gun sliding into the water. Claire rushed forward. The bullet had entered below his ribs. He was alive but fading.
He gripped her sleeve. "The first certificate," he gasped. "Julian has it. Ask him why your mother was afraid of him."
Then he lost consciousness.
At 8:05, the Black Ledger went public.
Across the world, names appeared, investigations began, and institutions denied everything.
At Pier Nine, Julian was gone before police reached the tunnel.
He left behind the original founder certificate.
It named Claire and Gabriel as heirs.

But beneath their names was a third line.
