Chapter 6 - Claire Refused to Become Her Father's Weapon

Nolan Price had protected the Laurent family for twenty-three years.
He had planned Claire's school routes, screened her friends, guarded Helena during her illness, and stood beside Elias at every major crisis. Discovering that he had photographed Claire in secret felt more intimate than betrayal. It felt like learning that the walls of her childhood home had eyes.
Elias insisted Nolan must have been coerced.
Claire did not allow him to finish.
"You defended Adrian for less," she said. "You defended Nolan before seeing the evidence. You keep believing loyalty is a shield against truth."
Elias flinched.
They were in Helena's old library, where the restoration committee had established a temporary command center. Boxes of archived correspondence covered the long table. Rain pressed against the windows.
"I built this company with people I trusted," Elias said.
"And men like Adrian learned to hide inside that trust."
"What would you have me do? Suspect everyone?"
"No. Build systems that do not require everyone to be good."
The words were harsh, but Claire knew they were also meant for herself. She had trusted love instead of evidence. She had mistaken endurance for strength.
Mara interrupted with the forensic audit's first major discovery. The missing forty-two million dollars had not left the corporate network. It had circulated through shell companies and returned as purchases of Laurent-Vail shares during price declines.
"Someone is building a hidden stake," Mara said. "Adrian moved the money, but the final owner is masked behind a trust registered in Bellhaven."
"Aster?" Claire asked.
"Possibly. The trust is called Orison Continuity."
Claire looked toward Elias. Saint Orison's. Another door.
They also discovered that Nolan had approved security access for Adrian after his suspension. His last phone signal came from the family's private airfield, but no aircraft had officially departed.
Claire ordered every hangar searched.
Elias objected when she requested that his personal files be included in the audit.
"My records contain state-level negotiations and private client matters," he said.
"Then independent counsel can separate privileged material."
"Claire, there are limits."
"Not for the founder's reserve. Not when my forged signature was used."
Their argument ended when a courier delivered a package addressed to Claire in Adrian's handwriting.
Inside was the silver shoe she had lost when he pushed her from the stage. The heel was stained with blood. Beneath it lay a flash drive and a note.
YOU ALWAYS NEEDED YOUR FATHER TO PICK YOU UP.
THIS TIME, ASK WHY HE LET YOU FALL.
The flash drive contained a video recorded twenty-eight years earlier. Helena appeared in a hospital bed holding two infants. Elias stood beside her, younger and visibly terrified. Victor Vail entered the frame and ordered the nurse to take one child.
Elias blocked him.
Then the video skipped.
When it resumed, Elias was signing a document.
The nurse carried a baby out of the room.
Claire stopped the video. "You signed."
Elias's face collapsed. "Victor told me Gabriel would die without treatment available only through Aster. He said the transfer was temporary. Helena was hemorrhaging. I had minutes to choose."
"You let them take him."
"I believed I was saving him."
"And afterward?"
"Victor said the child died during transport. He showed me ashes."
Claire stood so quickly the chair struck the floor. "You knew more than you told me in Geneva."
"I knew I had signed the transfer. I did not know Helena later found evidence he survived."
The flash drive contained one more file: a scanned agreement establishing Orison Continuity. The first signature belonged to Victor Vail.
The second belonged to Elias Laurent.
Elias stared at it. "That is not my signature."
Claire's laugh held no humor. "That is what I said about the marital disclosure."
For the first time in her life, she ordered her father's access to the restoration committee suspended.
The decision reached the press within an hour. Commentators called it a ruthless break between father and daughter. Investors, however, responded to the demonstration of independence. The stock stabilized.
That evening, Claire returned alone to the ballroom.
The stage had been cleared, but a faint scratch marked the step where her ring had struck the wood. She stood there until Vanessa entered under guard.
"Why are you here?" Claire asked.
"To show you something Adrian kept in his office wall."
Vanessa pressed a hidden panel behind the stage curtain. A compartment opened.
Inside were dozens of recordings.
One was labeled CLAIRE - BREAKING POINT.
Another was labeled ELIAS - FINAL CONFESSION.
