Chapter 7 - the hidden winter room)

The first major break came from Owen.
Not the police.
Not Marcus.
Not Julian.
A three-year-old boy holding a blue crayon.
The pediatric therapist asked him to draw his father's house.
He drew a square.
Then windows.
Then a yellow room.
Then a black room.
Ava watched from the other side of the observation glass.
The therapist pointed gently.
"What's this room?"
Owen colored harder.
"Cold room."
Ava's pulse quickened.
The therapist remained calm.
"Is it outside?"
Owen shook his head.
"Inside."
"Where?"
"Down."
A basement.
The Mercer villa had a wine cellar, gym and private theater on the lower level.
No cold room.
At least none Ava knew about.
The therapist asked, "Who goes there?"
Owen stopped coloring.
"Me."
Ava gripped the edge of the counter.
"With Cece?"
He nodded.
"Anyone else?"
Owen drew a tall figure.
Black clothes.
Ava looked at Marcus.
He was standing beside her.
His expression hardened.
The therapist continued.
"Who is that?"
Owen whispered, "Ring man."
Sebastian.
Within two hours Detective Walsh obtained a warrant.
Julian gave unrestricted access to the villa.
Ava stayed with Owen.
Marcus went with police.
At 4:10 p.m., he called.
"Come here."
Ava looked at Julian.
"What did they find?"
Marcus's voice was low.
"You need to see it."
They arrived at the villa before sunset.
The shattered sliding door had been boarded over.
The party decorations were gone.
Without guests, music and candlelight, the enormous house felt hollow.
Walsh led them downstairs.
Past the wine cellar.
Past the gym.
Into a maintenance corridor Ava had never noticed.
At the end was a metal door.
It opened into a narrow room insulated with silver panels.
Ava stopped.
The temperature was colder than the rest of the basement.
A small chair stood in the center.
Child-sized.
A camera tripod faced it.
On one wall hung a whiteboard.
Three columns.
Trigger.
Response.
Statement.
Ava felt sick.
Julian stood beside her.
"What the hell is this?"
Walsh pointed toward evidence markers.
A pair of Owen's socks.
A plastic cup.
A small red mitten.
And a portable air-conditioning unit modified to produce extremely cold air.
Ava could barely breathe.
"They put him in here."
Marcus nodded.
"Probably before escalating to the outdoor exposure."
Julian punched the wall.
Walsh immediately turned.
"Do that again and you leave."
Julian stepped back.
His knuckles were bleeding.
Ava barely noticed.
She walked toward the whiteboard.
Most of it had been erased.
Under ultraviolet light, technicians had recovered fragments.
MOTHER LEAVES.
MOTHER ANGRY.
MOTHER HURTS.
DADDY DOESN'T LISTEN.
Ava closed her eyes.
Every fear Owen had developed.
Every strange sentence.
Every time he woke crying.
They had manufactured it here.
Walsh approached.
"We found DNA."
"Celeste?"
"Yes."
"Sebastian?"
"Waiting on confirmation."
"Anyone else?"
Walsh looked at Marcus.
"Possibly."
Ava turned.
"What does that mean?"
Marcus pointed toward a fingerprint marker near the door controls.
"One print does not belong to Celeste, Julian or Sebastian."
"Then whose?"
"We don't know."
Ava stared at the chair again.
A fourth person.
There had always been someone else.
A technician called from the corner.
"Detective."
Walsh walked over.
He held a small memory card inside an evidence sleeve.
"Found behind the insulation panel."
"Usable?"
"We'll know."
Marcus looked toward the camera tripod.
"If that's video..."
Ava did not finish the thought.
They waited nearly an hour.
Finally a technician brought a laptop.
The memory card contained seven video files.
The first six were corrupted.
The seventh played.
The date showed January 17.
Owen sat in the little chair.
He was crying.
Celeste stood behind the camera.
Sebastian entered from the right.
His face was clear.
Julian stared at his brother.
Older than the family photograph.
Thinner.
But unmistakable.
Sebastian crouched in front of Owen.
"Tell me what Mommy did."
Owen shook his head.
"Mommy nice."
Sebastian smiled.
"Then we wait."
He stood.
Celeste lowered the room temperature.
Owen began shivering.
Ava turned away.
She could not watch.
Julian did.
He forced himself to.
Then a third adult entered.
A man wearing a dark medical-style coat.
His face remained outside the camera frame.
Only his hands were visible.
He checked Owen's pulse.
Then said, "Enough."
Sebastian replied, "Not yet."
The man became angry.
"I said enough. His temperature is dropping too fast."
Ava looked back.
Sebastian stepped toward him.
"We need the statement."
"You need a frightened child. You don't need a dead one."
Julian's face changed.
The unknown man knelt beside Owen.
He wrapped a blanket around him.
Then his sleeve shifted.
A tattoo appeared on his wrist.
A small compass surrounded by four numbers.
Marcus froze the video.
"I know that tattoo."
Ava turned.
"Who is he?"
Marcus looked at Julian.
Julian already seemed to know.
"No."
Ava stared between them.
"Who?"
Julian spoke quietly.
"Doctor Nathan Vale."
"Vale?"
"Celeste's uncle."
Ava felt another piece fall into place.
Marcus nodded.
"He worked at Northstar Genomics."
The room became silent.
The fertility testing.
Richard Mercer.
Celeste.
Sebastian.
Owen.
Nothing was separate anymore.
Ava looked at the frozen video.
"Find Nathan Vale."
Walsh checked her phone.
Then frowned.
"We can't."
May you like
"Why?"
"Because Nathan Vale died five years ago."
