Chapter 5 - The Woman in Room Four Remembered Two Babies

Her name was Evelyn Vale.

Adrian's mother had been declared dead twelve years earlier, but the elderly woman found beneath Saint Orison's was unmistakably alive. She was thin, sedated, and surrounded by medical equipment connected to a generator. Someone had kept her hidden and barely conscious for years.

When Claire entered the hospital room where Evelyn was recovering, the woman stared at her with a terror that slowly changed into recognition.

"Helena," she whispered.

"I'm Claire. Helena was my mother."

Evelyn began to cry.

Elias stood behind Claire, one hand gripping the doorframe. For a long moment, none of them spoke.

Doctors warned that Evelyn's memory might be fragmented. Mara recorded the interview while federal agents guarded the corridor.

Evelyn said she had been a nurse at Aster House. It was not an adoption agency, at least not in the ordinary sense. Wealthy families paid Aster to erase inconvenient children, exchange infants, manufacture heirs, and bury scandals. Victor Vail had brought Helena's twins to the facility the night they were born.

"He wanted the boy removed," Evelyn said. "But there was another order."

"From whom?" Elias asked.

Evelyn shook her head. "A man behind glass. We never saw his face. He said the girl must remain because the trust required a Laurent daughter. The boy was to be placed where he could be watched."

Claire's hands tightened in her lap. "Where did Gabriel go?"

"I tried to save him. I took a baby and ran."

"Adrian?"

Evelyn looked at Claire. "The child I raised was called Adrian. But I never knew which baby they gave me."

The room fell silent.

Evelyn explained that Aster used coded bracelets, not names. On the night she fled, alarms sounded and records were switched. She believed she had Gabriel, but months later she found a second bracelet hidden in the blanket. It bore a different code.

"Adrian grew up knowing he might be a Laurent," she said. "I told him when he was seventeen. It changed him. He believed everything your family owned had been stolen from him."

"Why did you fake your death?" Claire asked.

"I didn't. Adrian brought me to Saint Orison's. He said he needed time to prove who he was. When I told him revenge would not make him a son, he locked me below."

Elias turned away.

Claire asked the question she feared most. "Is Adrian my brother?"

Evelyn closed her eyes. "I don't know."

DNA samples were taken immediately. The results would require forty-eight hours because investigators insisted on using three independent laboratories.

Meanwhile, the board demanded leadership.

Laurent-Vail's stock plunged. Major clients paused contracts. Employees feared layoffs. News commentators debated whether Claire was a hidden owner who had allowed corruption to flourish. Adrian's supporters claimed the chairman had staged a family coup.

Claire had spent years avoiding the company. Now everyone expected her to save it.

At an emergency board meeting, Samuel Ko proposed appointing an external interim CEO. Elias opposed him.

"Claire controls the trust," Elias said. "She should lead."

Claire surprised them both. "Not yet."

The room stirred.

"My husband is a fugitive. My signature was forged. My family history may be connected to a criminal network. If I take the title today, every decision will look like revenge. Appoint Mara as interim chief executive for thirty days. I will chair an independent restoration committee and publish every finding that can legally be released."

Mara stared at her. "You are asking me to investigate the people who appointed me."

"Exactly."

The vote passed.

Claire's first public address was not delivered from the ballroom stage. She stood in the crowded cafeteria, without a podium, facing employees who had watched her fall.

"Some of you laughed," she said. "Some of you looked away. Some of you were afraid to intervene because the person hurting me was powerful. This company taught you that survival required silence. That ends now."

She announced a protected reporting channel, an outside forensic audit, and guaranteed wages during the investigation.

A young analyst raised her hand. "Are you going to fire everyone who supported Adrian?"

Claire answered, "I will not punish honest disagreement. I will punish fraud, retaliation, and abuse."

The room remained uncertain, but no longer hostile.

Afterward, a janitor named Luis approached her. He had worked at headquarters for nineteen years.

"Mrs. Vale," he said, "I saw Mr. Vale leave the ballroom."

Security had interviewed him twice, but he had withheld one detail because he feared losing his job.

"He wasn't alone," Luis said. "Chairman Laurent's security director drove him out through the catering dock."

Claire called Mara.

Nolan Price's office was searched within the hour.

It was empty.

Inside his locked desk, investigators found photographs of Claire taken over twenty-five years, beginning when she was a child.
